Alan Mathisn Turing was brn in England in 1912. Like many talents wh g n t great things, Turing shwed his unbelievable intelligence frm a very yung age. Actually, by the time he was halfway thrugh primary schl, Turing’s teachers had already realized he was a mathematical genius. He culd d cmplex calculating in his head even thugh he had never been taught abut it.
Frtunately, Turing was the ppsite f Hawking, and he abslutely lved schl. Prf f this is the extreme lengths he wuld g just t get t class. Fr example, n ne ccasin when there was a train strike, Turing even cycled 60 miles t attend. Nw that’s devtin!
Hwever, in spite f Turin’s schlarly attitude and his bvius genius, his teachers had their cncerns abut his future. This was because well- knwn schls in Britain like the nes Turing attended regarded the Classics, such as Latin and Greek as the mst imprtant, nt subjects like maths and science. Turing’s prud teachers even wrte letters t his parents asking them t persuade the yung man t fcus mre n the Classics. Imagine hw different the wrld might be if the yung Turing had listened t his teachers! Thankfully, his lve fr all things scientific and mathematical meant there was n chance f that.
After finishing secndary schl, Turing cmpleted a degree in mathematics at King’s Cllege Cambridge, and then btained his PhD frm Princetn University in the USA. It was during these university years that he invented the Turing Machine, which is cnsidered by many peple t be the earliest versin f a cmputer prcessing unit. It sunds unbelievable that anybdy culd have invented smething which was similar t a cmputer in 1936.But that just shws hw far ahead f his time Alan Turing was, even when he was still a yung man.

Parents f teenagers ften view their children’s friends with distrust, wrrying that their children will be pushed by their peers(同龄人) int ding smething flish r even dangerus. Their wrries hld water. In a previus study, psychlgist Laurence Steinberg fund that a teenage driver with a same- age passenger in the car is at higher risk f traffic accidents than ne driving alne r with an adult.
In the fllwing years. Steinberg examined why teens were mre likely t take risks in the cmpany f ther teenagers. In a later study, by scanning(扫描) the brains f 40 teens and adults, Steinberg fund the brains f teenagers, but nt adults, shwed greater activity in tw regins assciated with rewards when they were being bserved by same- age peers. The reward systems f the brain are activated whenever peple experience smething rewarding, like eating a nice- tasting fd, which make them feel satisfied. In this case, rewards are greater fr teens, which mtivates them t seek higher- risk experiences.
But Steinberg thught peer pressure might als have its psitive side. In the latest study, Steinberg’s team used a card game t research hw peers affect the way yung peple gather and apply infrmatin. It invlved 101 teenage bys wh played either alne r with three peers. They chse cards frm fur decks(牌堆): tw decks had “gd” cards, and tw “bad” nes. Players with peers were mre willing t take risks, trying t figure ut which decks culd help them t win. The results shwed that teens playing with their peers engage in mre explratry behavir, learn faster and achieve better perfrmance n the task than thse playing alne.
Nw sme experts are prpsing that we shuld take advantage f the teens’ keen sensitivity(敏感) t the presence f friends t imprve educatin. “Risk taking in an educatinal cntext is a vital skill that enables prgress and creativity,” wrte Sarah- Jayne Blakemre, a prfessr at University Cllege Lndn.

Hney bees are imprtant t ur survival as humans. The majrity f fruit and vegetables we eat wuld n lnger exist withut them. The hney bee ppulatin is threatened by a large number f dangers, mst f which can be prevented with the help f humans. Being an fficer in Envirnmental Club here at Freedm, I believe this is a very imprtant tpic that we want t educate students abut.
Bees are threatened by large- scale mnculture (单一耕作) agriculture and pesticides that are used n these crps. Fr the mst part, large cmpanies which grw the same kind f crps in large fields are t blame fr the widespread use f pesticides and the planting f mnculture crps.
It is believed that the use f pesticides makes bee families mre easily be affected by infectin and sickness, which is hurting their numbers. The belief is that in this weakened state bees becme easily affected by mites and fungi (small living things that cause infectius diseases). Then Clny Cllapse Disrder (CCD) appears. It ccurs when the majrity f wrker bees in a hney bee family disappear. This is a terrible result fr the bee family.
Anther ptential cause f CCD is malnutritin (营养不良). Mnculture fields cntribute t the malnutritin f bees because a single crp des nt prvide enugh nutrients fr a family f bees. Hney bees require a variety f plants t chse frm in rder t stay healthy and prductive.
Numerus factrs are cntributing t the wrldwide lss f hney bees. Envirnmental Club is trying t bring light t this difficult situatin that we are facing and we’ re trying t educate students n the tpic. The declining bee ppulatin is a very pressing issue fr all f us, but I find myself realizing that cmes alng with serius prblems. Hwever, many f my generatin haven’t been aware f that. We have t wrk n finding slutins t this and supprt fr mre reasnable cnsumptin and prductin f prducts that affect bees.
32.What’s the current situatin f hney bees?
A.Their varieties have decreased a lt.B.They are ignred by students
C.They are lsing their habitats.D.Their lives are put at risk.
33.What wuld happen t hney bees after they get pesticides?
A.They wuld be infected with diseases easily.B.They wuld suffer CCD quickly.
C.They wuld attract mites easily.D.They wuld die in a mment.
34.Why are mnculture field s harmful t hneybees?
A.They are unable t prvide enugh crps.
B.They fail t ffer them balanced nutritin.
C.They fail t give them a gd natural envirnment.
D.They are unable t feed bees with their favrite crps.
35.What is the best title fr the text?
A.Save the bees.B.Say n t pesticides.
C.Supprt bee prducts.D.Avid mnculture agriculture.

The days when art was an Olympic sprt
Did yu knw that creating wrks f art used t be an Olympic cmpetitin? 36 In the first year, Walter Winans became the first and the nly Olympian t win medals fr bth art and sprts. Despite this seemingly ptimistic start, the idea f the arts being included in the Olympic Games sn met with disinterest, finally resulting in the remval f the art cmpetitin frm the Olympic Games.
37
The idea t include art in the Olympics came frm Barn Pierre de Cubertin, wh was the funder f the Internatinal Olympic Cmmittee, which created the mdern Olympics. Cubertin believed that the arts and sprts were linked and was impressed by anyne wh had a firm cmmand f bth a sprt and an artistic discipline(项目).
Why aren’t the arts included in the Olympics tday?
Fr starters, nly amateurs were allwed t cmpete in the arts part f the Olympics. 38 Having artists f average quality cmpeting while nly the mst cmpetent athletes were allwed t cmpete created a dramatic divide and gave the impressin that the arts were nt as imprtant as sprts.
Secndly, wrks f art created had t have sprts as the subject matter. 39 Limiting the subjects als cntributed t making the arts part f the Olympic Games bring t the general public.
Finally, ne f the biggest reasns was that the arts are subjective. Sprts can be judged by time and distance, making it easy t determine wh is the winner. 40 This difficulty in judging a definite winner resulted in the arts part becming a nn- cmpetitive exhibitin that ran fr the duratin f the Olympic Games.
A.Why was art made an Olympic discipline?
B.What is a discipline in the Olympic Games?
C.This rule made the bjects prduced seem really bring.
