Seeking a brader, inexpensive apprach, Lisa Hlt and Samuel Jhnstn at the charity PADs fr Parkinsn's in Washingtn state fund 23 pet dgs f 16 breeds. These included breeds previusly used t detect different medical cnditins, as well as thse nt raised fr this purpse. 43 peple with Parkinsn's and 31 vlunteers withut knwn medical cnditins prvided sebum (皮脂), either frm T-shirts wrn vernight r their upper backs. Thse with Parkinsn's prduce hundreds f specific chemicals in their sebum.
Each dg was trained t sit r bar k (吠) when recgnizing Parkinsn's sample(样本). T stimulate them, each sample prvided by a participant with Parkinsn's was paired with fd r a ty. Once their training was cmplete, the dgs were shwn sebum samples they hadn't previusly met. Overall, the dgs recgnized the samples frm smene with Parkinsn's with 86 percent accuracy, n average, and didn't respnd t the healthy vlunteers' samples 89 percent f the time.
Testing f the training prgramme is cntinuing at the Alfrt Natinal Veterinary Schl in France, says Hlt. “Once that training was dne, it wuld then be pssible t test whether dgs culd recgnize Parkinsn's at a much earlier stage,” she says. Hwever, despite testing several breeds, the data aren't enugh t cnclude which nes detect Parkinsn's best, adds Hlt.
