The Giving Vice Chrus (合唱团) was created in 2014 by Mary Lenard, a frmer directr f the Alzheimer’s Assciatin f Minnesta-Nrth Dakta. With c-wrker Marge Ostrushk, wh has taken care f a parent with Alzheimer’s disease(AD), a brain disrder that gets wrse ver time, Lenard set ut t create an envirnment where peple with AD and their caregivers felt supprted and cmfrtable.
“Peple with AD smetimes withdraw and ften are nt included in the cmmunity,” she says. “Marge and I recgnized that music and singing are ways fr peple with AD t still be included and jin in life.”
In the beginning, the chrus was made up f 30 peple, including vlunteers frm the cmmunity wh helped with small tasks during chrus practice, such as helping singers find the printed music in their binders (活页夹) if they lst their place. Since then, the Giving Vice Chrus has grwn t tw additinal chruses, with mre than 180 members verall.
“We dn’t d auditins, and we dn’t care what AD cases yu have r the stage f yur disease,” says Lenard. “As lng as yu enjy the experience, anyne can be part f the grup. It’s a place where everyne belngs.”
Lenard says, “When we first started ut, Marge and I didn’t knw if peple with AD were ging t mve away frm the place where they ught t be r get upset.” But the ppsite has happened. “There’s a psitive change we see in peple when they’re singing sngs they lve. They’re smiling, and there’s jy and laughter. It’s really special.”
“Peple with AD might have difficulty learning a new sng r cming up with wrds n their wn,” says Dr. Caselli, AD specialist at May Clinic in Scttsdale. “But if they hear a sng they’ve knwn all their lives, they tend t remember the wrds and are able t sing alng. And because speech and lng-term memry aren’t usually affected until late in the disease, members f the Giving Vice Chrus are likely t stay active until the last few mnths f life.”
