Dr. Tijana Blanusa, the principal scientist f the Ryal Hrticultural Sciety (RHS), has a passin fr bth science and the well-being f children. When she std at the gate f her children’s schl, an idea flashed her mind: What if there are mre hedges (树篱) in playgrunds? Therefre, she decided t start a prject t find ut the best species f hedge t plant in urban areas.
Dr. Blanusa's inspiratin fr this research came frm a persnal realizatin. As a parent herself, she nticed that her wn children had very limited access t nature in their urban state primary schl. “We’ve lked at hedges because they’re cheap, peple can relate t them, and they can d sme gd things fr relatively little mney in the urban envirnment in terms f imprving air quality, and maybe reducing nise.”
Abut 90 pupils f 10 years ld will be invlved in the experiment. A mix f hedges were planted brdering the radside in the schl playgrund at He Valley schl, Wking. Then a weather statin was set up where the pupils can take measurements f the leaf surface’s ability t influence sil misture (水分) and the temperatures arund the hedge. Then they will take mre measurements as time ges n.
The children will be invlved in learning mre abut the rle f plants in imprving air quality and summertime cling thrugh hands-n science classes in schl, led by the science team. They will get an insight int what wrking as a scientist invlves—planning and taking measurements n the hedge and frm the sil, and then analyzing cllected data. Results will be available in late spring.
Blanusa hpes that the prject can be rlled ut acrss the cuntry, and the RHS is figuring ut hw t d that. “We really want t make it as easy as practically pssible fr ther schls t d it. But because yu are wrking with living things, they need lking after and that needs t be a persn n site wh knws hw t d it.”
    24. What is the main aim f the prject?
    A. T reduce urban nise levels.
    B. T increase hedges in schlyards.
    C. T identify best hedge species fr cities.
    D. T bst green spaces in public schls.
    25. What mtivated Blanusa t cnduct her research?
    A. Air Pllutin ut f schl.
    B. Kids' lack f nature access.
    C. Schl principal’s request.
    D. Hedge educatin fr kids.
    26. What d the students gain frm participating in this prject?
    A. Experience n science team.
    B. Hedge planting withut sil.
    C. Cuntry-wide prject rllut.
    D. Hands-n wrk as a scientist.
What's a majr bstacle fr Blanusa in expanding the prject?

    B. A tight budget.
    C. Strict regulatins.
    D. Limited hedge species.

Ever wndered hw many steps yu shuld really be aiming fr each day t stay healthy? A study, led by the University f Granada (UGR) and published in ne f the wrld's leading jurnals, identifies fr the first time the number f steps at which mst peple btain the greatest benefits.
The study has prvided the first scientific prf fr daily step cunt t significantly reduce the risk f premature death: 8,000. It cntradicts the ppular belief that ne shuld aim fr 10,000 steps a day—an idea that came ut f Japan in the 1960s but had n basis in science. “We have shwn that the mre steps yu take, the better, and that there is n extra number f steps that has been prven t be harmful t health," explains Francisc B. Ortega, the lead authr f the study.
The findings are based n a cmprehensive analysis f data frm twelve internatinal studies invlving ver 110,000 participants. The study reveals that even small increases in the daily step cunt can lead t measurable health benefits. Fr thse wh lead a less active lifestyle, an additinal 500 steps can already result in health imprvements. “This is gd news because nt everyne can walk almst 9,000 steps a day, at least nt at first, s yu can set small, reachable gals and gradually make prgress and increase the number f steps per day," the researchers suggests.
S, shuld we stp walking when we reach 9000 steps? "Abslutely nt," insists Ortega. "Mre steps are never bad. Our study shwed that even as many as 16,000 steps a day des nt pse a risk.” Hwever, they als nte that the daily step target shuld be age-apprpriate.
"Our study gives peple clear and easily measurable gals," Ortega cncludes. "Cunting steps is much simpler, especially since mst peple have a smartphne r smartwatch these days. The significance f ur study lies in prviding cncrete and measurable targets fr the number f daily steps and thereby cntributing t peple's health."
    28. What can we learn abut the new study?
    A. It riginates frm Japan.
    B. It has reduced death rate.
    C. It has scientific evidence.
    D. It restricts extra daily steps.
    29. What des the underlined wrd “premature” in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Early. B. Unexpected. C. Delayed. D. Sudden.
    30. What d researchers advise inactive individuals t d?
    A. Increase walking pace.
    B. Set achievable step gals.
    C. Track prgress every day.
    D. Add ther frms f exercise.
    31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Pace vs Cunt: Walking Matters
    B. Impact f Walking 16,000 Steps
    C. Cunting with Smart Wearables
    D. 8000 vs 10,000: Mystery slved

What if yur next jb is just a weak tie away? A recent study, cnducted by a team frm Stanfrd University and LinkedIn, revealed that weaker scial cnnectins have a greater beneficial effect n jb mbility(流动性) than strnger ties. Stanfrd Prfessr Erik Brysn suggests a practical utcme f this study is t encurage jb seekers t expand their reach beynd immediate friends and clleagues. Weak ties, he explains, ften prvide mre unique, beneficial infrmatin and cnnectins.
The advantage f weak ties thery is based n the idea that weak ties allw distant grup f peple t access nvel infrmatin that can lead t new pprtunities and innvatin. Weak ties are mre likely t intrduce new jb infrmatin t a wider scial netwrk.
The research team cnducted a five-year experimental study with LinkedIn, invlving 20 millin glbal participants and 600,000 new jbs created. Using LinkedIn's "Peple Yu May Knw" (PYMK) algrithm(算法), the researchers tested the weak tie thery's impact n the jb market. The team randmly assigned LinkedIn users t receive either mre weak r strng tie recmmendatins frm the PYMK algrithm, then tracked the labr mbility f these grups ver five years.
Their findings cnfirm that weaker ties enhance jb mbility. Besides, the researchers lked at differences acrss industries and fund that adding weak ties creates significantly mre jb pprtunities in digital and high-tech industries. “This may reflect the fact that there is mre rapid change and need fr nvel infrmatin and cnnectins in thse industries,” Brysn said.
He pints ut that the traditinal methds used by plicymakers t analyze labr markets are quickly becming utdated. “They need t recgnize that the labr market, like all aspects f the ecnmy, is being digitized,” Brysn said. “It is imprtant that we understand hw the algrithms used by digital platfrms like LinkedIn impact the labr market.”
    32. Accrding t paragraph 1, what shuld jb seekers d?
    A. Expand netwrk t include weak ties.
    B. Limit the search t their current industry.
    C. Strengthen cnnectins with clse friends.
    D. Rely n strng cnnectins fr pprtunities.
    33. Hw did the researchers test the weak tie thery?
    A. By carrying ut n line surveys.
    B. By interviewing LinkedIn emplyers.
    C. By tracking user data and jb mbility.
    D. By cnducting a large-scale jb fair.
34.What can we learn abut digital and high-tech industries?
    A. They are fast-paced and value nvelty.
    B. They cause weak ties amng emplyees.
    C. Strng ties are the main surce f mbility.
    D. Weak ties d nt cntribute t jb mbility.
    35.What might Brysn advise plicymakers t d?
    A. Priritize traditinal methds nly.
    B. Ignre the impact f digital platfrms.
    C. Recgnize the influence f digitizatin.
    D. Understand the rules n digital platfrms.
