In ne experiment, participants (参与者) were tasked with reading a mvie review draft and underlining eye-catching parts fr the reviewer’s benefit. First they saw an example. Several lines f text were underlined, as the task required, but many mistakes were als crrected, shwing effrt that went beynd the task. Sme participants culd see a handwritten nte frm the reviewer saying, “Thank yu s much fr catching thse mistakes!”
Afterward, participants underlined parts in anther article by the reviewer. Then researchers cunted hw many mistakes participants crrected, and asked them hw much they might like t be friends with the reviewer.
The results shwed that participants wh had seen a nte f gratitude were mre willing t crrect mistakes and help ut, and mre likely t want t becme friends with the reviewer, than thse wh hadn’t.
Alge and her team als discvered frm ther survey questins that participants wanted t help and cnnect with the persn receiving the gratitude. “That’s because receiving gratitude marks yu as a persn wh is effective at being supprtive r helpful,” says Alge.
These findings shw that expressing gratitude nt nly strengthens the relatinships between the peple invlved but als influences the peple wh see it in ways that culd reverberate thrughut a grup. If peple in a grup ntice thers’ gd acts and thank them fr their kindnesses, the whle grup culd be encuraged t be kinder t ne anther.
