Life is like a rller caster; every pint has ups and dwns. The truly victrius peple stay cmmitted t their brad gals even in unplanned circumstances. Research int language learning and mtivatin has changed directin ver the past tw decades, shifting frm what are nw cnsidered verly-simplistic mdels f mtivatin, such as “integrativeness” (where students are mtivated t learn an L2 because they wish t jin a cmmunity that speaks this language) and “instrumentalism” (where mtivatin cmes frm a desire fr financial r sme ther srt f return). Mtivatin t learn has nw been linked t a secnd-language identity, which is nt cnceptualised as static, but dynamic, shifting and pen t change. Sme research studies have fcused n investment in ESOL (English fr Speakers f Other Languages) settings in English-speaking cuntries: hw students invest in the target language in rder t get certain returns, nt nly financial but als related t status, an idea which Bnny Nrtn Peirce ntes as having been brrwed frm the scilgist Pierre Burdieu. There is als grwing research in the area f “future selves” and language learning, such as that by Zltán Dörnyei and Ema Ushida and by Jill Hadfield.
Studies int secnd language identity have revealed the investment cmmitted t building up an identity in English in the lives f ecnmic migrants (移民) and thse chsing t settle lng-term in English-speaking cuntries. David Blck cnducted research int ecnmic migrants living in Lndn, revealing hw they invest thrugh study pprtunities, seeking ut lcals t speak t, r using English in wrk. Each f his case studies reveals different features and patterns in these subjects’ lives.
Yet it is als true that secnd-language identity frmatin is alive in EFL (English as a Freign Language) cntexts, if I may draw a distinctin frm the ESOL further-educatin cntext (in the UK and the US). In an age f glbalisatin and internatinalisatin, the rle f English has cme int much sharper fcus, and such a changed glbal reality pses new questins abut mtivatin t learn. Dörnyei argues that we are nw dealing with “glbal English”, and that its acquisitin is related t building up “a glbal identity”. I put the case that internatinal English language examinatins, such as thse ffered by Cambridge English, are a pwerful symbl f cultural capital, ffering returns full f imagery and entry t imagined cmmunities. Imagined cmmunities, it has been argued, are imagined persnal netwrks f the future, whether scial, prfessinal r even internatinal. Investment and the mtivatin t learn can spring frm the desire t belng t these imagined cmmunities. Hw this imagery and investment relates t their wn students shuld be smething that teachers becme familiar with.

As a btanists wh studies ur cultural relatinship with plants, I am frever fascinated with what draws peple t gardening.
Admittedly, cnnecting with the natural wrld might seem like an bvius mtivatin, and undubtedly it is a key part f the attractin.___67___ If they were, we’d abandn any attempts at design, planting r care and watch hw walls f weeds slwly gave way t the mass f bushes. But that wuldn’t be gardening, f curse, because fr all their diversity, the ne thing that all gardens have in cmmn is hw unnatural they are.___68___ Dazzling plants, watch features and glrius blms is all intercnnected well beynd what wuld naturally ccur. Whether it is green lawns created in the driest deserts r a trpical paradise n a strmy Nrth Atlantic island, they are all abut shaping the natural wrld t fit ur idea f what it “ shuld” be.
As I wrk n my tiny terrariums (玻璃花园) n dark February nights, smething magical happens t my brain. ___69___ In a wrld that has becme increasingly uncertain, peple are ften fuelled by the same psychlgical desire: the instinctive need t have a bit f cntrl amid chas.
As ur wrld becmes mre and mre unpredictable and ften frightening, gardening seems t be able t appeal t and reach ut t a whle new generatin, ften against all dds.
Of curse, gardening in’ t the nly thing peple turn t. The rise f culture cnflicts and fix at in n bdy image have als been widely dcumented as being driven by a psychlgical need t feel a degree f certainty, cntrl and safety. Hwever, I can’t help but think f these alternatives: ___70___
A. In reality gardens are anything but natural.
B. What are the things they have been attracted t?
C. They are idealized landscape with all the mud, pests and dead plants edited ut.
D. Hw much better a place the planet wuld be if gardening was ur utlet fr this need!
E. Much like agriculture, gardening is a universal human desire cded int ur cultural DNA.

Is Binge-watching the New Addictin?
Have yu ever lved a TV shw? I mean really lved it? Like, yu can’t wait t get t wrk t talk abut it? What abut the cliffhanger? That’s the unslved situatin at the end f the episde which makes yu want t watch the next ne. But, when will the next ne be?
Binge-watching is when a persn watches mre than ne episde f a shw quickly. With develpments in the speed and cnnectivity f the internet, increases in technlgy and the rise f n-demand entertainment cmpanies, peple can nw have their favurite shws streamed directly t their televisin at their cnvenience.
Hwever, this amazing gift may in fact be harmful. Recent research frm British media watchdg Ofcm (英国通信管理局) finds that ut f the mre than half f British adults wh watch mre than ne episde f a shw back-t-back, almst a third have admitted missing sleep r becming tired as a result; and ne quarter have neglected their husewrk. Next we’ll be missing wrk!
Bingeing has ther cnnectins — binge eating, binge drinking and binge smking, all f which are ften assciated with cmpulsive behaviur, a lack f cntrl and a pssible rute t addictin. If peple find binge-watching hard t resist, cupled with the fact that it has shwn t lead t failure f attentin in many, are we witnessing the birth f a new type f addictin?
The numerus infrmatin and entertainment that televisin and nline media can bring us is, many wuld say, a gd thing. Hwever, like any behaviur dne t extremes, it can becme dangerus. And when the activity begins t enter ther areas, causing us t stp functining — then it becmes a prblem. S, what’s the answer? Mderatin! Neither a tiny amunt, nr t much. After all, as the ld prverb says, a little f what yu fancy des yu gd.

A ntable highlight f the shw was the real cnfidence f the singing. Sam Hall was a jy t watch, with perfect cmic timing, as was Emma Williams, thrughly believable and cnvincing in her rle. These tw yung talents stle the shw, in my pinin. The nly disadvantage is appintments were the dancing, which shwed a lack f riginality, and the pening scene, which fell a little flat. Despite the ccasinal technical flaws, this was a highly enjyable and greatly impressive prductin, which the cmpany shuld be prud f.
I was really lking frward t Jnathan Baker’s latest, which is set in an imagined, but realistic, Lndn f the scar future. But I fund this new effrt was act dwn by the slightly ne-dimensinal characterizatin, and the writing is belw standard fr the mst part : sme f the early scents between Martha and her husband are slightly bring. The superb characterizatin and ambitin that baker demnstrated in his previus nvels seem t be missing here. Baker’ cmmitment t describing the lives f rdinary peple is admirable, but the whle thing is lacking in energy.
This is episde number three in the nearly twenty-year-ld series, delivering a very attractive and interesting stry and lads f cmedy. There is sme strng writing and vice acting, but the new episde chses t g fr a linear (线性的) narrative, with sme puzzle included alng the way, which is less invlving than the theme f explratin and cnversatin which previus episde have depended n. Besides, the puzzle are nt particularly engaging, and many f them have been seen befre in ther adventure games. The visuals are extremely impressive, f curse, as we have cme t expect, this time featuring venues in Catalnia. But verall, a slight disappintment.
