With his sn nearby, Gelinne fcused n keeping the pilt calm, jking, “Just hang n t the bat as if yu were hugging yur wife.” The pilt grabbed the kayak’s bw. Nw the three men were flating tgether. By nw, a plice fficer had arrived and radied fr help. A bat frm the Maryland Department f Natural Resurces appeared, breaking thrugh ice as it arrived. It picked up the pilt, Steve Cuchman, 71, and sent him t be treated fr minr injuries. Later the bat returned t help Gelinne, nw exhausted t shre while Jhn Jr. made his wn way back.

At a distance, by examining psture, way f walking, arms wing, clthing, and equipment, ur ancestrs culd discern friend frm fe (敌人).
As generatins evlved and eventually mved t cities clseness changed hw we viewed and assessed each ther. Because everyne was s clse, we had less time t bserve. Clse quarters and circumstances demanded we interact n first meeting rather than later. This was the ppsite f what we had dne fr thusands f years, which was t assess first at a distance and then interact. Clseness als made us mre sensitive t being bserved, which is why we are uncmfrtable when thers stare at us.
Have we allwed urselves t becme careless when it cmes t ur wn safety and that f ur lved nes? I see peple distracted while driving (applying makeup r texting). Or smene kncks at the frnt dr and we pen it withut first seeing wh is there and asking what they want Perhaps, in an attempt t be plite, we have ended ur respnsibility t urselves, and each ther, t be gd bservers.
We shuld all lk arund and listen t ur inner vice, which is in fact the limbic (边缘的) brain telling us t be careful that smething is wrng, as security special it Gavin de Becker pinted ut in The Gift f Fear, S ften, after an encunter r a relatinship turns prblematic, ne hears, “Yu knw I had a feeling, in the beginning, that smething wasn’t right.
Hwever failure t bserve, if we are hnest, leads t avidable circumstances as well as accidents, Hw we feel abut smething ften cmpletes the picture s that we can fully understand it Anyway, it is never t late t start bserving. Observatin is nt abut being judgmental, it is nt abut gd r bad. It is abut seeing the wrld arund yu, having situatinal awareness, and interpreting what it is that thers are cmmunicatin bth verbally and nnverbally. T bserve is t see but als t understand, and that requires listening t hw yu feel.
    28. What des the underlined wrd “discern” in paragraph 1 mean?

    【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Perhaps, in an attempt t be plite, we have ended ur respnsibility t urselves, and each ther, t be gd bservers.(也许,为了表示礼貌,我们放弃了对自己和他人作为优秀观察者的责任。)”可知,我们放弃成为好的观察者可能是为了避免粗鲁。故选B。

This bk is abut rediscvering the jy in yur wn talents and finding magic in the rdinary.
    One Thusand and One Nights
I wn a cpy f this bk in a cmpetitin at schl. It’s kind f the ppsite f finding the magic in the rdinary—it’s abut extravagance and amazing ness, bragging and lying. But I lve it! It’s really abut hw strytelling can save yur life. The narratr is a wman facing a death sentence wh is tell ng stries with these cli hangers (悬念) s she wn’t be killed. It’s a bk f wnders abut hw yu can enchant (使入迷) smene with a stry. As children’s writer, yu spend a lt f time in schls, telling stries t children wh dn’t necessarily want t be there, gathering them up in a mment f laughter, excitement r nervusness. One Thusand and One Nights celebrates that yu can cnfrnt smene wh wants t kill yu and, because f a cliffhanger they g, “I’ll kill yu tmrrw instead”. It’s the greatest celebratin f the pwer f strytelling I can think f.
Three Men in a Bat, Jerme K Jerme
This is just the funniest bk. And it’s kind f abut nthing. It’s just three blkes in a bat ging dwn the Thames and nt being very gd at it. That’s all. It’s just paying attentin t the lvely details f rdinary life. It’s s kind, s tender, and it’s funnier than anything else. There are pages and pages f failing t get thrugh a lck gate r getting lst in amaze. Yu dn’t need all these big twists and dramatic events t be funny, yu can just be really vercnfident that yu can find yur way ut f amaze!
