A new study invlving nearly 50,000 peple frm fur cntinents ffers new insights int identifying the quantity f daily walking steps that will best imprve adults' health and lngevity(长寿), and whether the ideal number f steps differs acrss peple f different ages. The study represents an effrt t develp an evidence-based public health message abut the benefits f physical activity. The ften-repeated 10,000-step-a-day saying grew ut f a decades-ld marketing activity fr a Japanese pedmeter(计步器), with n science t back it up.
Led by physical activity prfessr Amanda Paluch, an internatinal grup f scientists cnducted an experiment amng adults aged 18 and lder. They gruped the nearly 50,000 participants int fur cmparative grups accrding t average steps per day. The lwest step grup averaged 3,500 steps; the secnd, 5,800; the third, 7,800; and the furth, 10,900 steps per day. Amng the three higher active grups, there was a 40—53% lwer risk f death, cmpared t the lwest step grup.
Mre specifically, fr adults 60 and lder, the risk f early death leveled ff at abut 6,000—8,000 steps per day, meaning that mre steps than that prvided n additinal benefit fr lngevity, while fr adults yunger than 60, abut 8, 000—10,000 steps per day.
"S, what we saw was this cntinuing reductin in risk as the number f steps increases, until it levels ff. Interestingly, the study fund n definitive assciatin with walking speed." Paluch says.
The new study supprts and expands findings frm anther study led by Paluch befre, which fund that walking at least 7,000 steps a day reduced middle-aged peple's risk f early death. "There's a lt f evidence suggesting that mving even a little mre is beneficial, particularly fr thse wh are ding very little activity." Paluch says. "Mre steps per day are better fr yur health."
8. Why did the scientists carry ut the new study?
A . T knw abut peple's health cnditin. B . T explain the pedmeter's wrking principles. C . T determine the best physical activity fr peple. D . T prvide a scientific guideline n daily walking.
9. What des the underlined wrds "leveled ff" in paragraph 3 mean?
A . Turned higher. B . Became stable. C . Fell sharply. D . Changed rapidly.
10. What des the experiment find?
A . The ld shuld walk as much as pssible. B . Yung peple usually walk mre than the ld. C . The mst beneficial steps differ by age grups. D . Walking pace is the key t aviding early death.

Next time yu cnsider striking up a cnversatin with a stranger in line at the grcery stre r while waiting at the laundry, keep in mind that it might be beneficial fr yur well-being. A recent study by a grup f researchers fund that there is a link between happiness and a term that the researchers cined called "relatinal diversity."
Using public data frm surces like the Bureau f Labr Statistics and the Wrld Health Organizatin, the researchers analyzed data sets and survey respnses frm peple wh had shared their daily habits, schedules and interactins. They nticed a clear relatinship between relatinal diversity and verall levels f satisfactin.
Hanne Cllins, a Harvard Business Schl dctral student wh c-authred the study, says that relatinal diversity is cmpsed f tw elements: richness and evenness. Richness measures relatinship categries, r hw many kinds f peple yu interact with in a day. That culd be yur rmantic partner, a family member, a neighbr r a stranger. "The mre relatinship categries they talk t in a day and the mre even their cnversatins are acrss thse categries, the happier they are. And we find this in a large sample acrss many cuntries," Cllins said. Evenness relates t the distributin f cnversatins amng thse different relatinship categries. Sme peple may find themselves interacting with clleagues at wrk mre than, say, their family members. "If yu have a few cnversatins with clleagues, a few with friends, a few with a rmantic partner r a cuple f chats with strangers, that's ging t be mre even acrss these categries," Cllins explained.
Ultimately, Cllins says, the study gives insight t the idea that humans are scial creatures at heart. Having a supprt system is imprtant, but it ges beynd yur inner circle. "It's abut this mix. It's abut cnnecting with peple wh are clse t yu, wh are maybe less clse t yu, wh cnnect yu with ther peple, wh prvide different kinds f supprt, "she said. "Essentially, the idea is that the mre diverse yur scial cnnectins, the happier yu are and the higher yur well-being."
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly abut?
A . The prcedure f the research. B . The analysis f the research data. C . The significance f the research. D . The applicatin f the research findings.
13. Hw des Cllins explain the findings in paragraph 3?
A . By citing experts' wrds. B . By presenting questins. C . By illustrating cncepts. D . By making cmparisn.
14. What des Cllins suggest peple d in the last paragraph?
A . Live a mre psitive life. B . Offer supprt t peple nearby. C . Expand ne's inner circle. D . Cnnect with all kinds f peple.
15. Which is the best title fr the text?
A . Talking t Strangers Might Make Yu Happier B . Relatinal Diversity Decides Yur Happiness C . Human Beings Are Scial Creatures in Nature D . Finding Supprt Benefits Yur Well-being
