I knw next t nthing abut baseball. When in the right field during P. E. as a by, I prayed the ball wuldn’t cme t me. It tk a miracle(奇迹)fr me t catch it. Yet I later became the father f tw bys, Will and Tim(8 and5), wh were bth interested in baseball. On Saturday mrnings, I’d take Will ut t the playgrund and play catch with him. Thanks t my weak arm, the ball drpped befre he culd catch it. After many misses ne day, he said, “Hw am I ever ging t make the majr leagues?” “Yu gt the wrng dad, kid,” I thught. Baseball isn’t my thing.
Still, I wanted t give my kids cnfidence n the field. There was an fficial Little League in ur area, but it was super-cmpetitive and primarily targeted lder bys. What if we had smething mre lw-key, smething that welcmed bys and girls, and yunger nes?
I shared the idea with sme neighbrs. “That wuld be great!” they said. Nw wh culd rganize such a thing? Nt me. I tried t put the idea aside, but it wuldn’t leave me. I finally decided that I must d smething abut it, S I called the city’s recreatin department, explaining that sme families wanted t start a baseball league in ur neighbrhd. Were there any fields fr that? They bunced me arund. Finally, I spke t the fficial in charge. I gt butterflies in my stmach. What if he said n? “Yes, we have smething fr yu,” the man said, hearing my request. We gt tw fields fr fur hurs every Sunday mrning. Our league was funded. What a jy it was t sit n the benches, watching Will and Tim playing baseball! Hw grateful I was fr ther parents wh did the caching! And I became the mst unlikely baseball cmmissiner(专员)ever.
Many years have passed. Nw Will and Tim are new dads, and I can’t wait t see what they’ll have t d. I knw better than anyne: Parenthd calls yu t d the mst unlikely things.

Is frgiveness against ur human nature? T answer ur questin, we need t ask a further questin: What is the essence f ur humanity? Fr the sake f simplicity, peple cnsider tw distinctly different views f humanity. The first view invlves dminance and pwer. In an early paper n the psychlgy f frgiveness, Drll(1984)made the interesting claim that humans’ essential nature is mre aggressive than frgiving allws. Thse wh frgive are against their basic nature, much t their harm. In his pinin, frgivers are cmprmising their well-being as they ffer mercy t thers, wh might then take advantage f them.
The secnd view invlves the theme f cperatin, mutual respect, and even lve as the basis f wh we are as humans. Researchers find that t fully grw as human beings, we need bth t receive lve frm and ffer lve t thers. Withut lve, ur cnnectins with a wide range f individuals in ur lives can fall apart. Even cmmn sense strngly suggests that the will t pwer ver thers des nt make fr harmnius interactins. Fr example, hw well has slavery wrked as a mde f scial harmny?
Frm this secnd viewpint f wh we are as humans, frgiveness plays a key rle in the bilgical and psychlgical integrity f bth individuals and cmmunities because ne f the utcmes f frgiveness, shwn thrugh scientific studies, is the decreasing f hatred and the restratin f harmny. Frgiveness can break the cycle f anger. At least t the extent the peple frm whm yu are estranged accept yur lve and frgiveness and are prepared t make the required adjustments. Frgiveness can heal relatinships and recnnect peple.
As an imprtant nte, when we take a Classical philsphical perspective, that f Aristtle, we see the distinctin between ptentiality and actuality. We are nt necessarily brn with the capacity t frgive, but instead with the ptential t learn abut it and t grw in ur ability t frgive. The actuality f frgiving, its actual apprpriatin in cnflict situatins, develps with practice.
8.What is Drll’s idea abut frgiveness?
A.Peple shuld ffer mercy t thers.
B.Peple wh frgive can have their wn welfare affected.
    C.Frgiveness depends n the nature f humanity.
D.Aggressive peple shuld learn t frgive.
9.What des the example in Paragraph 2 illustrate?
    A.T frgive is t lve.B.T fight is t grw.
    C.T dminate is t harm.D.T give is t receive.
10.What is the writer’s attitude tward frgiveness?
    A.Objective.B.Reserved.C.Favrable.D.Skeptical.
11.What is message f the last paragraph?
A.Frgiveness is in ur nature.B.Frgiveness grws with time.
    C.Actuality is based n ptentiality.D.It takes practice t frgive.
    D
Minimizing the envirnmental damage that new rads cause is generally regarded as a gd thing. But t d that, it helps t understand just hw new rads cause the damage f which they are accused. Recently, a grup f researchers led by Dr. Gnzalez cnducted an experiment and prved that immigratin is gd fr the health f animal ppulatins. A rad destrys nly a small part f the habitat, thus destrying just a few lcal ppulatin s f creatures. S the argument that rad-building itself is bad fr bidiversity is nt self-evidently crrect. Thse wh nevertheless hld this view say that apparently separate lcal ppulatins f animals are, in fact, parts f much larger ppulatins cnnected via migratin.
Accrding t this thery, when a lcal ppulatin struggles t mve abut —because f an epidemic, fr example — individuals frm neighbring cmmunities can fill the gaps. The implicatins f the thery are straightfrward. Cut lcal ppulatins ff frm each ther and each is mre likely t disappear. And rads are gd at ding just that. Testing the thery with experimental rads, hwever, wuld be expensive. Dr. Gnzalez’s brainwave was t d the whle thing n a much smaller scale.
The team studied mss-cvered rcks. On sme rcks the researchers left the mss untuched; n thers they made “radways” acrss t leave the mss islated. After waiting six mnths, they fund that in the disturbed habitats nearly all the bug ppulatin had declined cmpared with undisturbed mss, and 40% f the species had becme extinct.
The real test came in the secnd part f the experiment. In this, the researchers remved mss much as befre, but they left narrw mss paths t bridge the n-bug’s-land between islands. The islands with bridges did far better than islated islands —a result that supprts the ntin that ppulatin exchange is necessary t keep an ecsystem healthy.
Whether these results can be translated t large-scale ecsystems remains uncertain. But if they can, they wuld cause mre, nt less, cncern abut the eclgical effects f rad-building. On the ther hand, they als suggest a way ut. In Britain, tunnels are ften built under rads fr animals f regular habits, such as badgers(獾), t be able t travel their traditinal rutes withut having t fight with traffic. Extending that principle, perhaps special bridge s might be a cheap way f letting man and nature rub alng a bit better.
12.What’s the main idea f the passage?
A.Calling n us t stp building rads fr a healthy ecsystem.
B.Warning us f ptential dangers f animal immigratin.
C.Infrming us f the envirnmental damage caused by new rads.
D.Suggesting a new way t avid the damage caused by new rads.
    13.Dr. Gnzalez’s experiment fund that ______.
    A.building rads is expensive
    B.immigratin is gd fr animals
    C.rads cut ff animal immigratin
D.tunnels shuld be built under rads
14.Hw des the authr present his pint?
    A.By analyzing facts.B.By giving examples.
C.By prviding scientific findings.D.By cmparing pssible effects.
15.Accrding t the passage, which f the fllwing statements will the writer agree with?
A.The impact f rad-building is nt as serius as we thught.
B.Rad-building is beneficial t animal immigratin.
C.Envirnmental damage caused by rad-building is still uncertain.
D.Envirnmental damage caused by rad-building might be lessened.

Wh can imagine life tday withut an Autmated Teller Machine(ATM)? They are available in cnsiderable numbers thrughut the wrld.
The first ATM was the brainchild f an enterprising Turkish-American inventr Luther Gerge Simjian. When the idea f an autmated banking machine struck him, he registered 20 patents befre any bank agreed t give it a trial run. It is easy t assume that the inventr f such a ppular machine was laughing all the way t the bank.16.______ Within six mnths f its peratin in New Yrk in 1939, the device was remved due t lack f custmer acceptance.
It was nt until 1967, nearly 30 years later, that Barclays Bank, in a careful launch, rlled ut a self-service machine in Lndn, England, which prved successful.17.______ The first cash machine relied n custmers’ use f prepaid tkens(代币)t get envelpes with a fixed amunt f cash inside.
18.______ The banks’ principle was seemingly custmer service. But it wuld be flish t minimize the many advantages that cash machines prvided t the banks themselves. By the late 1970s, the highest fixed cst fr the average large bank was its branches. The greatest variable cst and lss t prfits were its staff. Ban k accunts swiftly recgnized that self-service peratins culd reduce bank branch staff cst by70 percent.
Experts quickly determined that public acceptance f ATMs cunted n cnvenience, simplicity, speed, security and trust. 19.______ Fr maximum efficiency, ATMs had t be lcated near public transprt r in a shpping mall, nt at a branch. The busier and mre crwded the lcatin, bviusly, the better. Nw, rughly 75percent f all cash prvided by banks t their custmers cmes frm cash machines.20.______.
Public acceptance f depsits(存款)by machine was significantly slwer than custmers’ usage f ATMs fr withdrawals. In general, it seems that custmers smetimes still prefer and trust an ver-the-cunter transactin(交易)fr depsits.
A.Lcatin, in particular, was a key factr.
B.His cash machine, hwever, didn’t prve durable.
C.The device was relatively primitive, at least by tday’s standards.
D.Hwever, cash machines psed sme interesting, unanswered questins.
E.An interesting factr was the issue f bi-statistics fr custmer identificatin.
F.Devices riginally dismissed by the public are nw recgnized as essential institutins.
G.Sn afterwards, many ther banks became admittedly champins f the cash machine.
