    1. What rles d scial netwrking and the lnternet play in yur daily life? What d yu use them fr?
    ACTIVATE AND SHARE
    2. Hw many nline friends d yu have? D scial netwrking and the Internet help imprve yur relatinships with thers? Give sme examples.
    READ AND EXPLORE
3 Mark has 500 friends nline and he spends a lt f time n the lnternet. Predict what Mark will say abut scial netwrking and his relatinships with thers. Then read and check.
Where am I? What am I ding? if yu’re ne f my 500 friends nline, yu’ll always be the first t knw. My phne and laptp are never ut f tuching distance, s I’m cnstantly psting updates n scial media — whether I’m having a cffee, n my way t schl, watching TV ... even when I’m in the shwer, As sn as I pen mv eyes in the mrning, I check thrugh all my scial netwrking apps, read my emails and answer text messages, I d the same thing all ver again while I’m having breakfast.
I live in a university drm with a cuple f great rmmates. I have a never-ending flw f messages and updates frm all the peple I assciate with nline, Yet the truth f the matter is: I feel lnely.
I’m barely the nly persn wh feels this way. Accrding t research, ver tw-thirds f yung peple find it easier t make friends nline than it is “in real life”. I’m way beynd a shy r reserved persn, but I’m wired up every day, like mst f my friends. On the surface, I have an active scial life. I attend parties and play sprts but I’m always distracted. They say that phnes bring peple clser tgether but in reality, my mind is always a millin miles away. I bsess ver exactly hw many fllwers I have n my accunt, but I can’t remember the birthdays f sme f my ldest mates.
Scial netwrking dminates my life in s many ways. Smetimes I set deadlines fr myself: I will start ding my hmewrk at 8 pm, and aim t finish in tw hurs. At 7.50 pm, I’m still scrlling thrugh my friends’ silly psts and phts, Befre I knw it, it’s 9.30 pm and I still haven’t mved an inch frm the sfa. I dwnlad sng after sng, vide after vide, but I’m nt really paying attentin, The stimulatin is in chasing after the next sng rather than truly enjying it. My friends try t drag me away frm my phne, but as sn as I’m alne again, I’m desperate t get back t the nline wrld and the intense activity that it prvides.
I cnstantly feel depressed, dissatisfied and alne. Since I spend s much time scialising nline. I keep delaying things that are imprtant in my real life: hmewrk, tasks, cnnecting with my friends and family members in a meaningful way, It's funny that my friends and I chatter away nline s much, but we end up having nthing t say when we meet.
A few days ag, I went ut fr a dinner get-tgether with sme friends. My best friend left the table fr 30 minutes because he had t take a call. Sme spent the dinner bending ver their phnes. texting friends nline but ignring the nes wh sat right in frnt f them. And the extrardinary thing is nbdy thught this was rude; it’s just hw life is nwadays. On a family hliday last summer. my sister spent all her time cmplaining that she needed t charge her phne. When it was charged, she just spent hurs reading abut her favurite ppstar; nt nce did she lift her head t enjy the view utside her windw.
What is really wrrying is that n ne I knw, including myself, culd g cld turkey. I can’t even imagine ging withut scial netwrking fr a week - think f all the imprtant appintments, invitatins and news updates yu wuld miss! Alchlics wh want t quit drinking can avid bze, but hw d we give up ur phnes? After all, I need it fr my studies because my teachers and classmates need t cntact me at any time.S, that’s the prblem with scial netwrking. We’re hard-wired in, but we’re mre discnnected than ever.
4 Read the text. Cmplete the infrmatin abut Mark. Then use examples t talk abut hw scial netwrking has affected Mark's life.
pst updates n scial media; check thrugh his scial netwrking apps, read his emails and answer text messages; bsess ver the fllwers he has n his accunt; scrll thrugh his friends’ psts and phts; dwnlad sng after sng, vide after vide; chatter away nline with his friends
make them mre discnnected than ever
afraid t miss sme imprtant ntices, deadlines, appintments and invitatins; cntact his classmates and teachers at any time

Why des Mark say we are mre discnnected than ever?
