When applied t the surface f prsthetic r rbtic arms, the sensr skin prvides tuch sensitivity and flexibility, making it pssible fr difficult tasks t be cmpleted by machines, such as picking up a piece f sft fruit. The sensr is als sft t the tuch, like human skin. which helps make human interactins safer and mre lifelike.
“Our sensr uses weak electric fields t sense bjects, even at a distance, much as tuchscreens d. But unlike tuchscreens, this sensr is sft and can detect frces int and alng its surface,” explained Dr. Jhn Madden, senir study authr and a prfessr f electrical and cmputer engineering wh leads the Advanced Materials and Prcess Engineering Labratry at UBC.
