Extremely authentic-lking prsthetic (假体的) eyes can nw be 3D-printed in a fractin f the time it wuld nrmally take t prduce the eyes by hand, scientists demnstrate in a new study.
The new technlgy can create a prsthetic eye in just 90 minutes, cmpared with the eight hurs it wuld nrmally take a skilled technician, r cularist, t prduce ne by hand. The 3D-printed eyes require five times less labr t make than traditinal methds, the scientists behind the technlgy wrte in a new paper published in the jurnal Nature Cmmunicatins.
The 3D-printed eyes als lk mre natural than traditinal prstheses; this culd help imprve a patient’s self-cnfidence in using the devices. “Patients are very cnscius abut wearing a prsthesis, and they dn't want thers t ntice,” Jhann Reinhard, lead study authr and a researcher at the Fraunhfer
Institute fr Cmputer Graphics Research in Germany, tld us. “With these mre realistic eves, it might help them t participate mre in sciety,” he said.
The new printing apprach invlves taking a specialized image f a patient’s empty eye scket and f their healthy eye. These images are then prcessed and used t draft blueprints that can be sent t be 3D-printed in the lab. These 3D-printed eyes clsely replicate the clr, size and structure f the patient's healthy eye and are particularly gd at capturing the clred part f the eye, knwn as the iris, and the white part f the eye, called the sclera. Once finished, the eyes take 15 t 30 minutes t be installed by an cularist, Reinhard said.
“Abut 80% f adults in need f prsthetic eyes culd theretically have ne made this way, either due t a birth defect that causes an eye t be small r missing r because they’ve lst an eye,” the team said. “Hwever, this wuldn’t be pssible fr all patients, such as thse wh have a very cmplex eye scket, as the sftware wuldn’t be able t find a matching shape fr the prsthetic eye,” Reinhard said.
“Mre data are needed t see if this technique culd als be used t make prsthetic eyes fr children, which wuld require mre regulatin,” Reinhard said.
8. Which f the fllwing wrds can be best used t describe the 3D-printed eyes?
A. Ec-friendly.B. Time-cnsuming.C. Fit-f-all.D. Realistic-lking.

C. It nrmally takes a skilled technician, r cularist, t prduce ne.
D. The installment f ne is 5 times faster than a traditinal prsthetic eye.
11. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the text?
A. 3D-printed Eyes——a Better Alternative

Recent experiments by psychlgists at the University f Pittsburgh shed new light n hw we learn and hw we remember ur real-wrld experiences. The research, described in the March 12, 2024 nline editin f prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Science, suggests that varying what we study and spacing ut ur learning ver time can bth be helpful fr memry.
“Lts f prir research has shwn that learning and memry benefit frm spacing study sessins ut,” said Benjamin, a directr f the Causal Learning and Decisin-Making Lab at Pitt. “Fr example, if yu cram the night befre a test, yu might remember the infrmatin the next day fr the test, but yu will prbably frget it fairly sn,” he added. “In cntrast, if yu study the material n different days leading up t the test, yu will be mre likely t recall it fr a lnger perid f time.”
But “spacing effect” has been based n the idea that what yu are trying t learn repeats identically each time. Yet that is rarely the case in real life, when sme features f ur experience s may stay the same, but thers are likely t change. Fr example, imagine repeat trips t yur lcal cffee shp. While many features may stay the same n each visit, a new barista (咖啡师) may be serving yu. Hw des the spacing effect wrk in light f such variatin acrss experiences?
In tw experiments, researchers asked participants t repeatedly study pairs f items and scenes that were either identical n each repetitin r in which the item stayed the same but the scene changed each time. Researchers fund that spaced learning benefited item memry. But they als fund that memry was better fr the items that had been paired with different scenes cmpared with thse shwn with the same scene each time.
“It is hard t prvide clear advice fr things like studying fr a test because the srt f material can be s different,” Benjamin said. “But in thery ur findings shuld be bradly relevant t different srts f tasks, like remembering smene’s name and things abut them and learning new vcabulary in a freign language.”
12. In what way is “spacing effect” challenged in reality?
A. The lack f sufficient learning time.
B. The misuse f the memry technique.
C. The repetitin f the learning prcess.
D. The variability f real-life experiences.
13. Which behavir is least likely t cntribute t lng-term memry?
A. Integrating spaced repetitin int learning.
B. Studying intensively the night befre a test.
C. Linking new infrmatin with different tasks.
D. Learning materials against varius backgrunds.
14. What will Benjamin suggest readers d t remember a new persn's name?
A. Use the name in cnversatins shrtly after meeting them.
B. Repeat the name by assciating it with different infrmatin.
C. Practice item memry t create a mental image with the persn.
D. Engage in active listening when they are intrducing themselves.
15. What is the text mainly abut?
A. The impact f cnstant spaced study.
B. The study f varius and self-paced learning.
C. The rle f varied learning and spaced study.
D. The significance f repeated learning sessins.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. C

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Fr example, if yu cram the night befre a test, yu might remember the infrmatin the next day fr the test, but yu will prbably frget it fairly sn”(例如,如果你在考试前一天晚上临时抱佛脚,你可能会在第二天记住考试的信息,但很快就会忘记)可知,.考试前一天晚上集中学习对长期记忆的贡献最小。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But in thery ur findings shuld be bradly relevant t different srts f tasks, like remembering smene’s name and things abut them and learning new vcabulary in a freign language”(但从理论上讲,我们的发现应该与不同类型的任务广泛相关,比如记住某人的名字和他们的事情,以及学习外语的新词汇)可知,本杰明建议读者通过将名称与不同信息关联来重复该名字。故选B项。
【15题详解】
