One mment it was quiet and calm in the frest, the next, the air was charged with tensin. The elephant had heard the distant alarm calls f animals and her md suddenly changed. I urged the elephant deeper int the frest. We sunded like a frest fire~crackling, snapping, trailblazing. But thrugh all the nise came a sharp warning cry. The elephant stpped and we heard it again一the tell-tale call f a sptted deer.
I lked quickly arund the shadws f the frest. Rays f sunlight shne thrugh tree branches, beneath which the patchwrk (交错)f green plants and shadws-within-shadws wuld make tiger stripes (条纹)lk mre attractive. Apart frm an ccasinal nise frm the elephant’s stmach, the frest was silent.
Gradually, the tensin slipped frm ur bdies. The elephant seized a nearby branch and put it int her muth. I reached frward and gently mved my hand ver the elephant’s neck; there was a sft part, free f wrinkles and hairs, behind her ear.
This was my furth time t sense the aura f the frest in Crbett, althugh I saw n tigers in the end. Lcated at the ft f the Himalayan muntains, Crbett is hme t abut 135 Bengal tigers, but the frest seemed t be guarding their whereabuts (出没处),a silent reminder f their secrecy and rarity. It’s generally believed that peple act the way they d because f their persnalities and attitudes. They recycle their garbage because they care abut the envirnment. They pay S5 fr a caramel brul6e latte because they like expensive cffee drinks.
It’s undeniable that behavir cmes frm ur inner dispsitins (性情),but in many instances we als draw inferences abut wh we are, as suggested by the scial psychlgist Daryl Bern, by bserving ur wn behavir. We can be strangers t urselves. If we knew ur wn minds, why wuld we need t guess what ur preferences are frm ur behavir? If ur minds were an pen bk, we wuld knw exactly hw much we care abut the envirnment r like lattes. Actually,we ften need t lk t ur behavir t figure ut wh we are.
Mrever, we dn’t just use ur behavir t learn abut ur particular types f character~we infer characters that weren’t there befre. Our behavir is ften shaped by little pressures arund us, which we fail t recgnize. Maybe we recycle because ur wives and neighbrs wuld disapprve if we didn't. Maybe we buy lattes in rder t impress the peple arund us. We shuld nt mistakenly believe that we always behave as a result f sme inner dispsitin.
Whatever pressures there can be r inferences ne can make, peple becme what they d, thugh it may nt be in cmpliance (符合)with their true desires. Therefre, we shuld all bear in mind Kurt Vnnegufs advice: “We are what we pretend t be, s we must be careful abut what we pretend t be. ’’

    第四篇
One afternn last week, I saw three tearful children frm my sn’s schl being cmfrted by teachers. That mrning, my 11-year-ld had stmach pains, retchingint a bwl. Talking t ther mthers later, I heard abut ther children with stmachache r difficult sleeping the night befre.
What caused s much pain? Sprts day. Sprts day might be necessary at a highly-cmpetitive independent schl, but nt at a village primary schl. Fr the children wh can fly like the wind, sprts day cause n prblem. Fr thse wh are verweight r just nt gd at sprt, it is
Nightmare.ven fr thse wh enjy running but fall halfway dwn the track in frnt f the entire schl and their parents, it can prve a disease.
Why d we put ur children thrugh this annual suffering? Sme may say cmpetitin is character building; r it’s taking part, nt winning, that’s imprtant; r that’s a traditin f schl life. I just felt great pity fr thse children in tears r in pain.
Team games at the end f sprts day prduced sme clse races, wild enthusiasm, lts f shuting — and were fun t watch. Mre imprtantly, the children wh were nt s fast r quick at passing the ball were hidden a little frm everyne’s eyes. Sme f them als had the thrill f being n the winning side.
I wish that sprts day culd be abandned and replaced with sme ther less cmpetitive event. Perhaps an afternn f team games, with a few races fr thse wh want them, wuld be less stressful fr the children and a lt mre fun t watch.
57.What can we learn abut the authr’s sn frm Paragraph 1?
A.He talked with sme mthers. B.He cmfrted his classmates.
C.He had difficulty in sleeping. D.Hesuffered frm stmachache.

B.They are acceptable t different children.
C.They shuld be abandned at primary schl.
D.They are less fun fr thse wh lve running.
    60. What is the authr’s attitude twards sprts day?
    A.Critical. B.Neutral.
