I’m in a cffee shp in Manhattan and I’m abut t becme the mst disliked persn in the rm. First I’m ging t interrupt the man reading quietly near the windw and ask fr a drink f his latte. Next, I’m ging t ask the line f peple waiting t pay if I can cut t the frnt f the queue. This is hw I chse t spend my last vacatin. Here’s why.
Grwing up, all I ever heard abut was “EQ.” It was the mid-1990s, and psychlgist Daniel Gleman had just ppularized the cncept f emtinal intelligence. Unlike IQ, which tracked cnventinal measures f intelligence like reasning and recall, EQ measured the ability t understand ther peple — t listen, t empathize (共情), and t appreciate.
My mther, an elementary schl principal, prized brains and hard wrk, but she placed a special emphasis n Gleman’s new idea. T her, EQ was the elixir (万能药) that separated the gd students frm the great after they left schl. She was determined t send me int the adult wrld with as much f this elixir as pssible.
But when I finally began my first jb, I nticed a secnd elixir in the pckets f sme f my clleagues. It gave their pinins extra weight and their decisins added impact. Strangest f all, it seemed like the anti-EQ: Instead f knwing hw t make thers feel gd, this elixir gave peple the curage t d the ppsite — t say things thers didn’t want t hear.
This was assertiveness (魄力). It biled dwn t the cmmand f a single skill: the ability t have uncmfrtable cnversatins. Assertive peple — thse with high “AQ”— ask fr things they want, decline things they dn’t, prvide cnstructive feedback, and engage in direct cnfrntatin (对峙) and debate.
A lifetime imprving my EQ helped me empathize with thers, but it als left me verly sensitive t situatins where I had t say r d things that might make thers unhappy. While I didn’t avid cnflict, I was always frustrated by my pwerlessness when I had t say r d smething that culd upset smene. This is my prblem and I’m wrking n it.
4. Why did the authr act that way in the cffee shp?
A. T imprve a skill.B. T test a cncept.
C. T advcate a new idea.D. T have a unique vacatin.
5. What d we knw abut the authr’s mther?
A. She thught little f IQ.
B. She ppularized Gleman’s idea.
C. She was a strict mther and principal.
D. She valued EQ as the key t greatness.
6. What des the wrd “it” underlined in the furth paragraph refer t?
A. EQ.B. AQ.C. Empathy.D. Curage.
7. Accrding t the passage, thse with high EQ but lw AQ are likely t be ______.
A. successful leadersB. peple pleasers
C. terrible cmplainersD. pleasure seekers

The envirnmental practices f big businesses are shaped by a fundamental fact that ffends ur sense f justice. A business may maximize the amunt f mney it makes by damaging the envirnment and hurting peple. When gvernment regulatin is effective, and the public is envirnmentally aware, envirnmentally clean big businesses may ut-cmpete dirty nes, but the reverse is likely t be true if gvernment regulatin is ineffective and the public desn’t care.
It is easy t blame a business fr helping itself by hurting ther peple. But blaming alne is unlikely t prduce change. It ignres the fact that businesses are nt charities but prfit-making cmpanies, and they are under bligatin t maximize prfits fr sharehlders by legal means.
Our blaming f businesses als ignres the ultimate respnsibility f the public fr creating the cnditins that let a business prfit thrugh destructive envirnmental plicies. In the lng run, it is the public, either directly r thrugh its pliticians, that has the pwer t make such destructive plicies unprfitable and illegal, and t make sustainable envirnmental plicies prfitable.
The public can d that by accusing businesses f harming them. The public may als make their pinin felt by chsing t buy sustainably harvested prducts; by preferring their gvernments t award valuable cntracts t businesses with a gd envirnmental track recrd; and by pressing their gvernments t pass and enfrce laws and regulatins requiring gd envirnmental practices.
In turn, big businesses can exert pwerful pressure n any suppliers that might ignre public r gvernment pressure. Fr instance, after the US public became cncerned abut the spread f a disease, transmitted t humans thrugh infected meat, the US gvernment intrduced rules demanding that the meat industry abandn practices assciated with the risk f the disease spreading. But the meat packers refused t fllw these, claiming that they wuld be t expensive t bey. Hwever, when a fast-fd cmpany made the same demands after custmer purchases f its hamburgers drpped, the meat industry fllwed immediately. The public’s task is therefre t identify which links in the supply chain are sensitive t public pressure.
Sme readers may be disappinted r utraged that I place the ultimate respnsibility fr business practices harming the public n the public itself. I als believe that the public must accept the necessity fr higher prices fr prducts t cver the added csts f sund envirnmental practices. My views may seem t ignre the belief that businesses shuld act in accrdance with mral principles even if this leads t a reductin in their prfits. But I think we have t recgnize that, thrughut human histry, gvernment regulatin has arisen precisely because it was fund that nt nly did mral principles need t be made explicit, they als needed t be enfrced.
My cnclusin is nt a mralistic ne abut wh is right r wrng, admirable r selfish. I believe that changes in public attitudes are essential fr changes in businesses’ envirnmental practices.
8. The main idea f Paragraph 3 is that envirnmental damage__________.
A. is the result f ignrance f the public
B. requires plitical actin if it is t be stpped
C. can be prevented by the actin f rdinary peple
D. can nly be stpped by educating business leaders
9. In Paragraph 4, the writer describes ways in which the public can__________.
A. reduce their wn individual impact n the envirnment
B. learn mre abut the impact f business n the envirnment
C. raise awareness f the effects f specific envirnmental disasters
D. influence the envirnmental plicies f businesses and gvernments
10. What pressure was given by big business in the case f the disease mentined in Paragraph 5?
A. Meat packers stpped supplying hamburgers t fast-fd chains.
B. Meat packers persuaded the gvernment t reduce their expenses.
C. A fast-fd cmpany frced their meat suppliers t fllw the law.
D. A fast-fd cmpany encuraged the gvernment t intrduce regulatins.
11. What wuld be the best heading fr this passage?
A. Will the wrld survive the threat caused by big businesses?
B. Hw can big businesses be encuraged t be less driven by prfit?
C. What envirnmental dangers are caused by the greed f businesses?
D. Are big businesses t blame fr the damage they cause t the envirnment?
D
In July 1915, sick James Murray, ne f the early editrs f the Oxfrd English Dictinary (OED), defined ne final wrd. He had devted 36 years t the dictinary. Knwing he wuld nt see the prject cmplete, he wrte his last entry: fr “twilight”.
The stry f Murray’s final days is ne f many memrable tales in “The Dictinary Peple”. Cnceived (构思) in 1857, the OED was a huge crwdsurcing prject cmprising 3,000 peple. The idea was t create a “descriptive” dictinary that tracked wrds’ use and meaning ver time. Vlunteers read widely, mailing in examples f hw “rare, ld-fashined, new” wrds were used. What is surprising abut this randm methd is that it wrked, achieving rder thrugh the large number f cntributrs.
The rigin stry f Sarah Ogilvie’s bk is almst as imprbable as that f the dictinary itself. Ms Ogilvie, an editr fr the OED, went int the archives (档案馆) f Oxfrd University Press and came acrss an ld ntebk. It had belnged t Murray and cntained the names and details f the dictinary vlunteers, mst f whm had previusly been unknwn. “The Dictinary Peple” is her wrk f detective schlarship, presenting the lives behind the names.
The dictinary’s cntributrs are an engaging cast, including ne f Karl Marx’s daughters and J. R. R. Tlkien. Fr sme, the dictinary was smething addictive: ne cntributr supplied 165,061 qutatins. Murray, t, was assiduus. He nce wrte t Gerge Elit t ask abut a wrd chice in “Rmla”, published 17 years earlier.
Ms Ogilvie’s bk is full f strange but interesting tales. Many dictinary lvers engaged in anther crwdsurcing fashin: cllecting and measuring rainwater. The presentatin f the bk is irregular, t, taking its structure frm the wrk it describes. Fr example, in her first chapter, “A fr Archaelgist (考古学家),” she relates the early life f Margaret A. Murray, a pineering Egyptlgist. There are 26 alphabetical (按字母顺序排列的) chapters, each celebrating a grup f cntributrs. This is a clever cncept.
12. What did the OED’s vlunteers d?
A. They deleted the wrds ging ut f use.
B. They listed instances f changes in wrd use.
C. They crrected the misuse f cmmn wrds.
D. They added new wrds t keep up with the times.
13. What des paragraph 3 mainly tell us abut “The Dictinary Peple”?
A. What Ogilvie achieved with it.B. Hw Ogilvie tld the stries in it.
C. What inspired Ogilvie t write it.D. Wh helped Ogilvie t cmplete it.
14. What des the underlined wrd “assiduus” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Hard-wrking.B. Easy-ging.C. Energetic.D. Flexible.
15. What des the authr think f Ms Ogilvie’s bk?
A. Interesting and creative.B. Encuraging and influential.
C. Traditinal and funny.D. Descriptive and surprising.

I’m in a cffee shp in Manhattan and I’m abut t becme the mst disliked persn in the rm. First, I’m ging t interrupt the man reading quietly near the windw and ask fr a drink f his latte.
A 5. D 6. B 7. B
根据文章第五段“This was assertiveness (魄力). It biled dwn t the cmmand f a single skill: the ability t have uncmfrtable cnversatins.(这就是魄力。这可以归结为对一项技能的掌握:进行令人不舒服的对话的能力)”和最后一段“While I didn’t avid cnflict, I was always frustrated by my pwerlessness when I had t say r d smething that culd upset smene. This is my prblem and I’m wrking n it.(虽然我没有避免冲突,但当我不得不说或做一些可能会让别人不安的事情时,我总是因为自己的无能为力而感到沮丧。这是我的问题,我正在努力解决)”可知,提高情商使作者过于敏感,缺乏魄力,且作者正在努力解决这一问题。由此推知,作者在咖啡店里那样做是为了提高一项技能。故选A项。
根据文章第三段“My mther, an elementary schl principal, prized brains and hard wrk, but she placed a special emphasis n Gleman’s new idea. T her, EQ was the elixir (万能药) that separated the gd students frm the great after they left schl.(我的母亲是一所小学的校长,她珍视聪明和努力,但她特别重视戈尔曼的新想法。对她来说,情商是一种万能药,在他们离开学校后,将好学生与优秀学生区分开来)”可知,作者母亲认为情商是一种万能药,即情商是成功的关键。故选D项。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第四段“But when I finally began my first jb, I nticed a secnd elixir in the pckets f sme f my clleagues.(但当我终于开始我的第一份工作时,我注意到我的一些同事口袋里有另一种万能药)”和“Strangest f all, it seemed like the anti-EQ: Instead f knwing hw t make thers feel gd, this elixir gave peple the curage t d the ppsite — t say things thers didn’t want t hear.(最奇怪的是,这似乎是反情商:不知道如何让别人感觉良好,这个长生不老药给了人们做相反事情的勇气——说别人不想听的话)”可知,it指代“另一种万能药”,而且这种药是反情商的,所以这种万能药就是下文第五段中提到的“AQ”,所以划线词it指代的是AQ。
根据文章第二段“Unlike IQ, which tracked cnventinal measures f intelligence like reasning and recall, EQ measured the ability t understand ther peple — t listen, t empathize (共情), and t appreciate.(与IQ不同的是,EQ衡量的是理解他人的能力——倾听、移情(共情)和欣赏的能力。IQ追踪的是推理和回忆等传统智力指标)”和第五段“Assertive peple — thse with high “AQ”— ask fr things they want, decline things they dn’t, prvide cnstructive feedback, and engage in direct cnfrntatin (对峙) and debate.(自信的人——那些“AQ”高的人——要求他们想要的东西,拒绝他们不想要的东西,提供建设性的反馈,参与直接对峙和辩论)”可推知,那些EQ高AQ低的人很可能是取悦别人的人。故选B项。

C 9. D 10. C 11. D

由第三段“Our blaming f businesses als ignres the ultimate respnsibility f the public fr creating the cnditins that let a business prfit thrugh destructive envirnmental plicies. In the lng run, it is the public, either directly r thrugh its pliticians, that has the pwer t make such destructive plicies unprfitable and illegal, and t make sustainable envirnmental plicies prfitable.
由第四段“The public can d that by accusing businesses f harming them. (公众可以通过起诉企业伤害他们来实现这一点。公众也可以通过选择购买可持续收获的产品来表达自己的意见;通过选择本国政府将有价值的合同授予有良好环境记录的企业;并通过敦促其政府通过和执行要求良好环境做法的法律和法规)”可知,在第四段中,作者描述了公众可以影响企业和政府的环境政策的方式。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。由第五段中的“In turn, big businesses can exert pwerful pressure n any suppliers that might ignre public r gvernment pressure. (反过来,大企业可以对任何忽视公众或政府压力的供应商施加强大压力)”和“Fr instance, after the US public became cncerned abut the spread f a disease, transmitted t humans thrugh infected meat, the US gvernment intrduced rules demanding that the meat industry abandn practices assciated with the risk f the disease spreading. But the meat packers refused t fllw these, claiming that they wuld be t expensive t bey. Hwever, when a fast-fd cmpany made the same demands after custmer purchases f its hamburgers drpped, the meat industry fllwed immediately.
由第二段“It is easy t blame a business fr helping itself by hurting ther peple. But blaming alne is unlikely t prduce change. It ignres the fact that businesses are nt charities but prfit-making cmpanies, and they are under bligatin t maximize prfits fr sharehlders by legal means. (对于我们来说,指责一家公司损人利己是件很容易的事情。但指责本身不会产生改变。它忽视了如下事实:企业不是慈善机构而是赚取利润的公司,而拥有股东的上市公司有义务在法律许可的范围内为股东实现利润最大化)”,第三段“Our blaming f businesses als ignres the ultimate respnsibility f the public fr creating the cnditins that let a business prfit thrugh destructive envirnmental plicies. (一些读者可能会感到失望或愤怒,因为我把损害公众的商业行为的最终责任推到了公众身上)”和最后一段中的“I believe that changes in public attitudes are essential fr changes in businesses’ envirnmental practices. (我认为,公众态度的改变对企业环境实践的改变至关重要)”可知,文章论述了企业通过破坏环境和伤害人们来获得利益,这是很正常的,但仅仅指责企业是没用的,还需发挥公众的作用和影响力,D项“大企业对环境造成的破坏应该受到谴责吗?”符合文意。故选D项。

根据第二段中“Cnceived (构思) in 1857, the OED was a huge crwdsurcing prject cmprising 3,000 peple. The idea was t create a “descriptive” dictinary that tracked wrds’ use and meaning ver time. (《牛津英语词典》诞生于1857年,是一个由3000人组成的庞大众包项目。当时的想法是创建一本“描述性”词典,追踪单词的使用和含义。)”可知,牛津英语词典的志愿者广泛阅读,寄来单词用法的例子,目的是追踪单词的使用和意义变化。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“The rigin stry f Sarah Ogilvie’s bk is almst as imprbable as that f the dictinary itself. (Sarah Ogilvie这本书的起源故事几乎和字典本身的故事一样难以置信。)”以及“Ms Ogilvie, an editr fr the OED, went int the archives (档案馆) f Oxfrd University Press and came acrss an ld ntebk. It had belnged t Murray and cntained the names and details f the dictinary vlunteers, mst f whm had previusly been unknwn.
根据划线词前面的内容“Fr sme, the dictinary was smething addictive: ne cntributr supplied 165,061 qutatins. (对于一些人来说,词典是一种令人上瘾的东西:一名贡献者提供了165,061条引用。)”以及后面的内容“He nce wrte t Gerge Elit t ask abut a wrd chice in “Rmla”, published 17 years earlier.( 他曾经写信给Gerge Elit询问她17年前发表的《Rmla》中的一个词的选择问题。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段中“Ms Ogilvie’s bk is full f strange but interesting tales. (Ms Ogilvie女士的书中充满了奇怪但有趣的故事)”,“The presentatin f the bk is irregular, t, taking its structure frm the wrk it describes.(这本书的呈现也是不规则的,它的结构来自于它所描述的工作)”以及“There are 26 alphabetical (按字母顺序排列的) chapters, each celebrating a grup f cntributrs. This is a clever cncept.(全书有26个按字母顺序排列的章节,每个章节都颂扬一群贡献者。这是一个聪明的想法)”可知,最后一段提到这本书的内容奇特而有趣,结构也颇为独特,按字母顺序排列了26章,每一章都展示了一组贡献者。这个“聪明”的概念显示了作者对该书的赞赏。A选项“Interesting and creative.(有趣又有创意)”符合作者的观点。故选A。

下文“This may be temprarily true, yet, a cmparisn is an internal prcess that is ultimately based n ur thughts and sense f self, nt external circumstances. (这可能暂时是正确的,然而,比较是一个内部过程,最终基于我们的思想和自我意识,而不是外部环境)”说明了空处下一句中提到的现象的错误性,C选项“比较甚至会产生误导”总领下文。故选C。
【20题详解】
前文“We can always find smething else t cmpare, anther expectatin we tell urselves we are nt meeting.(我们总能找到其他的东西来比较,我们告诉自己我们没有达到的另一个期望)”表示比较是永远存在的,后文“S cmparisn can destry ur awareness f persnal values gradually.(所以攀比会逐渐破坏我们对个人价值的认识)”说明这样的比较会导致错误的价值观,D选项“我们关注的是别人,而不是对自己有意义的事情”为对于前文原因的补充,符合语境。故选D。
