As we all knw, mst animals nly perfrm tricks when given treats. Hwever, Kim, the wrld's first spider t learn a skill, needs n stimulus (刺激) t d what she lves—jumping t different heights and distances—upn the instructin f a team f scientists frm the University f Manchester.
While the idea f training a spider might sund evil, the researchers' mtives were purely scientific. They are trying t unlck the secrets behind the jumping spiders' extrardinarily high leaps t catch prey (猎物) r t escape their enemies. A better understanding f the spiders' leaps wuld help experts develp mre efficient flying and jumping rbts.
The scientists fund that Kim culd gather enugh frce in her legs t jump mre than six times the length f her wn bdy frm a statinary psitin. What was even mre amazing was that she always landed perfectly. Fr shrter distances, Kim used a lt f energy, resulting in quick leaps, which the researchers believe prbably increases her chances f catching fastmving prey. The farther the distance was, the less extra energy was used, resulting in slwer but precise leaps.
Previus studies have indicated that spiders use bth their muscles and hydraulic (液压的) pressure—a mechanism by which bld is transferred t their extended legs—t make them push ff the grund. Hwever, in Kim's case, her leg muscles alne appeared t be generating enugh frce fr the liftff. The researchers nw intend t d further research t cmprehend fully nt just the spiders' jumping technique, but that f ther insects as well. “We are familiar with rbts that are aimed at taking ver human functins, but there are millins f insects in the wrld that perfrm specific functins that we have interest in and can be adapted fr rbtics,” says Nabawy, the leading engineer f the researching team.
