    Describing nature
    1. What des this paragraph mainly describe?
This paragraph mainly describes the beautiful appearance in the mnth f August.
    2. What aspects des the authr describe?
The authr describes the skies, fields, flwers, rchards, trees, what and the quality f the light.
Put the wrds in Activity 5 int the bxes. Find ut what they are used t describe.
    clear, green, rich, glden
blming, bend, bw, piled, waving, sweeps, tinges, makes
    fresh, sweet-smelling
    fresh, bleak, gentle, sft, pleasant
    thick clusters, graceful sheaves
Nw think f mre wrds in each categry and add them t the bxes. Then describe nature during yur favrite seasn with the wrds yu have learnt.
D yu knw the bk Landmarks by Rbert Macfarlane?
Wrds are grained int ur landscapes, and landscapes are grained int ur wrds. Landmarks is abut the pwer f language t shape ur sense f place.
It is a field guide t the literature f nature, and a glssary cntaining thusands f remarkable wrds used in England, Sctland, Ireland and Wales t describe land, nature and weather. Travelling frm Cumbria t the Cairngrms, and explring the landscapes f Rger Deakin, J. A. Baker, Nan Shepherd and thers, Rbert Macfarlane shws that language, well used, is a keen way f knwing landscape, and a vital means f cming t lve it.
Open a dictinary, and yu’ll be surprised t find that there are many mre wrds abut nature than yu wuld think. There are varius ways t describe the things we see in the natural wrld, n matter whether it’s a flwer, an animal r the rain. Fr example, there are many ways t describe the different sunds f birds, such as chatter, chirp, cluck, ht and tweet. These wrds can help us t write vivid descriptins f nature.
Listen t the cnversatin and answer the questins.
    1. What bk was the man reading?
The man was reading a bk called Landmarks.
    2. Why was the man annyed?
We’re lsing ld wrds all the time.
    3. What was the girl’s pinin?
    Times change.
Years ag, nature writer extrardinaire Rbert Macfarlane discvered that the latest editin f the Oxfrd Junir Dictinary was missing a few things. Oxfrd University Press cnfirmed that indeed, a list f wrds had been remved; wrds that the publisher felt were n lnger relevant t a mdern-day childhd. S gdbye t acrn, adder, ash, and beech. Farewell t bluebell, buttercup, catkin, and cnker. Adis cwslip, cygnet, dandelin, fern, hazel, and heather.
N mre hern, ivy, kingfisher, lark, mistlete, nectar, newt, tter, pasture and willw. And in their place came the new kids n the blck, wrds like blg, bradband, bullet-pint, celebrity, chatrm, cmmittee, cut-and-paste, MP3 player and vice-mail.
Listen t the cnversatin again and crrect the mistakes in the man’s blg.
Recently I was reading a bk called Landmarks by Rbert Macfarlane. What the authr wrte made me feel cnfused.
He said that many wrds describing nature were being added t the new versin f the junir dictinary. These are wrds like “pasture” and “bluebell”. A “pasture” is a dense frest fr cws and hrses t eat. “Bluebells” are fruit shaped like bells.
    nw missing frm
    field f grass
    blue flwers
The reasn why they are ding this is that they think these wrds are irrelevant t children, s instead they’ve replaced them with terms like “film”. Perhaps the dictinary des have a pint, because mst children dn’t get ut int nature that much nwadays.
They spend all their time watching TV instead. But it’s a pity. in my pinin, these wrds frm part f ur literature. They add clur t ur lives, and shuldn’t be lst. My granddaughter has the same pinin as me.
    a different pinin frm
She says we are lsing ld wrds all the time. And as times change, ld wrds becme as nrmal t yung peple as the new nes are t me.
new wrds becme as nrmal t yung peple as the ld nes are t me.
Nw wrk in pairs and act ut the cnversatin.
Cmplete the bxes with the expressins frm the cnversatin.
    … such as …
    The main reasn

    Tw reasns, I think.
    Giving examples
    Giving explanatins
    …, fr instance.
    The main reasn …
Talk abut yur pinins f the issue discussed in Activity 8 using the expressins in this sectin.
In my pinin, which wrds shuld be added t a dictinary depends n the dictinary editrs. The main reasn is that the dictinary editrs study the language as it's used. They carefully mnitr which wrds peple use mst ften and hw they use them.
Fr instance, each day mst Merriam-Webster editrs devte an hur r tw t reading a crss sectin f published material, including bks, newspapers, magazines, and electrnic publicatins. The editrs scur the texts in search f new wrds, new usages f existing wrds, variant spellings, and inflected frms–in shrt, anything that might help in deciding if a wrd belngs in the dictinary, understanding what it means, and determining typical usage. Any wrd f interest is marked, alng with surrunding cntext that ffers insight int its frm and use. S it’s n use fr rdinary peple in talking abut this issue.
Nw think abut yur perfrmance. Have yu actively participated in the discussin? What can yu d t imprve yur perfrmance?
