nvel is a great achievement f magical realism. This great success was fllwed by his anther nvel Shame (1983).
A Christmas Carl by Charles Dickens
If yu’re nt familiar with Dickens, his evergreen Christmastime classic is the perfect intrductin. It’s a slim 104-page bk—a true Christmas
surprise frm an authr with a tendency twards the tme (大部头书) like his Great Expectatins, which is anther classic! It’s the perfect bk fr yu
t read in winter just when yu want t feel that warm hliday atmsphere.
The Heart Is a Lnely Hunter by Carsn McCullers

12.I am an eclgist frm Zimbabwe, but I’ve been based at the Natinal University f Lesth in Maseru fr mre than 13 years. Lesth is a
muntainus inland kingdm in suthern Africa. Its high-altitude (高海拔的) wetlands supprt the Lesth Highlands Water Prject, which delivers water
t the Vaal River System in Suth Africa, generating bth incme and electricity fr Lesth.
I study the eclgical balance that keeps thse areas functining prperly: The wetlands t rap water when it rains and release it gradually during dry
perids. An imprtant part f this is t map the plants, animals and general envirnmental cnditins, and hw they change ver time.
One f ur team prjects mnitrs the sundscapes f thse areas t identify the animals that live there. We put sensitive recrding equipment in
the field fr weeks at a time. This is f great help because, althugh that site is just 180 kilmeters frm my university in the capital f Lesth, it can
take up t fur hurs t drive there.
The data we gather are huge, and althugh we d listen t the recrdings, we mainly use sftware t help us analyze the data. We want t cmpare
ur recrdings between seasns, between dawn and dusk (晨昏) and between day and night, t understand the rhythms f the ecsystem. We als
cmpare ur recrdings frm different wetland types. High-altitude areas are easier t be affected by climate change and, in my view, it is the greatest
    threat thse prtected wetlands face.
Listening t the recrdings makes me happy because I enjy hearing a variety f sunds, especially the singing f different birds. In a small cuntry
like Lesth, there are s many knwledge gaps t fill—it’s ne f the benefits f being a researcher there. I hpe that in the future sme f yu in this
classrm will cntribute t this as well.

send data t the rbt’s “brain”. These sensatins are then cpied n a suit and VR headset wrn by a remte human peratr.
When the peratr reacts t what they see and feel, the suit’s sensrs pick up the mvements and the rbt matches them. “The key is t
translate every signal and bit f numeric data that can be sent thrugh the netwrk,” says Stefan Dafarra, wh is part f the iCub 3 team. There can be
a small delay f up t 100 millisecnds t cllect and transmit the visual ftage, but the peratr can imprve this by mving slightly slwer than
    nrmal.
The team has demnstrated the rbt at the Venice Biennale, where it wandered thrugh an exhibitin while its peratr std 290 kilmeters away
    in Gena.
Dafarra hpes peple will use iCub 3 t attend events remtely, reducing the need t travel. “But at present, a fall culd be hugely damaging t the
rbt, and it’s uncertain whether it culd stand up again n its wn,” he says.
“iCub 3 is an interesting rbt and has clear advantages ver the previus versin,” says Jnathan Aitken, whse labratry wns a prir versin f
the rbt. Hwever, he is disappinted that the team wasn’t clear in its research abut the data transmissin requirements f the new versin f the

This bservatin gave rise t new questins: What are they ding? Why? Is this randm r intentinal?
T answer these questins, the researchers set up mre experiments. In the latest experiment, they watched 45 bumblebees in an enclsed area
where they culd walk thrugh a clear path t reach a feeding area, r they culd g ff the path int areas with wden balls. They fund the
bumblebees went ut f their way t sit n the balls r push them. Each rlled the balls between ne and 117 times during the experiment.
The researchers say that because they did it repeatedly with n fd payff, it suggests that the ball rlling was rewarding.
“The behavir was vluntary,” says study first-authr Samadi Galpayage. “Bees have a reputatin fr being hard wrkers, but the prspect f bees
engaging in smething like play is really nvel and exciting because it shws that bees may experience pleasure and dn’t nly carry ut duties that are
    strictly essential fr immediate survival.”
Galpayage adds, “Persnally, I find this behavir fascinating because it tells us that bumblebees, like many ther animals, are mre than little
