SALT LAKE CITY, Utah —Drive west f this high desert city, and it’s like entering anther wrld. Or maybe better put, anther wrldly landscape: the vast, and drying wetlands alng the Great Salt Lake, the largest salt lake left in the western hemisphere (西半球), sme fifty miles lng and thirty wide.
Carly Biedul is part f a team f scientists wh have been tracking the lake’s decline amid the West’s recrd drught, which is made wrse by climate change. They’ve been cnducting weekly trips t varius sampling and study sites fr the last several years at the remte lake that nly recently started making internatinal headlines due t its sharp decline. Scientists warn the lake has already shrunk (缩减) nearly in half frm its histrical average. “Fr these birds that queue int these salty habitats, there are fewer places fr them t g.” Says Heidi Hven, a wetlands eclgist.
Scientists say the West is believed t be as dry as it’s been in 1,200 years. The recrd drught has been cntributing t the Great Salt Lake’s decline.
