Many bilgists are drawn t cean animals like sea turtles and whales. Fr me, the pale, blind creatures in the wrld’s darkest caves are mre attractive. As an underwater cave eclgist, I find and name new species. I have described eight new species f spnges(海绵物种)s far, seven f which live nly in caves. Smetimes I cunt the ppulatin f rganisms t see hw their numbers change ver time. I als study hw different species interact with ne anther and their envirnment.
When I start diving with my team members, there’s natural light arund us, but as we div e farther, it turns dark, and we switch n ur lights and fllw the cave line—a thin thread explrers leave behind fr divers t find their way in and ut f the cave. While sme caves are just a few meters lng, sme stretch ver 300 kilmeters and culd be deeper than 50 meters. Diving at this depth, yu might fall in narcsis,a state where the brain feels like it’s n a high, similar t being drunk. We might run int truble an hur r s away frm the cave entrance.
But the mysterius(神秘的)wrld we see inside is wrth the risk. I remember diving int El Aerlit Cave n Czumel Island in Mexic, where I recrded 101 species. My mst exciting encunter t date has been with remipedes—pisnus wrmlike creatures fund nly in underwater caves. It tk me arund 200 dives befre I came face t face with abut 15 f them hidden deep in the caves f Czumel.
These delicate ecsystems are rapidly changing due t water pllutin, climate change, and cnstructin activities. We might lse the many life frms in these deep, dark wrlds befre we can even begin t understand them. I’m determined t explre all I can while they still exist. Few scial netwrking platfrms are knwn fr inspiring psitive scial change these days, but an Inuit-develped app is helping cmmunities frm Alaska t Greenland advance their self-determinatin. Named SIKU after the Inuktitut wrd fr “sea ice,” the app allws cmmunities in the Nrth t pull tgether traditinal knwledge and scientific data t track changes in the envirnment, keep tabs n lcal wildlife, and make decisins abut hw t manage it —all while cntrlling hw the infrmatin is shared.
A grup f Inuit elders and hunters frm Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, came up with the idea fr SIKU mre than a decade ag t dcument and understand the changing sea ice they were witnessing in sutheastern Hudsn Bay. Over the years, SIKU has imprved, and recently, the elders saw that the platfrm culd help address a familiar challenge: sharing knwledge with yunger peple wh ften have their nses in their phnes. In 2019, SIKU was relaunched as a cmpletely develped scial netwrk—a platfrm where members can pst phts and ntes abut wildlife sightings, hunts, sea ice cnditins, and mre. Since early 2024, ver 25,000 peple frm at least 120 cmmunities have made mre than 75,000 psts n SIKU.
Traditinally, Inuit cmmunities shared infrmatin rally(口头上地). Yet industry representatives and gvernment scientists have a lng histry f dismissing Imuktitut knwledge and making decisins based n envirnmental data cllected during irregular, shrt-term studies. Nw armed with SIKU, nrtherners are dcumenting infrmatin “in a way that ther peple will understand,” said Lucassie Arragutainaq, a cfunder f the Arctic Eider Sciety.
Cmmunities are already using SIKU t infrm imprtant decisins. In 2021, fr instance, elders in Sanikiluaq were wrried that the lcal reindeer(驯鹿)ppulatin had thinned, s SIKU was used t survey hunters and lk at recent reprted harvest rates. The analysis led them t temprarily clse the hunt t relieve pressure n the ppulatin and t reintrduce hunting slwly nce the number f reindeer increased.
This decisin shws hw the Inuit can use the technlgy in cmbinatin with traditinal wildlife management.

30. What des Arragutainaq think f SIKU?

B. It transfrms the lifestyle f Inuit cmmunity.
C. It makes Inuktitut wisdm better understd.
D. It cllects data t identify gvernment’s attitudes.
31. Hw des the authr develp the last paragraph?
A. By quting an expert.B. By citing an example.
C. By making a cmparisn.D. By extending a definitin.

A friend jumps ut at yu when yu’re turning a crner. Yur heart starts punding, and yu gasp. “Yu scared me t death!” yu say. Of curse, yu are nt dead. But saying this is s cmmn, in fact, that we have t ask the questin: Is it pssible t be scared t death?
In fact, any strng emtinal reactin can cause deadly amunts f a chemical, such as adrenaline( 肾上腺素), in the bdy. It happens very rarely, but it can happen t anyne. The risk f death frm fear r anther strng emtin is greater fr individuals with preexisting heart cnditins, but peple wh are perfectly health y in all ther respects can als fall victim.
Being scared t death bils dwn t ur autnmic respnse t a strng emtin, such as fear. Fr fear-induced deaths, the death starts with ur fight-r-flight respnse, which is the bdy’s physical respnse t a ptential threat. This respnse is characterized by an increased heart rate, anxiety, and increased bld glucse levels.
T understand that, we have t understand what the nervus system is ding when it’s stimulated, primarily in releasing hrmnes(荷尔蒙). These hrmnes, which can be adrenaline r anther chemical messenger, ready the bdy fr actin. The thing is, adrenaline and similar chemicals in large quantity are txic(有毒的)t rgans such as the heart, the liver, and the lungs. Scientists claim that what causes sudden death ut f fear in particular is the chemical’s damage t the heart, since this is the nly rgan that, upn being affected, culd cause sudden death. Adrenaline pens calcium(钙)t the heart. With a lt f calcium ging t the heart, the rgan has truble slwing dwn, which is smething that can cause abnrmal heart rhythm. Irregular heartbeats prevent the rgan frm successfully pumping bld t the bdy and lead t sudden death unless treated immediately.
High levels f adrenaline aren’t caused nly by fear. Other strng emtins can als cause a rush f adrenaline. Fr example, sprting events have als been knwn t lead t adrenaline-induced deaths.
32. Why is the case in Paragraph 1 mentined?
A. T present cmmn cncern ver an issue.
B. T give an example f cnditinal respnse.
C. T relate the audience t the tpic f the text.
D. T emphasize the cnsequence f strng emtins.
33. What’s the direct cnsequence f strng emtinal reactin?
A. Heart cnditins.B. Lw bld pressure.
C. Overall health decline.D. Change f hrmne levels.
34. What’s the fcus f Paragraph 4?
A. Hw ur nervus system develps.
B. Hw calcium functins in ur heart.
C. Hw ur fight-r-flight respnse wrks.
D. Hw the rgans deal with txic chemicals.
35. What’s the best title f the text?
A. Can we really be scared t death?
B. Shuld we avid intense sprting events?
C. Are high levels f adrenaline caused by fear?
D. Will we jump at a friend’s sudden appearance?
