Lk at the messages and answer the questins.
1 Which message is easier t understand? Which message d yu prefer? Why? 2 Which way d yu use t send messages?
Nw read the passage and check yur predictin.
While waiting utside the cafeteria, I received the fllwing message frm my friend:
It tk me a minute befre I realized what it meant. The signs he used were t say that he’d be running late and wuld be there sn. Instead f replying with a simple “OK, dn’t rush”, I searched fr emjis n my phne that wuld express the same message:
This was my attempt t fllw the trend f cmmunicating with emjis. Emjis are used everywhere, frm text messages t emails, blgs and ther scial media netwrks. With the rapid develpment f scial media, emjis are becming an integral cmpnent f the language we use t express urselves.
The wrd “emji” cmes frm Japanese, literally meaning “picture character”. Emjis are small symbls representing ideas, emtins r feelings. They cme in different categries, such as faces and peple, plants and animals, and fd and drink.
In tday’s wrld, emjis have becme mre and mre ppular. It seems that emjis have clear advantages ver written language. Peple like them because they add emtinal meaning, and are quick and easy t use. In fact, this is similar t the gestures we use when we speak. With a smiling r sad face added t a message r pst, yur reader can “see” yur facial expressin while reading yur wrds. Emjis can als help peple express their feelings when they cannt find the apprpriate wrds. Fr instance, if yur friend is mving acrss the cuntry, yu may just send them a string f crying faces t express yur sadness ver yur separatin.
The use f emjis has even spread t classical literature. A Shakespeare series fr yung readers has taken William Shakespeare’s ppular plays and replaced sme wrds with textspeak and emjis. The intentin f these adaptatins is t make the classics mre accessible t yung readers. Sme peple, hwever, believe that these new versins have taken away the heart and sul f Shakespeare’s plays.
As we can see, emjis have a tendency t pp up all ver the place. Users f emjis say that they facilitate the way in which we cmmunicate and express urselves. But this makes thers, especially educatrs, wrry that we are lsing the ability t cmmunicate prperly using the written wrd, r even the spken wrd. After all, hw many f us tday wuld rather send a message packed with emjis than make a telephne call? Perhaps peple will ne day chse t cmmunicate in pictures, and frget hw t write prperly. On that day, emjis will have becme a real pictrial “language”. But, fr nw, maybe it’s best that we just enjy using them.
1 D yu think the Shakespeare series with emjis is an effective way t encurage yung readers t read the classics? Give yur reasns. 2 What d yu think abut the way peple use emjis? 3 What lifestyle changes des each reading passage in this unit fcus n? What is the cmmn message cnveyed in bth passages?
Wrk in grups. Give a talk abut the sentence frm the passage.
1 Read the sentence and decide whether yu agree r disagree with it. 2 Prvide three reasns t supprt yur ideas and give evidence fr each reasn. Make ntes.
I was watching a superher film the ther day and a thught ccurred t me: where des Superman get changed these days? In the cmics and earlier films, Clark Kent wuld pp int a phne bx t change int his Superman cstume. But these days, phne bxes are hard t find. The main reasn fr this is simply that we dn’t need them anymre. Almst everyne these days carries a mbile phne with them. It is certainly mre cnvenient t take ut a mbile and make a call at the tuch f a buttn than t press a series f lng numbers n a telephne.
And anyne wh happens t leave their mbile phne at hme will still have n use fr a phne bx. Why? Because they are unlikely t remember the number they want t call – that’s smething that ur mbile phnes d fr us these days. And even if we culd remember a number and needed t call it urgently, it wuld still be mre cnvenient t brrw a mbile phne frm smene else than walk arund lking fr a phne bx. S, the phne bx is becming a thing f the past. Pr Clark Kent will have t find smewhere else t change!
The authr starts by writing abut Superman in rder t frm an instant cnnectin with readers, as everyne is familiar with Superman. It als sets the tne f the passage by intrducing sme light-hearted humur.
Phne bxes will disappear in the future. The majr reasn is that almst everyne has a mbile phne and they dn’t need phne bxes any mre.
The supprting arguments are as fllws: 1)Phne bxes are difficult t find. 2) It is cnvenient t take ut a mbile and make a call at the tuch f a buttn than t press a series f lng numbers. 3) Remembering thers’ telephne numbers is nt easy. 4) It is mre cnvenient t brrw a mbile phne frm smene else than walk arund lking fr a phne bx.
Read the stry and answer the questins.
There nce was a little by wh had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag f nails and tld him that every time he lst his temper, he must hammer a nail int the back f the fence.
    Nw write yur passage.
The Electric Fan: a Thing f the Past The days f keeping cl with electric fans are numbered. In recent years there has been a significant decrease in their use, and their bvius shrtcmings cmpared t air cnditiners make their cmplete disappearance in the near future pssible. Firstly, electric fans are far less effective in cling a rm. While the breeze they prduce can feel pleasant, it des nt lwer the verall temperature. Nt nly d air cnditiners achieve this, but their settings can be adjusted s that they can reach a specific, ideal temperature. Secndly, electric fans are ften less efficient at the use f space, as they usually need t be placed n either the flr r a table; in cntrast, air cnditiners are usually hung n walls. But what d yu think – will the electric fan sn be a thing f the past?
