1. What is the difference between the verbs in red in sentences (a) and (b) ?
“Carpeted” in sentence (a) is a past participle used as cmplement and “flattening” in sentence (c) is a present participle used as cmplement.
2. In sentence (b), des “t find” indicate purpse r result?
In sentence (b), “t find” indicates result.
3. In sentence (d), des “t watch” indicate purpse r result? What is the functin f “falling”?
In sentence (d), “t watch” indicates purpse; “falling” is an attributive used t describe the snw.

1. 非谓语动词作定语1) 不定式作定语 a. 作定语的不定式与它所修饰的名词或代词在逻辑上可能是主谓关系,也可能是动宾关系。如: The next train t arrive was frm New Yrk. It was a game t remember. b. 名词前有nly, last, next,序数词或形容词最高级时,其后常用不定式作定语。如: Rita was the nly persn t cmplain. He was the first man t fly acrss the Atlantic. Alex is the best man t d the jb.
c. 有些名词的同根动词后常跟不定式,因而这些名词后也常跟不定式作定语。如: Their ffer t assist in the wrk was nt taken seriusly.2) 动词-ing形式作定语可表示正在进行的动作,也可表示经常发生的或短暂的动作以及经常存在的状态。如: The wman sending her children t schl is my histry teacher. A little child learning t walk ften falls.3) 过去分词作定语常表示被动或已经发生的动作。如: We’ve met the dctrs sent t wrk here by the city hspital.
2. 非谓语动词作状语1) 不定式作状语,常表示目的、原因、结果等。不定式作结果状语时,常用于“nly +不定式”结构,表示未曾预料到的或令人不快的结果。如: A friend f mine came t see me tnight. I jumped with jy t hear it. Alan lifted a rck nly t drp it n his wn feet.
2) 动词-ing形式或过去分词作状语时,可以表示时间、原因、结果、条件、让步、方式、伴随情况等,其前可加连词while, when, nce, if, unless等。如: Crssing the street, he was kncked dwn by a car. Frightened by the nise utside, the little girl dared nt sleep in her bedrm. He fell ff the bike, breaking his left leg. Seen thrugh the eyes f a yung friend, Einstein was a simple, mdest and rdinary man. A grup f children were sitting arund the teacher, playing games. When heated, ice will be changed int water.
3. 非谓语动词作补语 1) 动词-ing形式表示正在进行的活动或反复的动作,而不定式则表示整个活动或事件的全过程。如: I see him passing my huse every day. I asked Gerge t cnvey my best wishes t his mther.
2) 感官动词和使役动词后常接省略t的不定式作宾语补足语,但用于被动语态时,需把t补出来。如: Smene saw Mary enter the building abut the time the crime was cmmitted. Mary was seen t enter the building abut the time the crime was cmmitted. 另外,感官动词后也可接动词-ing形式作补语,表示动作正在进行。如: Once in the middle f the night I wke and heard the wind blwing.

Tday, whilst walking alng a peaceful river running thrugh a university campus,
I was amazed t find it is a beautiful public place t walk, picnic, relax and enjy the view f the river. On bth banks f the river, there are tw walking paths ging alng the river. There are als several lng shady spts that make it perfect fr a spring strll.If yu pause lng enugh here, yu’ll undubtedly see sme flwers falling frm the peach trees and the willw branches swaying in the wind.It’s really an unusual sight in an urban area.
