A sign nearby annunced that they had been reduced in price a yung girl behind the cunter asked her if she wished t examine the silky leg cverings. She smiled as if she had been asked t inspect diamnd jewelry, and started t feel the sft, expensive items. Missus Smmers picked up a black pair and lked at them clsely. Tw red marks suddenly shwed n her pale face. She lked up at the shp girl and said prudly, “Well, I will buy this pair.”
Missus Smmers changed her cttn stckings fr the new silk nes in the ladies’ rest area. She had let herself be cntrlled by sme machine-like frce that directed her actins and freed her f respnsibility.
