    [2024·湖北省高三上学期期中试题]Saring t 29,035 feet, the famus Munt Everest had lng been cnsidered unclimbable due t the freezing weather, the bvius ptential fall frm cliffs and the effects f the extreme high altitude, ften called “muntain sickness.” But that was t be changed by Edmund Hillary.
    When he was invited t jin the British Everest expeditin in 1953, Edmund Hillary was a highly capable climber. The glacier­cvered peaks in his hmetwn in New Zealand prved a perfect training grund fr the Himalaya. It was his furth Himalayan expeditin in just ver tw years and he was at the peak f fitness.
    On May 28,1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Nrgay, an experienced Sherpa (夏尔巴人) set ut and reached the Suth Summit by 9 a. m. next day. But after that, the ridge (山脊) slightly fell befre rising suddenly in a rcky spur (尖坡) abut 17 meters high just befre the true summit. The frmatin is difficult t climb due t its extreme pitch because a mistake wuld be deadly. Scratching at the snw with his ax, Hillary managed t vercme this enrmus bstacle, later t be knwn as the Hillary Step.
    At 11:30 a. m., the tw men fund themselves standing at the tp f the wrld. “Nt until we were abut 50 feet f the tp was I ever cmpletely cnvinced that we were actually ging t reach the summit.” Hillary later recunted, “Of curse I was very, very pleased t be n the summit, but my first thught was a little bit f surprise.     [2024·上海交通大学附中摸底考试]Manufacturers f prducts that claim t be envirnmentally friendly will face tighter rules n hw they are advertised t cnsumers under changes prpsed by the Federal Trade Cmmissin.
    The cmmissin's revised “Green Guides” warn marketers against using labels that make brad claims, like “ec­friendly”. Marketers must qualify their claims n the prduct packaging and limit them t a specific benefit, such as hw much f the prduct is recycled.
    “This is really abut trying t cut thrugh the cnfusin that cnsumers have when they are buying a prduct and that businesses have when they are selling a prduct,” said Jn Leibwitz, chairman f the cmmissin.
    The revisins cme at a time when green marketing is n the rise. Accrding t a new study, the number f advertisements with green messages in mainstream magazines has risen since 1987, and peaked in 2008 at 10.4%. In 2009, the number drpped t 9%.
    But while the number f advertisements may have dipped, there has been a rapid spread f ec­labeling. There are bth gd and bad players in the ec­labeling game.
    In the last five years r s, there has been an explsin f green claims and envirnmental claims. It is clear that cnsumers dn't always knw what they are getting.
    A handful f lawsuits have been filed in recent years against cmpanies accused f using misleading envirnmental labels. In 2008 and 2009, class­actin lawsuits (集体诉讼) were filed against SC Jhnsn fr using “Greenlist” labels n its cleaning prducts. The lawsuits said that the label was misleading because it gave the impressin that the prducts had been certified by a third party when the certificatin was the cmpany's wn.
    “We will prevail in these cases,” Christpher Beard, directr f public affairs fr SC Jhnsn, said, while acknwledging that “this has been an area that is difficult t navigate.”
    Cmpanies have als taken it upn themselves t cntest each ther's green claims.
    David Mallen, assciate directr f the Cuncil f Better Business Bureau, said in the last tw years the rganizatin had seen an increase in the number f claims cmpanies were bringing against each ther fr false r misleading envirnmental prduct claims.
    “Abut nce a week, I have a client that will bring up a new certificatin I've never even heard f and I'm in this industry,” said Kevin Wilhelm, chief executive fficer f Sustainable Business Cnsulting. “It's kind f a Wild West. Anybdy can claim themselves t be green.” Mr. Wilhelm said the excess f labels made it difficult fr businesses and cnsumers t knw which labels they shuld pay attentin t.
