Sme peple never read any bks again and feel that since they already knw the utcme, there is nthing t be gained by rereading. I have t dissent.
I am reminded f a prfessr in cllege, wh always had us read ur assignments twice. “The first time, read fast and fr fun,” he said. “The secnd time, lk fr delicate distinctins and small differences in meaning.” His suggestin wrks great fr me.
When I have a new bk, I read fast, eager t discver the reslutin. Then if I like the bk, I will read it again. Nt right away, but a few mnths later, pssibly n a rainy Sunday afternn, I will grab the bk and settle dwn t discver the small details. I will read mre slwly the secnd time, appreciating the descriptins and lking frward t my favrite sectins, enjying the anticipatin. Knwing thse favrite passages are cming des nt spil anything. I'm lking frward t revisiting thse treasured places in the bk. Knwing they are cming heightens my enjyment.
Rereading a bk gives me a chance t appreciate the small things an authr integrates int her stry. A turn f a character’s head, a thught in the night, a sigh, these are the things that give insights int a bk and the characters. I lve dissecting (剖析) a stry the secnd time arund, lking fr clues that give the tale a deep meaning. Reading is like revisiting a friend, familiar, yet always with smething mre inside.
What have I been reading lately? The Merlin Trilgy by Mary Stewart. These bks rank amng my all-time favrite rereads. Set in Britain in rughly the secnd half f the 5th century CE, they were Mary Stewart’s take n the familiar King Arthur stries. If yu are unfamiliar with them, I highly recmmend all three bks, especially if yu lve fantasy and histrical fictin.

    A. Understand.B. Disagree.C. Cmplain.D. Discntinue.
    25. Accrding t the authr’s prfessr, what shuld ne d during the secnd reading?
    A. Lk fr assignment clues.B. Pay attentin t the finer details.
    C. Stick t the mst interesting sectins.D. Skip sme parts t get t the end fast.
    26. What des the authr enjy abut rereading a bk?
    A. Visiting the places mentined in the bk.
    B. Discvering the reslutin f the stry quickly.
    C. Finding ut the lessns learned by the characters.
    D. Appreciating the writer’s strytelling techniques.
    27. What is The Merlin Trilgy?
    A. The authr's new favrites.
    B. A series f science-fictin nvels.
    C. Bks based n ancient British stries.

When Kurt Benirschke started cllecting skin samples frm endangered animals in 1972, he didn’t have a firm plan n what t d with them. As a researcher at the University f Califrnia San Dieg, he believed that ne day these samples wuld be used t save these animals. A few years later, he mved his cllectin t the San Dieg Z, and called it the Frzen Z.
Fr a lng time, it was the nly prject f its kind; hwever, in recent years, similar cnservatin effrts have spread glbally, and tls Benirschke didn’t have are nw available. Tday, the Frzen Z is the wrld’s largest animal crybank (生物冷冻库), hlding samples frm ver 10,500 individual animals frm 1,220 species, in the hpe that ne day science can bring them back as a species.
The Frzen Z’s advanced technlgy is the key t its success in saving species frm extinctin. By using crypreservatin techniques, the z can stre cells and tissues frm endangered animals. The stred genetic material can be used fr research, breeding (繁殖) prgrams, and ptentially clning r genetic engineering t restre endangered species.
By prtecting the genetic heritage f endangered animals, the Frzen Z prvides hpe fr the survival f species that wuld therwise be at risk f dying ut. It has inspired the establishment f similar crybanks wrldwide, expanding effrts t cnserve endangered species. These crybanks cntribute t the glbal netwrk f genetic resurces, imprving cperatin and knwledge exchange. By demnstrating the ptential f technlgy in the preservatin f bidiversity, the Frzen Z serves as a pwerful tl in raising awareness and driving change.
The Frzen Z is like a time capsule, preserving the genetic heritage f endangered species fr future generatins. It reminds us abut the imprtance f cnservatin and ffers a windw int a wrld that culd therwise be lst frever.
    28. What d we knw abut the Frzen Z?

    C. T prve the ptential value f preserving bidiversity.
    D. T demnstrate the necessity f cperative cnservatin effrts.
    31. What wrds culd best describe the Frzen Z prject?
    A. Cstly and wrthwhile.B. Prfitable and instructive.
    C. Cnservative and effective. D. Pineering and significant.

These days, Fred’s huge skeletn (骨架) is exhibited in the Indiana State Museum. His tusks (长牙) were recently the subject f a research study tracing the life 13,000 years ag f mastdns, distant relatives f mdern elephants.
By analyzing the chemical cmpunds (化合物) in Fred’s tusks, a team f researchers culd cnstruct a detailed accunt f his seasnal migratin patterns. Jsh Miller, a paleeclgist (古生态学家) at the University f Cincinnati, is ne f the researchers studying Fred. “He has beautifully preserved bnes and tusks, which prvides a great pprtunity fr ur research n his seasnal migratin patterns,” Miller said.
Mastdns’ tusks generally grw in distinct layers, similar t the tree rings. As a result, the nutrients that build the layers f their tusks can tell us a lt abut what they experienced. The team particularly fcused their analysis n the variatins in tw elements in the layers: strntium (锶) and xygen. The frmer is the key t understanding where Fred spent his life, while the latter tells us the seasn he was in any particular regin. Then, with sme statistical mdeling, Miller and his team gained insight int the daily recrd f Fred’s behavir ver ten thusand years ag.
The result indicated that Fred wuld have grwn a lt when he was yung. But there’s a year when his grwth is reduced. “Prbably like the mdern male elephant, a male mastdn is just really bnxius when grwing up t be a bther and ften aruses family members’ anger. At that pint, the mm and aunts will essentially kick him ut f the family.” Miller predicted.
After Fred set ff t attend t himself, his tusks reflected where he travelled arund. Based n the analysis, Fred wuld return t mate every summer in Nrtheastern Indiana, because his tusks started t shw signs f injuries arund this time. When cmpeting fr mates, mastdns get int huge battles with their wn natural weapns sharp tusks. And that was exactly what brught Fred’s stry t an untimely end.
    32. What did Miller’s study mainly fcus n?
    A. Effective ways f tusk preservatin. B. Inner structure f Fred’s skeletn.
    C. Pssible tracks f Fred’s migratin. D. Special functins f mastdn tusks.
    33. Hw did researchers learn abut Fred’s behavir in the ancient age?
    A. By analyzing nutrients in Fred’s bnes.
    B. By reviewing statistical recrds f previus studies.
    C. By mdeling data f chemical elements in Fred’s tusks.
    D. By referring t the grwth f tree rings t study Fred’s tusk layers.
    34. What can be inferred abut Fred frm the last paragraph?
    A. He was killed by his ppnents. B. He reunited with his family later.
    C. He was drawn t crss-species fights. D. He was weak in living independently.
    35. In which sectin f a newspaper will the article appear?
    Gelgy.B. Culture.C. Educatin.D. Science.

I wiped away my tears and lked fr the signs which culd lead me t the infrmatin cunter. Fllwing the signs, I reached the infrmatin cunter. I nervusly asked the lvely staff t help me find my parents. The lady reassured me with a kind smile, befre beginning her annuncement int the speaker, “Attentin, there’s a missing child at the infrmatin cunter at Terminal D...”
A few minutes later, my parents, extremely breathless, appeared at the infrmatin cunter. My face lit up as sn as I saw them. “Mum! Dad!” I called ut. I ran as fast as my little legs culd carry me and jumped int my mther’s welcming arms. With tears streaming dwn her face, my mther praised me fr staying calm. Excitedly, I filled my parents in n my little adventure, frm realising I had gtten lst t finally reuniting with them. After listening t my tale, they envelped me in a warm hug.
