Engineers have been wrking hard t make rbts flexible and sensitive. When researchers frm a university began designing an artificial fingertip in 2009, they used human skin as a guide. Their first fingertip was abut the size f a cke can. By 2018, 3D printing made it abut the size f an adult's big te, with the multi-layered structure like human skin.
The latest breakthrugh is called TacTip. Scientists include artificial nerve netwrks int the fingertip, which enables a rbt t quickly prcess what it's sensing and act accrdingly like a real finger.
“A lt f ur sense f tuch is decided by ur skin,” says prfessr Benjamin, leader f the research team. In ur fingertips, nerve endings will defrm when the skin tuches an bject and then sends the signals t the brain abut what's happening. Similarly, the nerve netwrks f TacTip pick up and translate thse signals int the fingertip's actins, telling rbts t handle bjects f all shapes and sizes withut prgramming, accrding t Benjamin.
Sme scientists dubt whether TacTip is nly just skin-like. The signals frm the artificial and human fingertips are nt quite the same, as the signals in real skin are mre intense. The new study, unlike the past nes that examined sitting and frmal exercise separately, ignring light activities, invlved 3702 peple t find ut hw thse all affected peple’s health indices(指数).
With the data cllected, researchers characterized peple by hw they mved. The first grup dutifully exercised fr a half-hur and then sat, almst nnstp, fr mre than 10hurs a day. Anther grup similarly wrked ut fr 30 minutes and sat fr lng hurs. But, in between, they rse ften and tk walks arund, spending time in light activities like fetching anther cup f cffee. The third grup sat, uninterrupted, fr up t 10 hurs, but als cllected an hur f exercise mst days. The final grup, which the researchers named “the mvers,” exercised abut an hur mst days, while als mving lightly fr abut tw hurs mre.
When the researchers crss-checked these grups against peple’s current health data, the first grup had the wrst indices. On the cntrary, the ther grups were all better ff and t abut the same extent, with relatively imprved bld sugar cntrl and chlesterl(胆固醇) levels and abut 8 percent less bdy fat than the first grup.
“A single 30-minute, daily wrkut ‘might nt be enugh’ t reduce the dwnsides f lng time sitting,” said Vahid Farrahi, the lead authr f the new study.“In additin t a brisk(轻快的) wrkut, we need t mve lightly and ften, cleaning, taking the stairs, taking a walk in the halls r just nt remaining still.”
