The new Wakatbi sunbird lks similar t the live-backed sunbird, but has darker feathers, shrter wings, and a higher-tned sng. Zlgists believe that because it has such shrt wings, it never spread beynd the tiny islands. The live-backed sunbird, hwever, can fly lng distances, s it was able t live in ther lcatins.
“Specifically, we became interested in the Wakatbi sunbird because f the wrk f ErnstHartert, a German bird expert active at the beginning f the 20th century,” Finn Marcaigh, ne researcher, says. “He described the Wakatbi sunbird as a ppulatin with unique dark feathers, but he and the rest f the scientific cmmunity finally decided that it was nly a subspecies f the widespread live-backed sunbird.
