As I lk up at the hundreds f firewrks in the sky, I hear the bells ringing in a small temple suggesting the cming f the Chinese New Year. Thugh I may nt believe in r understand many f the New Year traditins here, the similarities between the cming f this New Year and the beginning f my new life in China are nt lst n me.
My first few days in China were a culture shck t say the least. Having arrived late in the term, I immediately had t start my beginners’ Chinese classes, alng with the newest class f verseas students. Being surrunded by a language that is nt yur wn is unbelievably frustrating and islating(孤立的). Due t the picture-based fashin f Chinese writing, it’s nt like yu can have a guess, r wrk it ut thrugh whatever little knwledge yu have ther Latin-riginated languages. If yu dn’t knw what it says, then that’s it.
Hwever, with time passing, I have fund myself prgressing, thugh painfully slwly. The first time I directed a taxi by myself, the driver actually understd where I wanted t g, which was hugely rewarding. Still, it is never lng until my lack f language skill is expsed and I cme crashing back t earth, usually immediately upn leaving the taxi.
Gaining a language is a huge valuable skill. Hwever, it is nt the nly thing I will gain in China. After this year f learning Chinese, I aim t gain my Master’s degree here at UJN. Opprtunities d just pp up rather ccasinally: frm being ffered jbs teaching English, t being asked t appear n game-shws fr Shandng TV. S, fr nw, I am just lking frward t expanding my cultural hrizns and enjying my time here. Everything takes sme time getting used t, but that’s part f the adventure and, mst f all, emplyment. S, much like the Chinese New Year that I was lucky enugh t be part f, I am just lking frward t a fresh start and a new jurney in China.

Artificial intelligence(AI)is shwing prmise in earthquake predictin, challenging the lng-held belief that it is impssible. Researchers at the University f Texas, Austin, have develped an AI algrithm(算法)that crrectly predicted 70% f earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and prvided accurate strength calculatins fr the predicted earthquakes.
The research team adpted a relatively simple machine learning apprach. The AI was prvided with a set f statistical features based n the team’s knwledge f earthquake physics, and then instructed t train itself using a five-year database f earthquake recrdings. Once trained, the AI prvided its predictin by listening fr signs f incming earthquakes within the backgrund rumblings(隆隆声)in the Earth.
This wrk is clearly a milestne in research fr AI-driven earthquake predictin. “Yu dn’t see earthquakes cming,” explains Alexandrs Savvaidis, a senir research scientist wh leads the Texas Seismlgical Netwrk Prgram (TexNet).“It’s a matter f millisecnds, and the nly thing yu can cntrl is hw prepared yu are. Even with the 70% accuracy, that’s a huge result and culd help minimize ecnmic and human lsses and has the ptential t remarkably imprve earthquake preparatin wrldwide.”
While it is unknwn whether the same apprach will wrk at ther lcatins, the researchers are cnfident that their AI algrithm culd prduce mre accurate predictins if used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking netwrks. The next step is t test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet has 300 earthquake statins and ver six years wrth f cntinuus recrds, making it an ideal lcatin fr these purpses.
Eventually, the authrs hpe t cmbine the system with physics-based mdels. This strategy culd prve especially imprtant where data is pr r lacking. “That may be a lng way ff, but many advances such as this ne, taken tgether, are what mves science frward,” cncludes Sctt Tinker, the bureau’s directr.
28. Hw des the AI predict earthquakes?
A. By identifying data frm the satellites.
B. By analyzing backgrund sunds in the Earth.
C. By mdeling data based n earthquake recrdings.
D. By mnitring changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.
29. What des Alexandrs Savvaidis intend t shw in paragraph3?
A. The ways t reduce lsses in earthquakes.
B. The imprtance f preparing fr earthquakes.
C. The significance f develping the AI predictin.
D. The limitatin f AI algrithms in earthquake predictin.
30. What des the fllw-up research fcus n?
A. Cnducting tests in different lcatins.
B. Applying the AI apprach t ther fields.
C. Building mre earthquake statins in Texas.
D. Enlarging the database t train the calculatin accuracy.
31. Which wrds can best describe the earthquake-predicting technlgy?
A. Stable but utdated. B. Effective but cstly.
C. Ptential and ecnmical. D. Advanced and prmising.

Initial cnversatins can have a huge impact n hw relatinships develp ver time. Peple are ften stuck in the impressins they think they might have made the minute they finish speaking with smene fr the first time: “Did they like me r were they just being plite?” “Were they deep in thught r deeply bred?”
T find ut whether these wrries are necessary, we have cnducted nearly 10 years f research. In ur studies, participants in the UK talked with smene they had never met befre. Afterward, they were asked hw much they liked their cnversatin partner and hw much they believed that their cnversatin partner liked them. This allwed us t cmpare hw much peple believed they were liked t hw much they were actually liked.
Time and time again, we fund that peple left their cnversatins with negative feelings abut the impressin they made. That is, peple systematically underestimate(低估)hw much their cnversatin partners like them and enjy their cmpany—a false belief we call the “liking gap”.
This bias(偏见)may seem like smething that wuld ccur nly in initial interactins, but its effects extend far beynd a first impressin. Surprisingly, the liking gap can cnstantly affect a variety f relatinships, including interactins with cwrkers, lng after the initial cnversatins have taken place. Having a larger liking gap is assciated with being less willing t ask wrkmates fr help, less willing t prvide wrkmates with pen and hnest feedback, and less willing t wrk n anther prject tgether.
There are numerus strategies t minimize yur biased feelings. One place t start is shifting yur fcus f attentin. Try t direct yur attentin t yur cnversatin partner, be genuinely curius abut them, ask them mre questins, and really listen t their answers. The mre yu pay attentin t the ther persn, and the less yu fcus n yurself, the better yur cnversatin will be and the less yur mind will turn t all the things yu think yu didn’t d well.
32. Why did the authr carry ut 10 years f research?
A. T remve natinal cncerns. B. T check ut a ptential bias.
C. T imprve human cmmunicatin. D. T develp harmnius relatinships.
33. What is ne effect f peple’s liking gap?
A. Lw willingness t interact with thers. B. Underestimatin f their ability.
C. Bad relatinships with peple arund. D. Fewer chances f new prjects.
34. What des the authr intend t d in the last paragraph?
A. Restate pinins. B. Give suggestins.
C. Deliver warnings. D. Make a summary.
35. Which might be the best title fr the text?
A. Liking Gap May Influence Wrk Perfrmances
B. First Impressins Rely On Initial Cnversatins
C. Peple Prbably Like Yu Mre Than Yu Think
D. Hw Peple Like Yu Matters Less Than Yu Assume
