The Merriam-Webster dictinary puts it simply: “birdbrain: a stupid persn”. Well, sme birds are having the last laugh with that ne.
Fr animals, the ability t slve prblems with multiple tls is a rare talent, which was reprted nly in chimpanzees (大猩猩). But nw, a study cnducted by Osuna-Mascaró’s team adds Gffin’s cckats (small white parrts)t the “Dean’s List”, t.
Inspired by the chimpanzees which fish fr white ants via tls, the team tasked the cckats with fishing fr a kind f nu t in three experiments. Firstly, the researchers made a bx cntaining a nut which was cvered by a transparent membrane (薄膜). Once a cckat brke it thrugh with a sharp stick, the bird wuld need t use a straw (麦秆) t reach the nut. The birds were supplied with the tw tls.
Seven f the 10 cckats figured it ut, with tw cmpleting the task within 35secnds n their first attempt! Since the cckats dn’t have similar fraging (觅食的) requirements in the wild, there is n chance that they can adapt their tl-using strategies t the task naturally.
Next, the team mixed up the bxes and randmly presented each bird with a bx with the membrane r a bx withut. The birds were given the same tw tls. As a result, all the cckats mastered the test quickly and were able t recgnize when a single tl was sufficient and when tw tls were required.
Hwever, the birds shwed an interesting behavir beynd the researchers’ expectatins. “When they chse between which tl t use, they were picking ne up, releasing it, then picking up the ther ne, and s n,” says Osuna-Mascaró. “It is wrthwhile t figure this ut in future.”
Subsequently, the researchers evaluated the birds’ transprtatin ability while carrying tls in different situatins. Mst cckats carried the tw tls tgether when they were presented with a bx having the membrane. “I’ve seen birds cmbining bjects playfully, but they rarely transprt mre than ne bject tgether in their nrmal behavir,” says ne bilgist. “We feel that, in terms f technical cgnitin and tl use, birds have been underestimated. Maybe it’s time fr dictinary editrs t justify birds.”

I read a lt f nnfictin, mstly bks abut current issues. The tpics vary but mst f the bks share a cmmn feature. When I cme t the last chapter — the ne where slutins are suppsed t be ffered — I’m usually left disappinted. Mst authrs fall back n “I’ve laid ut the prblem, yu fix it.” When slutins are ffered, they usually call fr strng actin by the gvernment, which, these days, is useless.
S I was excited when I recently read Jnathan Haidt’s new bk, The Anxius Generatin: Hw the Great Rewiring f Childhd is Causing an Epidemic f Mental Illness.
Haidt, a scial psychlgist frm New Yrk University, shws hw the play-based childhd began t decline in the 1980s, and hw it was finally wiped ut by the arrival f the phne-based childhd in the early 2010s. As teens traded in their flip phnes (翻盖手机) fr smartphnes packed with scial media apps, time nline sared while time engaging face-t-face with friends and family dived.
He presents mre than a dzen mechanisms by which this great rewiring f childhd has interfered with children’s scial and neurlgical develpment, cvering everything frm addictin t lneliness, scial cmparisn, and perfectinism.
What stands ut in Haidt’s bk is his cmmitment — alng with many ther educatrs, parents and cmmunity grups — t addressing the shrtage f free play and the excess f scial media. This eye-pening bk is a pwerful call-t-arms, ffering practical advice fr parents, schls, gvernments, and teens themselves. Slutins range frm parents setting limits n their children’s use f smartphnes, t grups f parents cperating s their children wn’t feel rejected by kids living in a phne-centered wrld.
T all the lcal schls, parents and agencies already wrking t let kids be kids, I say thanks, and keep up the gd wrk. T everyne else interested in the subject, I urge yu t read Haidt’s bk and check ut the many resurces and grups he cites. If peple dn’t push fr change, then tech cmpanies driven by data cllectin and ad revenue (收入) will cntinue t rule kids’ lives, rather than parents and lcal cmmunities.
12. Why d mst bks abut current issues disappint the authr?
A. They explre the same tpic.
B. They justify gvernment actins.
C. They fail t ffer practical slutins.
D. They lack a full review f the situatin.
13. The underlined part in paragraph 4 means the shift in kids’ energy and attentin frm ______.
A. flip phnes t smart nes
B. the physical wrld t the virtual ne
C. academic studies t stylish entertainments
D. ver-prtected childhd t care-free adulthd
14. What is the highlight f The Anxius Generatin?
A. It ffers fresh insight int scial media.
B. Its cntent is well received by children.
C. It will influence cllective decisin-making.
D. Its authr suggests ways t fix the prblems.
15. What des the authr intend t d in the last paragraph?
A. Issue a warning.B. Recmmend a bk.
C. Express gratitude.D. Present an argument.

13. The underlined part in paragraph 4 means the shift in kids’ energy and attentin frm ______.
A. flip phnes t smart nes
B. the physical wrld t the virtual ne
C. academic studies t stylish entertainments
D. ver-prtected childhd t care-free adulthd
14. What is the highlight f The Anxius Generatin?
A. It ffers fresh insight int scial media.
B. Its cntent is well received by children.
C. It will influence cllective decisin-making.
D. Its authr suggests ways t fix the prblems.
15. What des the authr intend t d in the last paragraph?
