A grup f Inuit elders and hunters frm Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, came up with the idea fr SIKU mre than a decade ag t dcument and understand the changing sea ice they were witnessing in sutheastern Hudsn Bay. Over the years, SIKU has imprved, and recently, the elders saw that the platfrm culd help address a familiar challenge: sharing knwledge with yunger peple wh ften have their nses in their phnes. In 2019, SIKU was relaunched as a cmpletely develped scial netwrk—a platfrm where members can pst phts and ntes abut wildlife sightings, hunts, sea ice cnditins, and mre. Since early 2024, ver 25,000 peple frm at least 120 cmmunities have made mre than 75,000 psts n SIKU.
Traditinally, Inuit cmmunities shared infrmatin rally（口头上地）. Yet industry representatives and gvernment scientists have a lng histry f dismissing Imuktitut knwledge and making decisins based n envirnmental data cllected during irregular, shrt-term studies. Cmmunities are already using SIKU t infrm imprtant decisins. Fr fear-induced deaths, the death starts with ur fight-r-flight respnse, which is the bdy’s physical respnse t a ptential threat. This respnse is characterized by an increased heart rate, anxiety, and increased bld glucse levels.
T understand that, we have t understand what the nervus system is ding when it’s stimulated, primarily in releasing hrmnes（荷尔蒙）. These hrmnes, which can be adrenaline r anther chemical messenger, ready the bdy fr actin. The thing is, adrenaline and similar chemicals in large quantity are txic（有毒的）t rgans such as the heart, the liver, and the lungs. Scientists claim that what causes sudden death ut f fear in particular is the chemical’s damage t the heart, since this is the nly rgan that, upn being affected, culd cause sudden death.
