A new study suggests that smke frm wildfires can change hw cluds stre water and culd lead t less rainfall The research cmes as western parts f the United States are currently experiencing drught cnditins after several years f intense wildfire activity.
Cluds cntain a cllectin f water drplets (微滴) that frm frm vapr in the atmsphere. When these drplets cndense (凝结) nt each ther within a clud, they becme heavier and eventually fall as rain. But the water cndensatin prcess requires a slid substance fr the vapr t attach t. Different kinds f particles rising up frm the Earth’s surface can reach cluds and make this prcess pssible.
The new study fund that smke frm wildfires cntains small particles that affect the way drplets frm in cluds. The main effect was the number f water drplets frmed. The team reprted that smky cluds cntained abut five times the number f drplets as nn-smky cluds. But data als shwed that the drplets in smky cluds were much smaller, abut half the size f thse in the cluds withut wildfire smke.
It is that size difference, the researchers say, that culd reduce the amunt f rainfall. This is because small drplets are less likely t grw and eventually fall t the grund as rain. “Because f their small drplet sizes, these smky cluds are expected t reflect mre light and prduce less rain than cluds in clean air,” the study states.
The findings culd mean that active wildfire seasns in the western U. S. may in fact lead t less rain and mre drught, the researchers said. “We were surprised at hw effective these primarily rganic particles were at frming clud drplets and what large impacts they had n the micrphysics (微观物理) f the cluds,” said Cynthia Twhy, leader f the new study.
Twhy als nted that different kinds f cluds behave differently. The current study examined changes in small cumulus cluds. Other kinds that sit much higher in the atmsphere can cause heavy strms, she said. Twhy added, “I am hping these results will lead t detailed reginal mdeling studies that will help us understand the actual impact f smke n cluds and climate.”
32. Why did the researchers cnduct the study?
A. They aren’t sure hw water drplets frm frm vapr.
B. There is a great climate change in America.
C. The US has serius drught after wildfires.
D. They wnder hw smky cluds appear.
33. What is a characteristic f smky cluds?
A They tend t reflect mre light.
B. They ften have lwer temperatures than thers.
C. They cntain mre drplets which are larger in size.
D. They have fewer particles fr the vapr t attach t.
34. What culd smky cluds lead t accrding t the text?
A. Less rainfall.
B. Much cler weather.
C. Fewer windy days.
D. Mre strms.
35. What is the main idea f the text?
A. There are many reasns fr the US drught.
B. Wildfire smke can make cluds prduce less rain.
C. Organic particles play an imprtant rle in frming cluds.
D. Humans have t face the serius cnsequences f wildfires.
