Brn in France in 1802, Victr Hug was a nvelist, pet and playwright and was part f the Rmantic Mvement. Regarded as ne f France’s greatest writers, he is celebrated as the “Shakespeare f France”.Hug first fund fame, as a pet, when he was abut 20 years ld. Less than ten years later, he published ne f his best-knwn wrks, The Hunchback f Ntre-Dame. It was immediately a huge success and is nw cnsidered a key wrk f Rmanticism. It remains ne f his mst ppular wrks tday.

Rmanticism is a literary, artistic, and philsphical mvement riginating in the 18th century, characterized chiefly by a reactin against neclassicism and an emphasis n the imaginatin and emtins, and marked especially in English literature by sensibility and the use f autbigraphical material, an exaltatin f the primitive and the cmmn man, an appreciatin f external nature, an interest in the remte, a predilectin fr melanchly, and the use in petry f lder verse frms.
The Hunchback f Ntre-Dame
The main characters
Esmeralda is the perfect artistic image f truth, kindness and beauty created by Hug. She was stlen frm her prstitute mther by a gypsy when she was a child. After that, she lived as a vagabnd and busked fr a living. Despite all the hardships and sufferings in the wrld, she still kept a kind, pure and helpful heart.
Quasimd was a typical example f the pr peple f his time. He was abandned by his parents at the gate f Ntre Dame DE Paris. He was a defrmed child with a "gemetric face, a tetrahedral nse, a muth shaped like a hrseshe, jagged teeth, ne-eyed, a crked ear, and an ugly and hnest vice." His character was highlighted by his exaggerated appearance.
Archdeacn Claude was a cmplex man, a man f great knwledge and strange character, hateful as well as pitiable.
