Nrmally, the hippcampus (海马体) feels the effects f Alzheimer’s mst. University Cllege Lndn and Alzheimer’s Research UK are studying these taxi drivers’ brains, as it has been fund that the hippcampus cntrlling the brain’s shrt-term memry and spatial (空间的) memry systems is enlarged in their brains. Mrever, the taxi drivers’ hippcampi cntinue t enlarge as they g n ding the jb fr mre years, suggesting that perhaps there’s smething we can d t reprduce the effect in the general ppulatin.
Lead researcher Hug Spiers was part f the team which 20 years ag fund that, like birds and squirrels, the taxi drivers’ hippcampi gradually gt bigger. Indeed, research has fund fr years that any animal that requires a detailed spatial knwledge f their territry experiences grwth in the hippcampus.
Spiers’ team hpes t deal with Alzheimer’s by studying the taxi drivers’ brains. T cllect mre infrmatin n the mechanisms (机制) that cause the “brain gain”, Spiers has asked thirty f Lndn’s taxi drivers cnnected t an MRI machine t drive arund n their rutes. Fr mst rdinary purpses, machine translatin (MT) has gt a lt better in the past years. The biggest surce f imprvement has been the adptin f “deep learning” in training translating systems. But imprvement has als cme abut thrugh the expansin f clever cmpanies slving individual tasks. Sme have created specialist dictinaries s that imprtant terms can be translated accurately and cnsistently. Other inventins cmbine MT with a human translatr’s editing tls, which means translatrs spend mst f their time checking and perfecting MT utput, rather than ding the wrk f the translating themselves.
Fr sme translatrs, being a machine’s editr may sund depressing. This can be seen the ther way arund, hwever. A human repeatedly translating identical frmulae can get bred. Allwing the machine t d these bring jbs frees the translatr t apply specialized knwledge, slving mre intellectually satisfying prblems.
What are thse prblems? One Madrid-based translatr fr a big law firm describes a recent task. It invlved making a critical distinctin in a legal dcument: a Spanish wrd (dl) that’s prperly translated as “wilful miscnduct” was translated nly as “miscnduct” by sftware. Since the law requires cnsiderably severer punishment when the miscnduct is “wilful”, the missin (省略) was ptentially disastrus.
Tday, many translatin firms are prud f using MT, nt as a crutch (依赖) but as a means t cut csts and turnarund times. Part f their jb becmes knwing what can be autmated and what cannt. Instructin manuals can be left t MT while thers like a nvel legal argument cannt.
The bad news fr sme translatrs is that a tap f repeatable, easy wrk is being turned ff. The gd news is that what remains will be brain-challenging stuff fr peple wh knw a language and smething else. Tales f artificial intelligence usually test humans against machines. But the translatrs f the future will be neither entirely human nr machine. They will be human beings with mechanical enhancements.
12. What can we learn abut machine translatin frm paragraph 1?
A. It has been mstly used by specialists.
B. Lts f effrts have been made t imprve it.
C. Sme clever cmpanies have made a frtune frm it.
D. It has replaced human translatrs in sme simple tasks.
13. What can be inferred frm the case mentined by the Madrid-based translatr?
A. Experienced translatrs are hard t find.
B. Machine translatin can be inaccurate.
C. Machine translatin has led t many misjudgments.
D. It is difficult fr translatrs t tell“wilful miscnduct”frm“miscnduct”.
14. What is many translatin firms’ attitude twards using machine translatin tday?
A. Psitive.B. Critical.C. Uninterested.D. Dubtful.
15. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A. Technlgy cntributes t prductive translatrs
B. Translatin is faced with a great technical challenge
C. The translatr f the future is a human-machine hybrid
D. Career pprtunities in the field f translatin are increasing

T sme peple, the sizzle and clatter f restaurant kitchens might be like an rchestra; t me, such sunds behind the swinging drs just meant chas. Hwever unpleasant I felt the places were, I decided t apply fr a part-time jb at a ppular restaurant. The reasn was simple: I needed mney. I wanted t jin a camping trip t the Blue Muntains with my friends, but that wuld cst abut 150 dllars. “Yu have t pay fr entertainment by yurself,” my parents said.
S I applied, and Mr. Smith, the bss f the restaurant, allwed me t have a try. My jb was super easy and bring: the newly prepared dishes wuld be put at the cunter between the kitchen and dining rm, and it was my duty t deliver them t the right custmers.
The first few days were tiring but OK. Hwever, setbacks sn fllwed as I struggled t keep pace during a particularly busy lunch rush. I awkwardly spilled a tray f drinks, making lud nises and the flr messy. I was embarrassed and began t feel nervus. One evening, I mixed up rders fr a large party, causing chas and frustratin.
I felt desperate. I screwed everything up. Then I heard Mr. Smith call me, and I went int his ffice with my head lw. T my surprise, he didn’t blame me. Instead, he made me a cup f cffee. “Relax, yung man,” he said. “Try t smile. Things always g wrng if yu can’t really enjy what yu’re ding. Feel the fun in the jb, and yu’ll be OK!”
I thught he was right. The next day when I was wrking, I glimpsed int the kitchen and was amazed: in the narrw and crwded space everyne was busy — the chefs swirling (翻动) pans, the manager yelling custmers’ requirements, thers cming and ging with dishes t deliver — but everything went smthly withut any lumping r bumping.
