    I want t talk abut a sldier. I saw him yesterday as my husband and I were enjying a wnderful lunch in the cave­like dining rm f an ld htel.
    It is hard t imagine being cmfrtable in a rm that prbably seats a thusand peple, but the real magic f the place is its wnderful setting. Every crner is a wd and stne masterpiece, with high glass windws that lk ut t the huge cliffs f the valley.
    A man entered with his family and tk a seat. He wasn't in unifrm, but he walked with the dignity f a sldier, and a slight limp (跛行). My suspicin was cnfirmed when he remved his hat and placed it n the table where I culd see it. Embridered (刺绣) n the cap were the wrds: “Iw Jima Survivr”.
    As they were waiting fr lunch, the thers were talking happily, and this gentleman was staring ut f the windw. He was cntent t be left ut f the cnversatin and allwed t take in the wnderful and impressive view f the waterfall.
    I watched him, and imagined hw many hrrrs he had seen in the war. What lsses did he suffer, and hw many friends did he lse? What he had witnessed shuld have given him a gd reasn t lse faith in the wrld. Yet this tired sldier was smiling at the sky, at the sun and the rar f the waterfall. Smehw, after everything, the wrld was still beautiful t him.
    I walked ver t him and said, “Excuse me, sir. I'm srry t interrupt, but I saw yur hat, and I just wanted t say thank yu fr serving.”
    He lked up at me, surprised, and said prudly, “Yu're welcme, and thank yu, t.”
    I tld him I wuld g hme and tell my children abut this experience that I'd met him.

    I can prudly say that last year I brke the recrd fr the ldest persn in the wrld t ride a rller caster. I'm 105, but I feel yunger. Even the dctr agrees I'm in gd cnditin. I'm a bit deaf and my legs feel weak, but they are the nly issues.
    I rde the Twistsaurus at Flaming Land, which spins yu arund quite fast. I didn't chse t g n that. I'd have preferred a really fast ne that went upside dwn. But I was tld I culdn't ride smething like that, because my bld pressure culd drp and I might have sme danger.
    I wasn't nervus—I dn't get frightened f anything. I was securely fastened, s I knew I wuldn't fall ut. The rller caster ride went n fr three r fur minutes, and the experience culdn't be better. And I raised a lt f mney fr the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance fund, which was fantastic.
    Peple were saying I'd gt a place in the Guinness Wrld Recrds. Later, smene came t present me with the certificate. I had it n the wall in my living rm, with anther ne I gt a year earlier.
    My recrd­breaking way really began a cuple f years ag, with the Ice Bucket Challenge. It turned ut that I was prbably the ldest persn in the wrld t d it, and the vide was very ppular. After that, I started t think abut what else I culd d t raise mney fr different charities.
    I'm nt sure if anyne admires all the fun I'm having. They just say I'm daft and that's abut it. But I've had many gd days and many exciting times. I've had a really gd life. I dn't think I've wasted any f it.
