Fr many years, Bruce Bexler dreamed f ging where n human had gne befre. He wanted t cut a path thrugh unexplred lands and discver
rare, extic species.
That might sund like an impssible dream, but Bexler turned it int a reality.
In December 2015, he and a team f Australian and American scientists ventured int an islated trpical rain frest n the island f New Guinea.
They were the first peple ever t enter the mist-cvered regin. “As time was limited, we were drpped in by helicpter. Once we were n the grund,
there were n trails anywhere; it was really hard t get arund, ” Bexler says.
Within minutes f landing, the team sptted a black chicken-like bird with strange range skin hanging frm its neck. The scientists sn determined
that the unusual creature was a type f hneyeaters — the first new bird species t be sighted n New Guinea in 60 years.
The hneyeater wasn’t the nly surprise fr the scientists. They discvered mre than 40 previusly unknwn plant and animal species — 13 birds
f paradise, 20 frgs, fur butterflies, and five palms. “We were like kids in a candy stre,” Bexler recalls. “Everywhere we lked, we saw amazing
things we had never seen befre.”
The newfund species didn’t shy away frm the scientists. Tw lng-nsed echidnas — primitive egg-laying mammals — let the visitrs pick them
up and take them back t camp t study them. An echidna lks like a hedgehg and is als called a spiny anteater.
Bexler thinks the animals weren’t scared because they had never seen humans befre. “In almst all parts f New Guinea, animals are hunted fr
fd, and because f this, they are very cautius f peple,” he explains. “This area gives scientists a place where they can g t study the behaviurs
f animals that have nt yet learned t be afraid f peple. ”
Scientists believe the area is prbably the largest untuched frest in Asia. Lcal peple called Kwerba hunt and cllect plants frm the uter-edges
f the frest but tld Bexler that nt even their ancestrs had gne s far int the wds. The wded area is apprximately a 10-day walk frm the
nearest village.
Bexler and his team did nt have enugh time during the expeditin t study the area cmpletely. They hpe t return and expect t recrd many
mre undiscvered species. “We just scratched the surface,” Bexler says. “Anyne wh ges there will cme back with a mystery.”

If yu think search engines pwered by artificial intelligence prvide yu with useful-sunding answers, it is mre likely that yu are wrng,

Micrsft is just ne f many cmpanies ffering AI-pwered search tls, which generate results in digestible paragraphs that cite ther websites
rather than simply returning a list f links. T investigate these tls, Nelsn and his clleagues fed 1,450 ppular searches int Bing Chat and ther such
tls, including NeevaAI and PerplexityAI. These questins included examples such as “What are the latest technlgical discveries?” The team then
asked peple t rate whether the cntent used as citatins (引文) in the results actually supprted the statements made by the AIs.
Accrding t this assessment, nly 75% f citatins supprted the sentences they were attached t, and nly 52% f statements were supprted by
citatins at all. “That means the rest either have n citatins, r they are just wrng.” says Nelsn.
The researchers als asked peple t rate fluency f respnse and hw useful they seemed, and discvered a negative crrespndence. Fr every 0.1
increase in fluency ratings, the precisin decreased by 10.6%.
Aravind Srinlvas, a c-funder f PerplexityAI, says he welcmes the study. “The results are similar t the wrk the cmpany has cnducted, and
imprvements are pssible. Never judge an upcming technlgy by what it is tday, but rather by the ptential fr what it can be in the future,” he

systems,” he says.
