    It is difficult t determine if cgnitive changes assciated with learning hw t play an instrument remain thrughut a persn’s lifetime. On a single day in 1947, the Scttish mvement tested the intelligence f almst every 11-year-ld child wh attended schl in the cuntry. Researchers at Edinburgh University’s Reid Schl f Music realized it was nt t late t ask the riginal participants abut their musical experiences.
    The researchers develped a questinnaire that cllected infrmatin abut lifetime musical experience. This was cmpleted by the surviving members wh returned t the study fr further testing in 2018. The participants were asked hw many instruments they played and what their training was like. They were als asked t recrd hw many years f regular practice they had and what perfrmance level they had reached. A ttal f 366 members prvided usable infrmatin and 117 revealed that they had sme degree f experience with musical instruments.
    Overall, the researchers fund that a significant psitive relatinship existed between playing an instrument and change in cgnitive ability ver time. Mre specifically, the mre years and mre hurs f practice with an instrument that a persn had, the mre likely they were t shw a psitive cgnitive change ver the curse f their life. Precisely why learning t play a musical instrument has these effects remains unclear.
