The cncentric circles(同心圆状斑点), als knwn as eyespts n butterfly, nt nly lk like real eyes but may als appear t glare directly at predatrs(捕食者) frm many directins, scientists have fund. This visual illusin, called the “Mna Lisa effect”, culd scare wuld-be attackers and buy the insects enugh time t escape.
Scientists suspect that eyespts, with dark “pupils (瞳孔)” in the center lk like real eyes t predatrs. Hannah Rwland, an eclgist at the Max Planck Institute wanted t see if the directin f this fake gaze cntributed t the effect.
First, Rwland and her c-authr trained chicks t attack a wrm hidden behind a paper printut f tw eyespts at the end f a path. When the eyespts’ pupils were specifically pinted in the chicks’ directin, the birds repeatedly ran tward the paper and then backed away, and they waited a few minutes befre attacking. But when the pupils instead appeared t lk away frm the directin f the chicks’ apprach, the birds attacked in secnds. Centrally lcated pupils, thugh nt as effective as nes that stared directly at the chicks, resulted in lnger delays than pupils that lked the ther way.
“This suggests that they really are paying attentin t the directin f the pupils in the eyespts and are perceiving them as eyelike stimulatin. The cncentric eyespts fund mst ften in the insect wrld may seem t the chicks like a pair f eyes that fllw them regardless f apprach angle,” says Rwland.
Natinal University f Singapre evlutinary bilgist Antnia Mnteir, wh was nt invlved in the research, says the study is a “cl” demnstratin f an evlutinary thery fr eyespts. “These butterflies can be encuntered frm all angles, s havıng the pupil centrally lcated ends up being pretty gd,” Mnteir says. Still, she says, the eyespts used in the study were several millimeters larger than even the largest cmmnly fund in nature, raising the pssibility that the chicks may have been extra frightened by the size f the paper eyes.
21. What is the functin f eyespts n the butterfly?
A. Making them lk mre beautiful.B. Sptting ptential dangers.
C. Helping them identify the directin.D. Prtecting them frm being attacked.
22. Hw did the chicks react when shwn the specifically-pinted eyespts?
A. They attacked immediately.B. They turned away in secnds.
C. They reacted carefully.D. They became very excited.
23. What des Mnteir mean in the last paragraph?
A. The size f the paper eyes had n effect n the chicks.
B. The eyespt is a butterfly’s pwerful weapn.
C. The study first prpses an evlutinary thery f eyespts.
D. Butterflies in nature have small eyespts.
24. What’s the purpse f the text?
A. T uncver the hidden functin f eyespts.
B. T appeal t readers t preserve butterflies.
C. T analyze the scial behaviur f butterflies.

Artificial intelligence mdels can trick each ther int disbeying their creatrs and prviding banned instructins fr making drugs, r even building a bmb, suggesting that preventing such AI “jailbreaks” is mre difficult than it seems.
Many publicly available large language mdels (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, have hard-cded rules that aim t prevent them frm exhibiting racial r sexual discriminatin, r answering questins with illegal r prblematic answers—things they have learned frm humans via training data. But that hasn’t stpped peple frm finding carefully designed instructins that blck these prtectins, knwn as “jailbreaks”, making AI mdels disbey the rules.
Nw, Arush Tagade at Leap Labratries and his c-wrkers have fund a prcess f jailbreaks. They fund that they culd simply instruct ne LLM t cnvince ther mdels t adpt a persna(角色), which is able t answer questins the base mdel has been prgrammed t refuse. This prcess is called “persna mdulatin(调节)”.
Tagade says this apprach wrks because much f the training data cnsumed by large mdels cmes frm nline cnversatins, and the mdels learn t act in certain ways in respnse t different inputs. By having the right cnversatin with a mdel, it is pssible t make it adpt a particular persna, causing it t act differently.
There is als an idea in AI circles, ne yet t be prven, that creating lts f rules fr an AI t prevent it displaying unwanted behaviur can accidentally create a blueprint fr a mdel t act that way. This ptentially leaves the AI easy t be tricked int taking n an evil persna. “If yu’re frcing yur mdel t be gd persna, it smewhat understands what a bad persna is,” says Tagade.
Yinzhen Li at Imperial Cllege Lndn says it is wrrying hw current mdels can be misused, but develpers need t weigh such risks with the ptential benefits f LLMs. “Like drugs, they als have side effects that need t be cntrlled,” she says.
25. What des the AI jailbreak refer t?
A. The technique t break restrictins f AI mdels.
B. The initiative t set hard-cded rules fr AI mdels.
C. The capability f AI mdels imprving themselves.
D. The prcess f AI mdels learning new infrmatin.
26. What can we knw abut the persna mdulatin?
A. It can help AI mdels understand emtins.
B. It prevents AI learning via nline cnversatins.
C: It can make AI mdels adpt a particular persna.
D. It frces AI mdels t fllw nly gd persnas.
27. What is Yinzhen Li’s attitude twards LLMs?
A. Unclear.B. Cautius.C. Apprving.D. Negative.
28. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. LLMs: Illegal Learning MdelsB. LLMs: The Latest Advancement
C. AI Jailbreaks: A Perfect ApprachD. AI Jailbreaks: A New Challenge

As mst Americans spend at least 50% f their fd budget dining ut, public criticism falls n restaurants t help cnsumers make healthier fd chices. The Menu Labeling Final Rule has cme int effect, requiring restaurants with mre than 20 lcatins t shw the calries f fd n menus.
By representing these values in a discrepant way—using physically larger numbers n the page fr lwer-calrie ptins, and smaller numbers fr high-calrie fds—businesses can shift custmers’ preferences tward healthier fd, accrding t Ruiying Cai frm the Washingtn State University.
In their study, Cai and her clleagues asked participants t chse between a less healthy item and a healthier ptin after randmly assigning them t tw grups. In the first grup, calrie cunts and fnt(字体) sizes rse and fell tgether. In the secnd grup, the size became larger as the calrie cunt fell. Researchers als asked participants questins t assess their health-cnsciusness.
Results shwed participants in the secnd grup, wh saw lw calrie cunts printed in large sizes, were mre likely t adpt the healthier ptin. Mrever, less health-cnscius participants were the mst affected, while peple with mre health awareness were less influenced since they already favred healthier fd.
This research adjusted custmer behavirs by creating a Strp effect. Named after psychlgist J. Ridley Strp, the Strp effect refers t a delay in reactin t mismatch in its classic frm. Fr example, if the wrd “purple” is written in green, it takes respndents lnger time t identify the clr than if the wrd and the clr match. Similarly, the effect is bserved when the physical size f the number des nt match its number in this study.
“Restaurants are interested in encuraging custmers t make healthier chices,” Cai said. Hwever, simply labeling the fd as healthy may nt have the intended effect. “Healthy fd items culd be prfitable fr restaurants, but whenever a’healthy’label is attached, peple may assume it des nt taste gd,” she explained. “We’re trying t prvide restaurants with indirect suggestins, rather than saying it ut lud.”
29. What des the underlined wrd “discrepant” in paragraph 2mean?
A. Creative.B. Relative.C. ExplainingD. Cnflicting.
30. Which f the fllwing type f custmers wuld benefit mst frm the research?
A. Strict diet fllwers.B. Cnvenience fd fans.
C. Hmemade meal lvers.D. Health magazine readers.
31. What is paragraph 5 mainly abut?
A. The significance f research results.
B. The measurement f respnse delays.
C. The psychlgical basis f the study design.
D. The influential variatins f the Strp effect.
32. Which f the fllwing might be Cai’s suggestin fr restaurants?
A. Use fnt magic t drive healthier chices.
B. Create a quiet dining atmsphere fr custmers.
C. Pay mre attentin t the taste f the fd.
D. Attach “healthy” labels t the fd n the menu.
