Rain r shine, Peter O’Neill always cmpetes in the triathln (铁人三项运动) f his twn. The 72-year-ld has cmpeted in every triathln in the event’s 40-year histry. He was part f the grup that came up with the idea in the 1980s.
“I used t jg arund twn,” Mr. O’Neill said. “I came int cntact with an Olympian, David Pwer, and Dave had a htel up here. A few f us gt tgether and we discussed it and gt it ging in Octber, 1983.”
The then 31-year-ld suggested ne f the grup shuld cmpete. “Everyne else culd either ride a bike r run, but I was the nly ne wh culd swim,” he laughed. “But I was happy t give it a g.”
In the beginning, mre than 220 athletes tk part in the event, including 79 individual cmpetitrs and 48 teams. These days it’s a five-day festival—which includes 11 events in all—with mre than 13,000 cmpetitrs.
Rebecca van Pss, head f peratins fr the triathln there, said the event Mr. O’Neill helped t start was nw an internatinal event. “It is the wrld’s largest Olympic-distance triathln,” she said. “That’s smething we’re very prud f.”
“Mr. O’ Neill’s effrts were inspiring. There are a cuple f ther athletes wh have dne 38, 39,” she said. “But Peter, he is the legend (传奇)—it’s pretty amazing t have smene wh’s dne all 40 f ur races.”
Mr. O’Neill trains year-rund fr the event, and enjys the scial side just as much as the physical benefits. “I’ve made s many friends… friends that I ride with and friends I swim with—it’s been wnderful,” he said. “When yu’re in yur 70s like I am, yu’re quite happy t just d it because yu knw it beats the alternative (替代品), which is sitting arund ding nthing.”
