I’m in a cffee shp in Manhattan and I’m abut t becme the mst disliked persn in the rm. First I’m ging t interrupt the man reading quietly near the windw and ask fr a drink f his latte. Next, I’m ging t ask the line f peple waiting t pay if I can cut t the frnt f the queue. This is hw I chse t spend my last vacatin. Here’s why.
Grwing up, all I ever heard abut was “EQ.” It was the mid-1990s, and psychlgist Daniel Gleman had just ppularized the cncept f emtinal intelligence. Unlike IQ, which tracked cnventinal measures f intelligence like reasning and recall, EQ measured the ability t understand ther peple — t listen, t empathize (共情), and t appreciate.
My mther, an elementary schl principal, prized brains and hard wrk, but she placed a special emphasis n Gleman’s new idea. T her, EQ was the elixir (万能药) that separated the gd students frm the great after they left schl. She was determined t send me int the adult wrld with as much f this elixir as pssible.
But when I finally began my first jb, I nticed a secnd elixir in the pckets f sme f my clleagues. It gave their pinins extra weight and their decisins added impact. Strangest f all, it seemed like the anti-EQ: Instead f knwing hw t make thers feel gd, this elixir gave peple the curage t d the ppsite — t say things thers didn’t want t hear.
This was assertiveness (魄力). It biled dwn t the cmmand f a single skill: the ability t have uncmfrtable cnversatins. Assertive peple — thse with high “AQ”— ask fr things they want, decline things they dn’t, prvide cnstructive feedback, and engage in direct cnfrntatin (对峙) and debate.
A lifetime imprving my EQ helped me empathize with thers, but it als left me verly sensitive t situatins where I had t say r d things that might make thers unhappy. It is easy t blame a business fr helping itself by hurting ther peple. But blaming alne is unlikely t prduce change. It ignres the fact that businesses are nt charities but prfit-making cmpanies, and they are under bligatin t maximize prfits fr sharehlders by legal means.
Our blaming f businesses als ignres the ultimate respnsibility f the public fr creating the cnditins that let a business prfit thrugh destructive envirnmental plicies. In the lng run, it is the public, either directly r thrugh its pliticians, that has the pwer t make such destructive plicies unprfitable and illegal, and t make sustainable envirnmental plicies prfitable.
The public can d that by accusing businesses f harming them. The public may als make their pinin felt by chsing t buy sustainably harvested prducts; by preferring their gvernments t award valuable cntracts t businesses with a gd envirnmental track recrd; and by pressing their gvernments t pass and enfrce laws and regulatins requiring gd envirnmental practices.
In turn, big businesses can exert pwerful pressure n any suppliers that might ignre public r gvernment pressure. Fr instance, after the US public became cncerned abut the spread f a disease, transmitted t humans thrugh infected meat, the US gvernment intrduced rules demanding that the meat industry abandn practices assciated with the risk f the disease spreading. But the meat packers refused t fllw these, claiming that they wuld be t expensive t bey. Hwever, when a fast-fd cmpany made the same demands after custmer purchases f its hamburgers drpped, the meat industry fllwed immediately. The public’s task is therefre t identify which links in the supply chain are sensitive t public pressure.
