It features an exercise bench and resistance system that uses electrmagnetism (电磁) t imitate weight machines. This mnth, entrepreneur Trent Ward and designer Yves Behar are uncvering their design fr a mirrr fitness system, Frme. Frme is reflective like Putnam’s design, uses machine learning t imprve wrkuts like Tnal, and ffers attachments including ankle belts, rpe handles and a heart rate mnitr. When nt in use, the tw arms that frm the resistance system f ld behind it and the display screen disappears, turning Frme int a simple full-length mirrr.
Interest in hme exercise has particularly spiked in recent weeks arund the wrld as physical gyms have temprarily clsed. Hme wrkut apps have seen a significant increase in dwnlads, and trendy brands like Peltn have rlled ut free virtual wrkuts fr everyne stuck indrs. One French athlete wh was kept away frm thers chse t run an entire marathn n his 23-ft balcny.
But beynd the new restrictins affecting daily wrkut rutines, Ward and Behar are tapping int the same cncerns that have made every hme wrkut appealing: the ability t save time and sweat in the privacy f ne’s hme. In an age f persnal metrics(衡量标准)—where ne can measure their heart rate and sleep cycles with smart watches and train fr marathns with AI smart sneakers — Ward and Behar want t imprve exercise thrugh machine learning. As glbal temperatures rise, trees arund the wrld are experiencing lnger grwing seasns, smetimes as much as three extra weeks a year. All that time helps trees grw faster. Fr the past 100 years, trees have been experiencing fast grwth in temperate regins frm Maryland t Finland, t Central Eurpe, where the grwth rate f sme trees has even sped up nearly 77% since 1870. Assuming wd is just as strng tday, thse gains wuld mean mre timber(木材) fr building, burning, and string carbn captured frm the atmsphere. But is wd really as dense as it used t be?
Hans Pretzsch, a frest scientist at the Technical University f Munich in Germany, and his clleagues wanted t find an answer. They carried ut a study f the frests f Central Eurpe. They started with 41 experimental plts in suthern Germany, sme f which have been cntinuusly mnitred since 1870. Pretzsch and his team tk cre samples frm the trees—which included Nrway spruce, sessile ak , Eurpean beech, and Scts pine—and analysed the tree rings using a high-frequency prbe.
They fund that in all fur species, wd density has decreased by 8% t 12%, they reprt nline in Frest Eclgy and Management. “We expected a trend f the wd density like this, but nt such a strng and significant decrease,” Pretzsch says. Increasing temperatures, and the faster grwth they spur, prbably accunt fr sme f the drp. Anther factr, Pretzsch says, is mre nitrgen in the sil frm agricultural fertilizer(化肥) and vehicle exhaust. Previus studies have linked increased fertilizer use t decreased wd density. Abve all, the study suggests that the higher temperatures—cmbined with pllutin frm aut exhaust and farms—are making wd weaker, resulting in trees that break mre easily and wd that is less durable.
“I am getting wrried,” says Richard Hughtn, an eclgist at the Wds Hle Research Centre in Falmuth, Massachusetts, wh was nt part f the new study. As the density f the samples drpped, s did their carbn cntent, by abut 50%. That means frests may suffer mre damage frm strms and may be less efficient at saking up the greenhuse gas carbn dixide (CO2) than scientists had thught, Hughtn says.

A.farming slws trees’ grwthB.mre areas are cvered with frests

A.great lss might be causedB.strm damage can be prevented
C.the size f frests might be increasedD.less greenhuse gases can be sent ut
31.What is the best title fr the passage?
A.We nly have ne earthB.Trees—ur best friends

The team ran the prject frm an ice-breaking ship. T lcate the Endurance, the team used tw underwater rbts called Sabertths. The rbts culd travel by themselves under the ice and g where the ship culd nt. Fr the last tw weeks, the Sabertth rbts have been searching the sea flr in a 390-square kilmeter area.
The rbts were lking fr anything abve the sea flr. Last Saturday, the ship was fund. Once the ship was lcated, the Sabertths used high-quality cameras t recrd the Endurance in detail. Antarctica’s waters are prtected by an internatinal agreement, which means the ship can’t be disturbed. S the “Endurance 22” team plans t create a digital 3D mdel f the wreck(失事) site. This will allw scientists t study the ship in de tail withut disturbing it.

A.“Endurance 22” Annunced a Great Discvery
B.A Plar Explrer’s Ship Fund After Over 100 Years
