Here are fur student pdcasts(播客) that ffer a glimpse int the minds f students and what they say abut news cncerning climate in their cmmunities—and what they hpe t d abut it.
Behind the Scenes f the Msquit Fire
In a 10-episde series, a sixth-grade class at the Gergetwn Schl f Innvatin in Gergetwn, Calif., shares stries frm the damaging Msquit Fire in 2022. This grup f eight students asks tw firefighters frm the Gergetwn Fire Department what it’s like t fight fires and prtect lved nes in their hmetwn.
    Fires: Set Ablaze
At Chautauqua Elementary, the Vashn fifth-graders talk abut the far-reaching and lasting impact f wildfires and wildfire smke—and the direct effects n their lives, like waiting fr the schl bus n a smky day. The students als interview experts and share their research n wildfire precautins(预防措施).
    Flwing Thrugh Time
In this pdcast frm Peak Academy, a grup f eight middle schlers reprts n dealing with water shrtages in Bzeman, Mntana. They trace the histry f their grwing hmetwn’s water supply, which has been dependent n muntain snwmelt. As that surce becmes less reliable in a warming wrld, the students turn t the grwn-ups t ask what they can d t cnserve water.
    Washed Away
The deadly flding in eastern Kentucky last year frever changed the lives f high schlers Ryley Bwman, Carlina Jhnsn and Hunter Nble. The three classmates at Mrgan Cunty High Schl in West Liberty, Ky., share firsthand accunts f their wn and their family’s experiences during the flds.
1.Wh shws interest in firefighters’ stries?
    A. Peak Academy students. B. Chautauqua Elementary students.
    C. Mrgan Cunty High Schl students.D. Gergetwn Schl f Innvatin students.

Nw my dad is ne f thse peple wh never seem t have much truble figuring ut hw t make mney. Sure, Mm and Dad had sme truble keeping it fr a little while during the bankruptcy (破产)years, but bringing hme a gd incme was never really a prblem. That’s because my parents have never been cnfused abut where mney cmes frm.
It’s smething my dad has tld me pretty much every day: Mney cmes frm wrk. Our culture has made many wnderful advances t ensure the safety and well-being f children. But we may have taken this t far. Many parents tday are s centered n what their children want that they have lst perspective n what their children really need. Perspective—lking at life ver time—demands that yu teach children t wrk. Teaching a child t wrk is nt child abuse. We teach them t wrk nt fr ur benefit, but because it gives them bth dignity in a jb well dne tday and the tls and character t win in the future as adults.
Yu shuld view teaching yur children t wrk in the same way yu view teaching them t bathe and brush their teeth—as a necessary skill fr life. If yur child graduates frm high schl and his nly skill set cnsists f playing vide games, cmplaining and eating junk fd, then yu have set him up t fail.
Anther huge benefit f teaching a child the wnder f wrk is that she will tend t stay away frm peple wh refuse t wrk. Why is this gd? Because yu want yur daughter t marry Mr. Right, nt Mr. Lazy.
S train up a child in the way he shuld g, and when he is ld, he will nt g away frm it.

July was the httest mnth n recrd glbally. High temperatures and serius wildfires have swept acrss the Nrthern Hemisphere. Oceanic heat waves are damaging the wrld’s third-largest cral reef ff Flrida. And as the levels f greenhuse gases cntinue t increase, it means many even htter summers lie ahead.
Last week, the United Natins Secretary-General Antni Guterres cined a new term. The time f “glbal warming” has ended, he annunced, and the time f “glbal biling” has arrived.
But critics have strngly disagreed with the phrase. At ne level, “glbal biling” is clearly an verstatement, but “glbal warming” is nw far t weak a descriptin. Many climate scientists have pushed fr the term “glbal heating” t be used in preference. Similarly, phrases such as “climate crisis” haven’t received enugh attentin. That’s because many f us still feel we haven’t seen this crisis with ur wn eyes.
But that is changing. In the past few years, extreme weather and relevant events have struck many cuntries. Australia’s Black Summer brught wildfires that burned an area the size f the United Kingdm. Germany suffered serius flding in 2021. The 2022 fld in Pakistan flded large parts f the cuntry. China has seen bth drughts and flds. Terrible drughts have hit the Hrn f Africa fr many years. India has stpped rice exprts due t damage frm heavy rain.
Critics f climate actin ften cmplain abut what they see as the veruse f “crisis talk”. If everything is a crisis, nthing is a crisis.
When Guterres uses deeply impactful phrases, he’s nt inviting us t imagine a Hllywd-style disaster. What he’s hping is t make peple listen and act—nw we can see what climate change lks like.
Are there better phrases t describe this? Pssibly. Take the challenge yurself: can yu think up a brief, crrect phrase t cver wrsening lcal-and-reginal-scale drughts, fires, typhns and flds; damage t crps and fd safety; water shrtages; existential threats t cral reefs and lw-lying cmmunities? Yu can see hw hard it is.

    B. T entertain readers with Hllywd-style stries.
C T prvide a mre accurate descriptin f glbal warming.
    D. T make peple aware f the severity f the climate crisis.

The researchers carried ut their studies at six sites acrss suthwest Virginia, USA, acrss fur breeding(繁殖)seasns. They fund that the high survival rate f their chicks was subject t many factrs. Nt nly did male sparrws visit their nests mre ften, but they als began feeding chicks earlier in the day. Despite the challenges f being a city bird, hatching success was bserved t be higher in urban habitats. And even thugh brd parasitism, ne species laying eggs in the nest f anther, is typically higher in urban areas, the researchers bserved that rates f nest predatin, the act f ther animals eating eggs r yung birds, were lwer, further cntributing t the verall nesting success f these sparrws.
Lane said, “Our study adds t grwing evidence that certain species f sngbirds even benefit frm living in urban envirnments when there is enugh green space fr them t find fd and nest lcatins.”
The team hpe nging research in this area will cntribute t the establishment f urban envirnments aimed at ffering imprved supprt fr wildlife.
12.What causes the increased aggressin f male city sparrws?
    A. The stress f prtecting their territries.
    B. The wrsening f urban nise pllutin.
    C. The challenges f building their nests.
    D. The grwing needs f yunger generatins.
13.What had the researchers expected f urban males cmpared t thse in the cuntryside?

    C. They had lwer nest attendance. D. They wke up earlier in the mrning.
14.Which f the fllwing can be fund in urban areas accrding t the study?
