    一、阅读理解
As the summer travel seasn rlls in, prices at the gas pump are usually ging in the wrng directin fr ur wallets. That’s when drivers becme mre cncerned abut hw t squeeze the mst miles frm their fuel dllars and keep their cars running their best. T help yu stay in the knw, here are sme cmmn questins that ur aut-experts ften get asked abut gas mileage and related tpics:
What if I need t carry stuff n my car’s rf?
Carrying things n the rf hurts fuel ecnmy. When tested a 2013 Hnda Accrd at a steady 65 mph①, it gt 42 mpg② with nthing n the rf. Adding even an empty bike rack(架子)drpped the mileage by 5 mpg. And with tw bikes n the rf, gas mileage drpped t 27mpg.
Des running the A/C① hurt fuel ecnmy cmpared with pening the windws?
It depends n-hw hard the air-cnditining system has t wrk. When we measured the fuel-ecnmy difference, we fund that fuel use with the A/C running went up with higher utside temperatures. At 55℃ F, there were unnticeable differences. But when we measured again n days when the temperature was in the lw 70s and high 80s, we gt fewer miles per galln with the A/C n.
Hw far can I g when my lw-fuel warning light cmes n?
There is n set rule, but mst cars have a reserve f between 1 and 2 gallns f gas when the light ges n, r enugh t travel abut 40 miles r s at a mderate speed. T maximize thse last cuple f gallns, we suggest slwing dwn and maintaining a steady pace.
Can I imprve gas mileage by installing a special air filter(过滤器)?
With mdern cars, changing yur air filter prbably wn’t imprve yur fuel ecnmy. When we tested a car t see whether a dirty air filter hurt its gas mileage because f reduced air intake, we fund that the car’s fuel ecnmy wasn’t hurt. The engine’s cmputer autmatically made up fr the restricted airflw by reducing fuel use t maintain the right air/fuel prprtin. We expect similar results frm any air-filter change.
    ①mph: mile per hur
    ②mpg: mile per galln
    ③A/C: air-cnditining
    1.The passage is intended t give answers t questins related t _____.

B.the engine’s cmputer be updated as ften as pssible
C.drivers carry an empty bike rack n the rf just in case
D.cars mve at a fixed lw speed with a warning f lw fuel
3.At which temperature is there a mst nticeable difference in fuel ecnmy between running A/C and pening the windw?
    A.40° FB.51° F
    C.55° FD.73° F

Like mst peple, Michael Scullin, assciate prfessr f psychlgy and neurscience at Baylr University, likes t listen t sme light music befre ging t bed. Hwever, ne day when he realised he was waking up in the middle f the night with a sng stuck in his head, he saw an pprtunity t study hw music and particularly sngs stuck in the head might affect sleep patterns.
Scullin’s recent study investigated the relatinship between music listening and sleep, fcusing n a rarely-explred mechanism (机制): invluntary musical imagery (无意识音像), r “earwrms”, when a sng r tune replays ver and ver in a persn’s mind.
The study invlved a survey and a lab experiment. The survey invlved 209 participants wh cmpleted a series f surveys n sleep quality, music listening habits and earwrm frequency, including hw ften they experienced an earwrm while trying t fall asleep, waking up in the middle f the night and immediately upn waking in the mrning.
In the experimental study, 50 participants were brught int Scullin’s Sleep Neurscience and Cgnitin Labratry at Baylr, where three ppular and catchy sngs were played befre bedtime — Taylr Swift’s Shake It Off, Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe and Jurney’s Dn’t Stp Believin’.
“We randmly asked participants t listen t the riginal versins r the instrumental versins f the sngs. Participants respnded whether and when they experienced an earwrm. Then we analyzed whether that impacted their nighttime sleep physilgy,” says Scullin.
In bth the survey and experimental study, earwrms were reprted thrughut the night by participants, with thse catching an earwrm taking lnger t fall asleep, spending mre time in the light stages f sleep, and waking up mre times during the night. Besides, the instrumental versins f the sngs caused abut twice as many earwrms as (and mre sleep prblems than) the riginal versins.
“We thught that peple wuld have earwrms at bedtime when they were trying t fall asleep, but we certainly didn’t knw that peple wuld reprt regularly waking up frm sleep with an earwrm,” says Scullin.
Past studies have linked late-night music listening with better sleep in thse with insmnia (失眠), perhaps because it can relax the bdy. The researchers behind the new study suggest that actually it might be wrse fr ur sleep — that even after the tunes stp, ur brains cntinue t prcess them fr several hurs.
Scullin suggests aviding listening t music right befre bed t limit the chance f a catchy tune taking hld in ur minds. Engaging in sme ther cgnitive activity befre sleeping, like making a list f jbs fr the next day, might als help clear the mind.

B.Earwrms can frequently happen befre ne’s sleep.
C.Earwrms can make it difficult fr peple t fall asleep.
D.The effect f earwrms varies with the versins f the music.

Reptiles, like snakes, lizards, and crcdiles are egg-laying animals. The species are cld-blded, which means their bdies have the same temperature as the area arund them. A recent reprt says that mre than ne-fifth f the wrld’s reptiles are at risk f ging extinct.

The reprt has revealed sme unhappy news — 21% f all reptile species are in danger f extinctin. That’s ver 1,800 species in all. The study reprted that at least 31 species f reptiles have already gne extinct. The main reasn these reptiles are faced with extinctin is that humans are taking ver mre and mre f their natural habitats. Mre land cntinues t be cleared t make rm fr cities and twns. Large areas f land are als being cleared s that they can be used as farmland. Lgging is anther big threat t reptile habitats.
But even if reptiles aren’t cnsidered lvely, they play a very imprtant part in nature’s fd chains. One service perfrmed by reptiles humans shuld appreciate is that they are natural enemies t certain pests, like insects and rats, and therefre helping cntrl their numbers.
Scientists say the gd news is that we knw what must be dne t prtect reptiles. Bruce Yung, ne f the leaders f the research, says, “We have all the tls we need. Prtecting natural areas, especially rainfrests, is at the tp f the list. Studies shw that saving natural areas desn’t just prtect mammals r birds, but all kinds f animals, including reptiles.”
12.What can we knw abut reptiles frm the reprt?
A.There are ver 10,000 different kinds f reptiles wrldwide.
    B.Reptiles are cld-blded egg-laying animals.
C.Over 20% f reptile species are at risk f dying ut.
