F. Sctt Fitzgerald, brn n September 24, 1896, an American nvelist, was nce a student f St. Paul Academy, the Newman Schl and attended Princetn University fr a shrt while. In 1917 he jined the army and was psted in Alabama, where he met his future wife Zelda Sayre. Then he had t make sme mney t impress her.
His life with her was full f great happiness, as he wrte in his diary: “My wn happiness in the past ften apprached such jy that I culd nt share it even with the persn dearest t me but had t walk it away in quiet streets and take dwn parts f it in my diary. “
This Side f Paradise, his first nvel, was published in 1920. Encuraged by its success, Fitzgerald began t devte mre time t his writing. Then he cntinued with the nvel The Beautiful and Damned(1922), a cllectin f shrt stries Tales f the Jazz Age(1922), and a play The Vegetable(1923). But his greatest success was The Great Gatsby, published in 1925, which quickly brught him praise frm the literary wrld. Yet it failed t give him the needed financial security. Then, in 1926, he published anther cllectin f shrt stries All the Sad Yung Men.
Hwever, Fitzgerald’s prblems with his wife Zelda affected his writing. During the 1920s he tried t rerder his life, but failed. By 1930, his wife had her first breakdwn and went t a Swiss clinic. During this perid he cmpleted nvels Tender Is the Night in 1934 and The Lve f the Last Tycn in 1940. While his wife was in hspital in the United States, he gt ttally addicted t alchl.
