The summer befre my 10th birthday my father mved ur family f nine kids t a farm. He’d wrked multiple jbs and saved fr many years and culd finally affrd a place in the cuntryside. Nw a minr cncern: the huse had n running water r electricity. But there were 150 acres t run arund in!
That first year my dad put in electricity, because my mm simply annunced,“I wn’t have il lamps with children running arund!” Indr plumbing (管道系统) had t wait anther year. Different friends, wh my dad knew frm wrk, asked if he’d take their large dgs wh culdn’t run free in the city. S we all nw played with a big range-brwn bxer and a sprty German Shrthaired Pinter, wh we named Billy and Mlly.
Minimalism was ur gal, and als ur nly chice. Abslutely ur clthes were hand-me-dwns. Bananas and ranges were rare “imprted” fruit we’d seen at hlidays. We felt we were yunger than peers there was ONE birthday party a year! We’d take turns nce every 9 years a child wuld have his/her wn party!
While mney was s scarce, we had jy t hand all the time. My mther was always singing, yelling, r hugging. And she tld us we wned plenty! T this day, each f us remembers thse years as an abundance f things, laughter, arguing, making peace, and playing tgether! On paper, hydrgen lks like a dream fuel. In practice, things are trickier. String meaningful quantities f hydrgen gas requires cmpressing (压缩) it several hundred times. Transfrming it int liquid state is anther ptin, but ne that requires cling the stuff t -253℃.Either prcess requires rugged tanks. Over time, hydrgen gas can pass slwly int metals, weakening them and ptentially causing cracks. Tanks must be built frm special materials designed t resist this breakdwn.
Researchers at the Fraunhfer Institute led by Marcus Vgt, think that supplying hydrgen as gp (糊状) ffers a way arund sme f its limitatins. They have been experimenting with a chemical cmpund that can be pumped int a cntainer and then persuaded t give ff its hydrgen n demand.
Their inventin, which they nickname “pwerpaste”, lks like tthpaste. Its main ingredient is magnesium hydride, a cmpund that when intrduced t water, reacts with it t frm hydrgen and magnesium hydrxide. The escaped hydrgen can then be redirected int a fuel cell, where it reacts with xygen frm the air t generate electric pwer. The magnesium hydrxide waste is emptied frm the reactr autmatically.
Dr Vgt’s scheme ffers several advantages ver batteries, petrl and mre cnventinal ways f handling hydrgen. One is the strage f energy that either batteries r petrl can manage. A secnd is ease f refilling, which is simply a matter f swapping an empty cntainer f paste fr a full ne, and tpping up the water, which is stred in a separate tank. A third advantage is that, unlike a battery, the paste des nt gradually lse its stred energy if it is left n the shelf. Mrever, the paste itself is harmless, as are the reactin’s by-prducts.
But there are still mre t wrk thrugh. Magnesium hydride reacts nly slwly with water. T vercme this, Dr Vgt and his team have fund a chemical additive that greatly accelerates the reactin. They have als fund a way t ensure that the reactin can be cntrlled precisely enugh t supply nly as much hydrgen as is needed at any given mment.
28.Which f the fllwing best explains “rugged” underlined in Paragraph 1?
A. Creative. B. Fragile. C. Tugh. D. Enrmus.
29.What can we knw abut the inventin accrding t Paragraph 3?
A. The remaining waste needs remving with extra help.
B. Several chemical reactins ccur in the same tank.
C. Water and electricity are necessary in the prcess.
D. Magnesium hydride mixed with water releases hydrgen.
30.Hw is Paragraph 4 mainly develped?
A. By prviding examples. B. By drawing cmparisns. C. By quting sayings. D. By explaining a cncept.
31.What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Dream Fuel: Hydrgen Gas B. New Clean Energy

In a wrld f music streaming services, access t almst any sng is just a few clicks away. Yet, the live perfrmance lives n. Peple still fill sweaty basements, muddy fields and gilded cncert halls t hear their favurite musicians play. And nw neurscientists might knw why—live music engages the brain’s emtin centres mre than its recrded cunterpart.
Cncerts are immersive (沉浸式的) scial experiences in which peple listen t and feel the music tgether thrugh crescends(音乐渐强), key changes and rhythmic drps. Mrever, they are dynamic — artists can adapt their playing accrding t the crwd’s reactin.
It was this last difference that led neurscientists, based at the Universities f Zurich and Osl, t study the brain respnses f peple listening t music. In the “live” experiment, participants lay in an MRI scanner listening t the music thrugh earphnes, while a pianist was psitined utside the rm. The pianist was shwn the participant’s real-time brain activity as a frm f feedback. In the recrded cnditin, participants listened t pre-recrded versins f the same tunes.
The scientists were interested in hw live music affected the areas f the brain respnsible fr prcessing emtins, particularly the amygdala, an area deep inside the brain. The results, just published in the jurnal PNAS, revealed that live music had a significantly greater emtinal impact. Whether the music cnveyed happiness r sadness, dynamic live perfrmances led t increased activity nt nly in the amygdala but als ther parts f the brain’s emtin prcessing netwrk. The researchers als fund that participants’ brain activity tracked the acustic (声学的) features f the music, like temp(节奏) and pitch(音准), far mre clsely when it was played live.
While the study didn’t fully recreate the live cncert experience, the findings suggest that artists’ ability t adjust their perfrmance in real time cntributes t the emtinal resnance (共鸣) f live music. Sme musical acts nw attempt t recreate live cncerts, such as ABBA Vyage, an immersive pre-recrded VR cncert, but withut artists’ capacity t read audience’s md and respnd accrdingly, it will never quite match the real thing.
32. Why d peple attend live shws despite music streaming services?
A. Because they prefer being with friends at a cncert.
B. Because they enjy the prcess f finding ppular music.
C. Because they intend t meet their favrite musicians in persn.
D. Because they value the emtinal cnnectin live music brings.
33. The rle f the pianist play in the “live” experiment is t _______.
A. bserve the participants’ brain activity as feedback
B. cmpare the effectiveness f live perfrmances and recrded nes
C. prvide live accmpaniment t participants inside the MRI scanner
D. demnstrate their ability t read and respnd t the audience’s md
34. What did the study published in PNAS find abut the impact f live music n the brain?
A. Live music affected nly the amygdala f the brain.
B. The brain respnded mre intensely t acustic features f live music.
C. Live music had a reduced emtinal impact cmpared t recrded music.
D. The participants’ brain activity was especially sensitive t dynamic music.
35. What des the authr suggest by mentining ABBA Vyage in the last paragraph?
A. It fails t create a perfect perfrming atmsphere.
B. It matches the sund quality f live perfrmances.
C. It greatly stirs up the audience’s emtinal respnse.
D. It lacks artists’ respnse based n audience’s feedback.
