Mre than 1 billin children, teenagers and adults live with besity (肥胖) arund the wrld, making it the mst cmmn frm f malnutritin in many cuntries, accrding t a study published n Thursday in the jurnal The Lancet.
“Previus estimates by the Wrld Obesity Federatin suggested that there wuld be 1 billin peple living with besity by 2030, but that number was already vertaken in 2022,” Dr. Majid Ezzati, senir authr f the study and prfessr at Imperial Cllege Lndn, said in a news cnference n Thursday. “We hadn’t expected that the things happened s fast.”
The new glbal study, cnducted by mre than 1,500 researchers frm the Nn-Cmmunicable Diseases Risk Factr Cllabratin and the Wrld Health Organizatin (WHO), analyzed the height and weight measurements f ver 220 millin peple frm mre than 190 cuntries.
The study fcused n rates f underweight and besity, bth frms f malnutritin that are harmful t peple’s health. Adults were regarded as bese if their bdy mass index (指数) (BMI) was greater than r equal t 30 and cnsidered as underweight if their BMI was belw18.5. Children and teenagers were defined as bese r underweight based n age and sex, accrding t the study.
“Undernutritin and besity are tw faces f the same prblem, which is the lack f access t a healthy diet,” Dr. Francesc Branca, directr f the WHO Department f Nutritin and Fd Safety, said in the news cnference. “Public plicy must aim t imprve mnitring f fd prducers and ensure fair access t healthy and nutritius fd fr everyne. France, which saw a steady level in its besity rates in the study, has carried ut a natinal plan called Prgramme Natinal Nutritin Santé that sets bjectives fr nutritinal plicy at the industry, cnsumer and research levels. Infrmatin frm this year’s IQAir Wrld Air Quality Reprt shwed nly seven cuntries met the Wrld Health Organizatin’s pllutin recmmendatins in 2023, which were Australia, Estnia, Finland, Grenada, Iceland, Mauritius and New Zealand. Of the 134 cuntries and regins measured, 124 had higher levels than called fr in the WHO pllutin guidelines.
The reprt said the five cuntries with what it called the lwest air quality had particle (颗粒物) levels at least nine times higher than what the WHO recmmends. Three Suth Asian cuntries — Bangladesh, Pakistan and India — had the wrld’s lwest air quality. In 2022, India was eighth and Bangladesh was fifth.
The infrmatin came frm the Swiss cmpany IQAir. The reprt used measurements frm ver 30,000 statins acrss 134 cuntries. IQAir used the WHO standard f PM 2.5 t measure the size f breathable pllutant particles in the air. The PM2.5 measurement means the particles are 2.5 micrns (微米) r less in diameter (直径). The diameter f human hair, fr example, is abut 30 times larger than a particle f 2.5 micrns.
In Bangladesh, the cncentratin f PM2.5 particles reached 79.9 micrgrams per cubic meter in 2023. In Pakistan, the number was 73.7. India’s level was 54.4, Tajikistan in Central Asia was 49 and Burkina Fas in West Africa was the fifth-mst plluted natin at 46.6.
Firz Khan, an air pllutin expert at Nrth Suth University in Dhaka, Bangladesh, said 20 percent f the early deaths in the cuntry were caused by air pllutin. He added spending n pllutin-related healthcare was equal t fur t five percent f the natin’s ecnmy.
Christi Chester Schreder versees air quality science fr IQair. She said Suth Asia’s gegraphy and climate cnditins influence its air quality. “The pllutin has nwhere t g,” she added. “Because f agricultural practices, industry and ppulatin density, it really des lk like it is ging t get wrse befre it gets better.”
