Lk at the title f the passage and the pictures. Think abut what the title means.
Nw read the passage and check yur answer.
The crime tk place in a seaside suburb f Cape Twn. Sptting the car with its windw left pen, the greedy thief didn’t hesitate. Within secnds, he had reached inside and run away with a bag f shpping. N matter hw many crimes he cmmitted, the plice were pwerless t arrest him. Yu see, this was n rdinary criminal: it was a chacma babn. Once almst unheard f, scenes like this ne in Cape Twn are nw cmmn all ver the wrld. With fxes in Lndn, muntain lins in San Francisc and wild pigs in Hng Kng, it is almst as if ur cities are being taken ver by wild animals.
Mst f us wuld assume that urban develpment and climate change are respnsible fr pushing the animals ut f their natural habitats. Hwever true this is, we als need t cnsider that sme f these s-called “urban animals” have never mved at all – it’s we humans wh have mved int their territry. Wherever they g, animals find twns and cities in their way. With nwhere else t make their hmes, they have n chice but t mve in with us.
As ur cities becme greener, they ffer increasingly appealing spaces t animals lking fr new habitats. Out f reach frm many f their natural predatrs, these newcmers ften flurish in their new city lives. Tday, fxes can be seen all ver Lndn – ne even being fund living n the 72nd flr f the Shard building when it was under cnstructin! What’s mre, hungry animals are finding plenty t eat in ur gardens and in the leftvers we thrw away.
There is evidence that urban racns are mre intelligent than their wild cusins, as they frequently have t figure ut difficult prblems such as hw t pen rubbish bins and ther cntainers which they wuld nt find in the wild. Sme animals have even changed their living habits t fit in with their new hmes. Althugh naturally active at night, urban fxes cme ut in daylight if the reward is gd enugh. Their city lcatin als means that they are getting a taste fr the multicultural cuisine n ffer frm the garbage, such as hamburgers, lamb kebabs and even garlic bread!
Unable t distinguish between blue sky and glass, birds crash int windws at speeds f abut 50 kilmetres per hur. Recent studies estimate that between 400 millin and 1 billin birds die frm windw impacts each year in the US alne. Shckingly, these deaths amunt t arund ten per cent f the ttal US bird ppulatin. Sme species are mre affected than thers. One thery behind this is that these birds have yet t change their migratry rutes that take them thrugh cities with high-rise buildings.
Hwever they adapt t ur ways f urban living, it’s imprtant that we get a better understanding f and even learn t appreciate ur wild neighburs. Only then can we lk twards harmniusly sharing ur urban habitats. Whatever the reasns behind these species entering ur cities, ne thing is fr sure – as it’s ften a means f their survival, they culd be with us t stay.
Chse the tpic sentences fr Paragraphs 2–5 and write them n the lines t cmplete the passage.
a One thing crucial t the increasing number f “urban animals” is their ability t adapt. b Peple ften wnder abut the reasns behind this mass urban migratin. c Fr thse animals that dn’t adapt, the city can be a dangerus r even deadly place. d Yet, fr its newest and wildest inhabitants, a city can ffer many benefits.
