Skeptics are a strange lt. Sme f them refuse t admit the serius threat f human activities t the envirnment, and they are tired f peple wh disagree with them. Thse peple, say skeptics, spread nthing but bad news abut the envirnment. The “ec-guilt” brught n by the discuraging news abut ur planet gives rise t the ppularity f skeptics as peple search fr mre cmfrting wrldviews.
Perhaps that explains why a new bk by Bjrn Lmbrg received s much publicity. That bk, The Skeptical Envirnmentalist, declares that it measures the “real state f the wrld” as fine. Of curse, anther explanatin is the deep pckets f sme big businesses with special interests. Indeed, Mr. Lmbrg’s views are similar t thse f sme industry-funded rganizatins, which start huge activities thrugh the media t cnfuse the public abut issues like glbal warming.
S it was strange t see Mr. Lmbrg’s bk g largely unchallenged in the media thugh his beliefs were cntrary t mst scientific pinins. One natinal newspaper in Canada ran a number f articles and reviews full f wrds f praise, even with the cnclusin that “After Lmbrg, the envirnmental mvement will begin t die dwn.”
Such ne-sided views shuld have immediately been challenged. But nly a different review appeared in Nature, a respected science magazine with specific readership. The review remarked that Mr. Lmbrg’s “preference fr unexamined materials is incredible (不可信的)”.
A critical (批判的) eye is valuable, and the media shuld present infrmatin in such a way that culd allw peple t make infrmed decisins. Unfrtunately, that is ften inaccessible as blcked by the desire t be shcking r t defend sme special interests. Peple might becme half-blind befre a wrld partially exhibited by the media. That’s a shame, because matters cncerning the health f the planet are far t imprtant t be treated lightly.
1. Accrding t the passage, which f the fllwing may be regarded as “skeptics” ?
A. Peple wh agree n the ppularity f“ec-guilt”.
B. Peple wh disbelieve the serius situatin f ur planet.
C. Peple wh dislike the harmful effect f human activities.

B. The bk challenges views abut the fine state f the wrld.
C. The authr cnvinces peple t seek cmfrting wrldviews.
D. Industry-funded media present cnfusing infrmatin.
3. The authr mentined the review in Nature in rder t .
A. vice a different pinin
B. find fault with Lmbrg’s bk
C. challenge the authrity f the media
D. pint ut the value f scientific views
4. What is the authr’s main purpse in writing the passage?
A. T encurage the skeptics t have a critical eye.
B. T warn the public f the danger f half-blindness with reviews.
C. T blame the media’s lack f respnsibility in presenting infrmatin.

In business, there’s a speed difference: It’s the difference between hw imprtant a firm’s leaders say speed is t their cmpetitive(竞争的) strategy(策略) and hw fast the cmpany actually mves. The difference is imprtant regardless f industry and cmpany size. Cmpanies fearful f lsing their cmpetitive advantage spend much time and mney lking fr ways t pick up the speed.
In ur study f 343 businesses, the cmpanies that chse t g, g, g t try t gain an edge ended up with lwer sales and perating incmes than thse that paused at key mments t make sure they were n the right track. What’s mre, the firms that“slwed dwn t speed up” imprved their tp and bttm lines, averaging 40% higher sales and 52% higher perating incmes ver a three-year perid.
Hw did they disbey the laws f business physics, taking mre time than cmpetitrs yet perfrming better? They thught differently abut what“slwer” and“faster” mean. Firms smetimes fail t understand the difference between peratinal speed(mving quickly)and strategic speed(reducing the time it takes t deliver value). Simply increasing the speed f prductin, fr example, may be ne way t try t reduce the speed difference. But that ften leads t reduced value ver time, in the frm f lwer-quality prducts and services.
In ur study, higher-perfrming cmpanies with strategic speed always made changes when necessary. They became mre pen t ideas and discussin. They encuraged new ways f thinking. And they allwed time t lk back and learn. By cntrast(相比而言), perfrmance suffered at firms that mved fast all the time, paid t much attentin t imprving efficiency, stuck t tested methds, didn’t develp team spirit amng their emplyees, and had little time thinking abut changes.
Strategic speed serves as a kind f leadership. Teams that regularly take time t get things right, rather than plugh ahead full bre, are mre successful in meeting their business gals. That kind f strategy must cme frm the tp.
1. What des the underlined part “gain an edge” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Increase the speed. B. Get an advantage.
C. Reach the limit. D. Set a gal.
2. The underlined part “the laws f business physics” in Paragraph 3 means .
A. spending mre time and perfrming wrse
B. spending mre time and perfrming better
C. spending less time and perfrming wrse
D. spending less time and perfrming better
3. What can we learn frm the text?
A. Hw fast a firm mves depends n hw big it is.
B. Hw cmpetitive a firm is depends n what it prduces.
C. Firms guided by strategic speed take time t make necessary changes.
D. Firms guided by peratinal speed take time t develp necessary team spirit.
4. Which culd be the best title fr the text?
A. Imprve quality? Serve better.
B. Deliver value? Plugh ahead.
C. Reduce time? Mve faster.
D. Need speed? Slw dwn.
