Students at Eindhven University f Technlgy didn’t just want t build a car that wuldn’t pllute the air; they wanted t create ne that culd actually clean it up.
The cllege team has just exhibited a battery-pwered car that absrbs CO2. Their car, called the Zem, is equipped with a special filter (过滤器) that cleans up the CO2 prduced by ther cars n the rad.
The Zem was brn ut f a challenge t build a cmpletely carbn-neutral vehicle. Its bdy panels (金属板) were 3D printed t reduce waste and minimize the prductin f CO2. Recycled plastics were als used thrughut the utside and inside. The car’s pwertrain, which cnsists f small battery packs and a 22-kWh mtr, als makes use f regenerative braking t increase efficiency.
The real difference maker, thugh, is the vehicle’s special CO2 filter. The Zem purifies (净化) the air thrugh the special filter while driving, capturing the CO2 and string it. It is able t absrb tw kg f CO2 fr 20,000 miles a year, meaning ten cars culd stre as much carbn dixide as an average tree — a significant amunt when cnsidering the wrld’s billin cars are currently ne f its leading surces f emissins.
Even if the technlgy isn’t adpted, the team hpe that their car can inspire autmakers t start making cleaner vehicles. “We want t encurage the industry by shwing what is already pssible,” the leader f the team said. “If 35 students can design, develp and build an almst carbn-neutral car in a year, then there are als pprtunities and pssibilities fr the industry.”
The Zem is the secnd zer-emissin vehicle we’ve seen cme ut f the Eindhven University f Technlgy. Last year, anther team f students created the Stella Vita, a slar-pwered vehicle that culd travel up t 450 miles a day. We can’t wait t see what the schl’s students cme up with next.

The team studied arabidpsis’ gene (基因) expressin and fund that the ethanl-treated plants started behaving if they were experiencing drught, even befre they were actually deprived f water. This gene expressin gave the plants an advantage in preparing fr a drught.
The researchers said, “The finding is nt just useful fr the wrld’s gardens, but als fr farms grwing vital crps like rice and wheat. Drught-resistant crps culd help achieve sustainable fd security, which is an issue affecting many parts f the wrld right nw.” They added that ethanl was a useful and simple way t increase fd prductin all ver the wrld in times f drught. “The applicatin f ethanl t plants wuld be a ptent agricultural methd t enhance drught resistance in varius plants,” said Mtaki Seki, the study’s lead authr.
