    We experience different frms f the Sun’s energy every day. We can see its light and feel its warmth. The Sun is the majr surce f evapratin f water frm the ceans and lakes. Sunlight als prvides the energy used by green plants t make their wn fd. These green plants then prvide fd fr all rganisms n the Earth.
    Much f the energy that cmes frm the Sun never reaches the Earth’s surface. It is either reflected r absrbed by the gases in the upper atmsphere. Of the energy that reaches the lwer atmsphere, 30% is reflected by cluds r the Earth’s surface. The remaining 70% warms the surface f the planet, causes water t evaprate, and prvides energy fr the water cycle and weather. Only a tiny part, apprximately 0.023%, is actually used by green plants t prduce fd.
    Many gases fund in the atmsphere actually reflect heat energy escaping frm the Earth’s surface back t the Earth. These gases act like the glass f a greenhuse in that they allw energy frm the Sun t enter but prevent energy frm leaving. They are therefre called greenhuse gases.
