When I was a 19-year-ld cllege student, a call frm the hspital abut my father’s bld transfusin and thrat surgery came the night befre an exam. My father had been in a deep uncnscius state fr a week, and I was the clsest sn t him, respnsible fr his medical decisins. The bld transfusin was an easy decisin. It was a relatively safe prcedure. The thrat surgery was anther thing. I didn’t knw hw my father wuld feel if he recvered cnsciusness and had a hle in his thrat fr the rest f his life. Ultimately, I declined. This experience made me even less willing t be vulnerable (脆弱的) and hnest abut my struggles f making big decisins.
Years later, I became a prfessr. I learned t value my students’ grwth and thers’ perceptins. My students needed cmpassin and supprt. S, I shared smething abut my father’s illness and death t acknwledge that life went n utside f my classrm and grades were nt the mst imprtant thing in the wrld. I tld my students my past lessns. I knew they might be suffering in adversity, and I wanted them t knw that if they needed help, I wuld understand. The respnse was immediate and pwerful. My cnnectins with students deepened and I culd instruct them n a new level. I changed nthing abut the way I delivered curse material, but student exam scres imprved, as did my teaching evaluatins.
A fellw prfessr asked me, “If this wrks s well, why didn’t yu d it sner?” I said, “Vulnerability is really hard. It invlves sharing f yurself as fully as yu are able t, including admitting wrngding and acknwledging that yu can’t always be yur best self. Far frm being a sign f weakness, it requires a tn f strength.”
Expsing yur imperfectins, cnnecting with students n a deeper level and creating space fr them t grw will always be challenging, but it is wrth it. I cannt knw everything that is ging n in every student’s life, but I can always chse cmpassin.

In spite f the title, Hw t Grw Old, this article will really be n hw nt t grw ld, which, at my time f life, is a much mre imprtant subject. My first advice wuld be t chse yur ancestrs carefully. Althugh bth my parents died yung, I have dne well in this respect as regards my ther ancestrs. My maternal (母亲方面的) grandfather, it is true, died in the flwer f his yuth at the age f sixty-seven, but my ther three grandparents all lived t be ver eighty. Of remte ancestrs I can nly discver ne wh did nt live t a great age, and he died f a disease which is nw rare, namely, having his head cut ff.
My maternal grandmther, after having nine children wh survived, as sn as she became a widw, devted herself t wmen’s higher educatin. She was the c-funders f Girtn Cllege. She used t relate hw she met in Italy an elderly gentleman wh was lking very sad. She inquired the cause f his srrw and he said that he had just parted frm his tw grandchildren. “Gd gracius,” she exclaimed, “I have seventy-tw grandchildren, and if I were sad each time I parted frm ne f them, I shuld have a miserable existence!” “Madre snaturale (奇怪的母亲),” he replied.
But as ne f the seventy-tw, I prefer her recipe. After the age f eighty she fund she had sme difficulty in getting t sleep, s she habitually spent the hurs frm midnight t 3 a.m. in reading ppular science. I d nt believe that she ever had time t ntice that she was grwing ld. This, I think, is the prper recipe fr remaining yung. If yu have wide and keen interests and activities in which yu can still be effective, yu will have n reasn t think abut the merely statistical (统计学的) fact f the number f years yu have already lived, still less f the prbable shrtness f yur future.
    8. What d we knw abut authr’s maternal grandmther?
    A. She was a strange and cruel mther.
    B. She set up Girtn Cllege with thers.
    C. Her husband died when he was yung.
    D. She had 72 children and grandchildren.
    9. Why did the grandmther asked the gentleman?
    A. Because she wanted t teach him a lessn.
    B. Because she preferred cking and talking.
    C. Because she wanted shw ff her freedm.
    D. Because she wndered why he was s sad.
    10. What is the prper way t remain yung accrding t the authr?
    A. T maintain wide interests and active participatin.
    B. T remember hw many years yu have lived s far.
    C. T stay up reading frm midnight t 3 a. m. every day.
    D. T raise as many children as yu can and cherish them.
    11. What is the writing style f the passage?
    A. Rmantic.B. Imaginative.C. Humrus.D. Irnic.
    D
A recent study fund that there is cnvincing evidence that time in nature reduces depressive symptms, decreases stress and imprves cgnitive functin. Mre time in the green is assciated with lwer bld pressure, strengthened immune systems, alleviated risk f heart discase and imprved sleep.
In a 2024 study, Maddck and his clleagues lked at utpatient mental health service usage, mstly fr depressin, anxiety r stress, acrss 1,169 zip cdes in Texas. This difference culd be partly explained by fewer depressive symptms.
There are several pssible explanatins fr these findings. One thery hlds that nature prvides a shrt break frm the mental fatigue f mdern life and the built envirnment, thereby restring attentinal resurces. A 2024 experiment that had nearly 100 participants ffers supprt fr the idea: the researchers fund that a 40-minute walk in nature enhanced peple's ability t adjust higher-level cgnitive functins — such as prblem-slving and multitasking — mre than a40-minute walk in an urban envirnment did.
A secnd thery suggests that time spent in nature activates the parasympathetic(副交感的)nervus system, which reduces the bdy's stress respnses. Studies shw reductins in crtisl(皮质醇) levels — part f thse respnses — after expsure t greenery. In additin, green space affects health indirectly because time utdrs encurages physical activity and ffers chances fr scial cnnectin, bth f which imprve mental and physical well-being.
Studies such as Jimenez's and Maddck's are aimed at plicymakers mre than individuals, but they remind us all f the imprtance f seeking ut greenery wherever we live. And we shuld all try t heed the advice that Jimenez gives t her students: “I see hw stressed they are, especially during exams,” she says. “I tell them, ‘G ut fr a walk.’”
    12. What des the underlined wrd “alleviated” in paragraph 1 mean?
    A. Increased.B. Eased.C. Remved.D. Avided.
    13. Hw did Maddck and his clleagues get their findings?
    A. By ding an experiment.B. By referring t previus data.
    C. By analyzing a field case.D. By adapting bservatinal methd.
    14. What des the 2024 experiment with100 participants clarify?
    A. An escape t nature can be refreshing.
    B. Nature ffers inspiratin fr mdern life.
    C. A walk in nature benefits the envirnment.
    D. City walk is equally imprtant t nature walk.
    15. Why des Jimenez ask her students t g ut fr a walk?
    A. T take exercise.B. T reduce pressure.
    C. T becme prepared.D. T seek advice.
