Tday, pen bk-review pages, and yu are mre likely t see writers describing each ther and their wrk with such wrds as “brilliant” and “insightful” rather than, as they nce did, “tiresme”. An editr fr BuzzFeed, a news site, even annunced that its bks sectin wuld nt d negative bk reviews at all. This was wnderful news fr writers everywhere. It was nt such gd news fr readers.
The best bad reviews are scalpel (手术刀) jbs, bserves the British critic Adam Mars-Jnes,“ because if it’s nt precise, it’s nt ging t wrk.” One f the finest was used by Gerge Elit n Charltte Brnte’s “Jane Eyre”. “I wish,” Elit wrte.“ the characters wuld talk a little less like the heres and herines f plice reprts.” Mdem reviewers rarely achieve such deadly beauty. All t ften reviews are full f filler wrds: “darkly funny”, “deep thinking”. Many f these imply the wrd “bring”, which is in effect frbidden n literary pages.
The Internet is ne reasn fr this sftening. It has changed bth the ecnmics f criticism(newspapers have fewer bk pages, s editrs tend t fill them with the bks yu shuld read, nt the nes yu shuld nt) and the advisability f it. The Internet has als helped decrease annymity (匿名). Once, mst reviews were annymus. Tday, mst reviewers are nt nly named but easily searchable. Whereas 30 years ag, critics were “encuraged t really have a g at peple”, nw peple are ‘terrified f giving public criticism’’.
There have been attempts t bring back sharp criticism. In 2012 an award called the “Hatchet Jb f the Year” was launched by tw critics as a “missin against bredm and lazy thinking”. It ran fr three years. Fleur Macdnald, ne f its c-funders, thinks that “the literary scene prbably needs it mre than ver nw”, but that it struggled t get spnsrship since “bad bk review s can cause disagreements”.

11. What can we learn abut the “Hatchet Jb f the Year”?
A. It inspired many critics.B. It became an instant hit.

Can a machine predict the sng f the summer? Can it remve frgettable flps (失败之作)? If s, such a technlgy culd reduce music prductin csts and even make judges n televisin talent shws utdated-but after decades f “hit sng science” research, predicting a successful sng is still mre f an art than a science.
Nw researchers at Claremnt Graduate University say they’ve fund a way t use artificial intelligence t predict the next chart-tpping sng. The team tracked hw participants respnded as they listened t music. A machine-learning mdel trained n the data was then able t determine whether a sng was a hit r a flp with 97 percent accuracy.
Traditinally, music industry experts lking t predict the next hit have relied n large databases t analyze the lyrical and acustic (原音的) aspects f hit sngs. But this methd has perfrmed nly slightly better than a randm cin tss (投掷). Fr example, Hda Khalil, a data scientist. and her wrkmates have analyzed data frm mre than 600,000 sngs and fund n significant cnnectins between varius acustic features and a tune’s cmmercial ppularity.
Rather than fcusing n a sng’s qualities, the Claremnt team sught t explre hw humans respnd t music. “Sngs are designed t create an emtinal experience fr peple, and thse emtins cme frm the brain, ”says Paul Zak, senir authr f the new study.
Previus attempts t use brain scans t predict hit sngs had limited success. Instead f directly measuring the brain, Zak’s team equipped 33 participants with wearable sensrs that mnitr changes in their heart bld flw, similar t the way traditinal smartwatches and fitness trackers detect heart rate.
Participants listened t 24 sngs ranging frm the hit “Dance Mnkey” t the cmmercial flp “Dekari”. Their data were then fed thrugh the cmmercial platfrm Immersin Neurscience (沉浸式神经科学), c-funded by Zak. An AI mdel trained n these immersin signals predicted hit sngs with high accuracy, the researchers reprted. Hwever, nt everyne is cnvinced. “The study depends n the neurphysilgical measure f immersin, but this measure needs further scientific study,” says Stefan Kelsch, a neurscientist at the University f Bergen in Nrway.
12. What is the pssible result f the predicting technlgy?
A. The big rise in music prductin csts.B. The dramatic decrease in hit sngs.
C. The declining ppularity f talent shws.D. The unemplyment f TV prgram judges.
13. What can we say abut the traditinal predicting methd?
A. It invlves little analysis.B. It presents lw accuracy.
C. It was inspired by cin tssing.D. It was applied t cmpsing sngs.
14. Hw was the new study cnducted?
A. By inviting participants t finish questinnaires.B. By equipping participants with smartwatches.
C. By scannıng participants’ brain activities.D. By tracing participants’ heart bld flw.
15. What is Stefan Kelsch’s attitude twards the research?
A. Objective.B. Indifferent.C. Favrable.D. Disapprving.
