The day I heard that the Rainbw Bkstre was clsing after 50 years f business, I was heartbrken. The bkstre, which was a legendary fixture in the neighbrhd, was a place where anyne culd drp in and cnnect thrugh their lve f bks.
When I hurried t the stre, I saw that the bks were already being packed int bxes. I had a lng chat with Casey, the stre’s elderly wner. Sighing deeply, he tld me hw it was becming difficult t run an independent bkstre. Mst yung peple preferred reading e-bks n tablets. Mre and mre custmers were being attracted by chain stres and nline discunts. I tried t think f sme wrds f sympathy, but I had t admit that the Rainbw Bkstre culdn’t stay in business much lnger.
Childhd memries came back t me s clearly, as if the events had happened nly yesterday. A bunch f us kids wuld frequently drp by the stre after schl. We’d lk at the new bks, r just chat with Old Casey. He knew every bk in the stre and wuld always pick the perfect ne fr us frm a dusty shelf. We spent hurs reading, seated n the stre’s ld but cmfrtable furniture. Casey encuraged us t share ur ideas and cmments n the bks, by writing them n a large bard in ne crner f the stre.
When I left the bkstre, it was becming cld and dark utside. I turned t wave gdbye t Casey, but bth he and his bkstre were already hidden in a thick mist. It made me realize that the bkstre and all that Old Casey had given t the cmmunity culd sn disappear fr gd.
A few mnths later, I was back in the neighbrhd during my spring break and was surprised t see that the Rainbw Bkstre was still there and pen fr business. Its ld brick exterir hadn’t changed, but inside it was like a different wrld. In ne area, a bk reading was being delivered. Nearby, custmers were pring ver shelves selling statinery, psters and ther best-seller-themed gifts. The large bard in the crner had been replaced by a big screen, where custmers’ cmments n the mnth’s best-seller were being displayed. Clearly, the Rainbw Bkstre was in gd, creative hands.
I was tld that the cmmunity had decided t wrk tgether n a campaign t save the Rainbw Bkstre. The campaign had been led by Jennifer Oakley, a saleswman wh had grwn up in the neighbrhd and wh had nw taken ver the bkstre frm Casey.
Under Jennifer’s leadership, the bkstre was being turned int a place fr literature-lving members f the cmmunity t get tgether. It had a café selling rganic fd, and there were nw mre cmmunity events such as bk readings, petry recitals and even jazz cncerts and mvie nights, where peple culd gather t share an experience that culdn’t be dwnladed.
I jined Casey, wh was lking up at the screen n which readers’ cmments kept ppping up. “Well, as yu can see, crprate knwledge cmbined with creativity has brught my humble bkstre int the 21st century! I’m s pleased t see that everything I wanted it t ffer t the cmmunity is still here.”
