Xiami, best knwn fr its ppular smartphnes and dmestic appliances, launched its SU7 mdel n March 28 in China. The tech cmpany began
accepting rders in China via an app. Xiami said that it received 50,000 rders fr the SU7 in the first 27 minutes after sales pened.
“Entering the car-making business will be the last big start-up prject f my life. This is t perfrm ur agreement made three years ag,” Chief
Executive Lei Jun wrte. He added that he was cnfident abut entering the EV (electric vehicle) market.
Xiami intrduced the SU7 at its technlgy cnference in December 2023, saying it was capable f accelerating speeds faster than Tesla cars and
Prsche EVs, with ne versin capable f hitting 100 kilmeters per hur in 2.78 secnds. One versin has a driving range f up t 800 kilmeters, it
added.
The SU7’s release cmes when EV makers battle fr sales in the wrld’s largest aut market. Xiami will enter the cmpetitin as leading brands
like BYD and Tesla are cutting prices sharply t attract cnsumers t buy their EVs in an versupplied market.
Analysts said the SU7’s release will likely cut int Xiami’s bttm line as marketing and ther expenses rise. Xiami psted a net prfit f 4.87
billin yuan ($677.9 millin) in the third quarter, up 52% frm the preceding quarter n the back f imprved margins. The key thing t watch fr the
launch will be the price, specifically if it’s belw r abve ¥ 200,000, Huatai Securities equity analyst Leping Huang said. The level serves as a
